GLM> They don't have the money currently

http://www.thestar.com/article/588542

Their salary cap per team is $17.4 million

http://www.ontheforecheck.com/2009/4/8/826921/khl-set-to-slash-contracts

They convinced their players union to cut their salaries.

Their entire challenge to the NHL was predicated on $120-$150 per barrel oil. If that happens again, well, we've got bigger issues in this country again than the state of the NHL.

I'm not surprised that some Russians would rather stay there, especially guys like Radulov and Hudler (fine, he's not Russian) who get offered mid-level salaries that weren't matched in the NHL, and rookies who don't want to do 3 years at less than a million on an ELC that could see them sent to the AHL making $65,000, and I can see the Russians choosing to stay in 2014 if there's no deal to play in Sochi. I don't see them becoming a super-League stretching into Europe.

Edit: Chris Simon led the KHL in 08-09 with 263 penalty minutes. Well done, you goon.

I missed all that stuff last week. That changes the argument drastically, even to the point where there's not much of one anymore.

I have a very recent version of the Adobe flash player on my computer. Yet I cannot for the life of me get the videos on NHL.com to work. I always just get a blank, black screen when I could be looking at videos. It's really ****ing annoying.

What browser do you use? I occasionally have issues with NHL.com / sabres.nhl.com playing videos (I use Chrome).

This could probably be put in the Olympic thread, too, but since it was on Herr Betman's NHL Hour on NHL Radio, I'll post it here.

Herr Betman had Al Michaels on his show this afternoon on my way home from work. I missed the very begining of it, but it was basically Al telling all kinds of stories about 1980, how he got "traded" to NBC for an old Walt Disney cartoon, his college days at ASU and subsequent first major leauge job with the Cincinnati Reds, etc...

I thought it was pretty good and remained in the car in the garage to finish it out. The best part: Al wouldn't let Gary get a word in edgewise :D Betman basically just gave him a couple queues such as "1980" (seriously, that is about all he had to say) and "how were your college days" then Al took it from there. Very enjoyable.

Any podcasts available?

I wish my incredibly ****ty cable company would follow suit.

But at least I have VS, and there are a bunch of games next week.

The roster freeze ends in less than ten minutes and the trade deadline is Wednesday.

Are you ready for what should be a mad dash to get teams set for the playoff run?

I also ask that anyone reporting an Eklund rumor as something serious (and not in a mocking way) re-evaluate your life and be prepared to be mocked. :)

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Dumb speculation question:

Let's say Bettman says no NHL in the next Olympics, and the players say screw that and go anyway.

What happens to the players? Lawsuits for breach of contract? They get booted from the league? Other assorted penalties from the Wheel Of Justice (c) GLM?

The NHL can't afford to do anything but fine them. Is he going to suspend ovechkin, malkin, et. al.? Might as well chomp a shotgun because that would be a PR nightmare.

What about someone like Pavol Demitra (hence my WOJ reference)?

When push came to shove most of the players wouldn't go. Its easy to use bravado and say sure I'll go anyways: its another thing entirely if they have to give up millions of their money to go. Maybe Oveckhin goes. But if you think a majority of guys go anyways...you're crazy.

They might, depending on the penalties. If it's a suspension for a week or something, I think many would go (mostly the Euros, IMO). But if it's career-threatening, or blackballing, then I'd agree with you.

I think figuring out the possible end result could help in figuring out what is actually gonna happen.

It's all going to matter what, if any changes in the CBA say.

Exactly. So in my question, if the NHL is banking on the players staying (no matter what), the NHLPA can get away with a lot more. If many are really considering just up and going, the NHL might have to really play hardball.

Honestly, I don't think they players would sign onto something that basically tells them to go **** themselves if they want to play for their home country. I mean, I have definitely seen athletic unions basically cripple themselves but this is slightly different if you ask me.

What could the NHL possibly say or do to threaten their players. Without the Ovechkins, Malkins, and Crosbys this league would not be the same (as much as I hate to say that).

Oh I agree. But they ALL know what happens when a stoppage in play happens, and they ALL know it isn't good. I think a stoppage is the LAST thing they want, period. Hence the dilemma.

Who's gonna bend first? How far will one side go before the other bends? Trying to figure out all the results, and working backwards, will provide us with the probable answers, in my opinion.
