I don't know what's really humorous about the whole situation. Apparently mookie finds something funny about it.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

I'm not an eye for an eye kind of fellow, but if that was the case the Pens put Crosby and Malkin on the ice late...Bruins would have used Thornton to take one of them out.

Regardless, if Savard misses much time that might be the end of their season.

When your best player gets knocked out, someone on your team needs to be willing to take the 2+5+10 instigator penalty and pound the hell out of someone. If it's Crosby/Malkin, so be it. It's not like they can retaliate against your star anymore. He's already on a freaking stretcher.

paul steigerwald is a back stabbing jock sniffer. i don't think cooke feels any remorse. that comment to me, is funny.

it also was a hard hit, and a little from behind. but cooke didn't bring up any elbow (unlike the boston sportscaster keeps yelling) and made contact to savard's head because savard was low on the follow through. hockey hit. not a penalty (as it worked out on the ice). if they post suspend him now in "tom brady penalty" fashion, so be it. if the bruins want revenge next time they play the pens, so be that as well - it'll give them something to look forward to in an otherwise ****ty season.

Matt Cooke is a unremorseful bastage. Since when has he ever expressed remorse for any of his bad hits over the years? When you find some quotes, let me know. Otherwise shut up, you're a jock-sniffer in the opposite direction.

He lined up Savard and went for the head. He did bring his elbow up. Why did he raise his shoulder if he wasn't aiming for the head?

And using the incompetence of the official is quite brilliant. He misses the call and you're saying that's what makes it not a penalty. Hahahaha.

funny how cocksure even normal people get when your team is winning and something threatens that

That was an absolute strafe and Cooke knew what he was doing. He could have just as well knocked him over... instead he lined up his head and he had plenty of time not to do so.

edit: I'll retract part of that... Cooke couldn't hope to hit Savard down to the ice with a hit direct to the body... look how far back he had to come. Regardless, that hit was made with an intentional indifference to the impact... these things are usually emotions of the moment... and frankly Cooke has some ****-poor gut decision process when it comes to this stuff.

Matt Cooke has said it was shoulder to shoulder and he was hit like that earlier in the game, one shift earlier in the neutral zone.

Yep, unrepentant.

Where's mookie to spin that.

Matt Cooke is not only dirty, now he's a liar. If he thought it was shoulder to shoulder, why did he miss the rest of the game?

Riddle me that, Mookie the jock sniffer.

Why don't you just go search and pull up crazycanuck's old posts from a few years ago defending this clown. It'll save the effort of you "thinking".

this is correct. he stiffened his body to lay savard out. cooke was thinking, "if the head got the shoulder, so be it. if it was shoulder to shoulder, so be it." reckless, yes.

tba, what was the penalty to call there? roughing? shouldering?

No. Cooke straight up lied. And now you're defending his lies. What, are you a politician?

I don't expect him to admit what he did, its not like he was a stand up guy before with some sort of principles. But to actually lie and to say it was shoulder to shoulder then make a claim that he had been hit the same way one shift earlier? Come on.

How about elbowing? You think he didn't elbow but I think he did. If forearm shivers are legal, then I guess Cooke's in the clear.

The ref according to Bergeron said Cooke simply finished his check. From that angle, if he finished his check, he hit him with an elbow.

this is in no way an elbow.

suddenly i have sympathy for all those refs who you feel "missed" the call :p :p

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

The NHL is meeting right now to discuss concussions and head shots in Florida, where a panel of 8 or 9 guys is giving their findings to the GM's Monday.

The easiest thing to do is to say any blow to the head is an automatic 2 minutes, with a 4 minute double or 5 minute option based on severity, just like with high sticking and blood. Right now, a shoulder to the head is a legal play.

They could announce it Tuesday morning for that night's games. It took them about 24 hours to make Avery's stickwaving antics in front of Brodeur a penalty a couple years back, so there's no reason why they can't do this.

this seems easier than switching to 'no touch' icing. smart too.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

I see Matt Cooke's shoulder is only about 15 inches from his wrist. How odd.

At least when Cooke does something stupid, I can watch this:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M0ur5UOqf2I&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M0ur5UOqf2I&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

And have the same reaction as the guys recording it.

From the Boston Globe: Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a concussion as a result of an elbow by Matt Cooke at 14:23 of the third period. According to Claude Julien, Savard was knocked unconscious momentarily. Savard will remain in Pittsburgh overnight while his teammates travel to Toronto.

Julien said he expects Savard to be out "for a while." Julien termed it a classic blind-side hit.

Holy crap. Cooke was aiming for the head and got it. That's disgusting. He should be gone for a while - 10 games, maybe more.

Hearing Hughson makes me want to fire up NHL 2002.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

Right now, a shoulder to the head is a legal play.

Incidental contact is one thing and I don't want to see players penalized for accidents but this was at best indifferent contact... sorta like how negligent homicide is indifferent murder.

A large number of high sticking penalties tend to be incidental where the stick bounces off the other guys stick upwards or some other way.

Better to just take the decision away from the officials.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Part 3: After The Gold Rush

give tba a minute... he'll review the tape again and claim that it was an elbow AND a bite!

Mook, sorry my man, but you're wrong on this one. Look at the infamous hits to the head just this year: this one, and Aaron Marvin's on Blake Geoffrion, and Patrice Cormier on whoever it was in Quebec -- that was the worst; definitely beyond the other two -- but they're basically the same play: They all line up a guy blind-side, then turn right at the last second to just plausibly claim to be not behind. It's a punk move. It's like in basketball when somebody sticks their a55 out when you're up in the air; it makes you flip over and break your neck, and the guy can try and say, "Hey man, I was just standing there. You're trying to make the game all touchy-feely." B.S. Plus, you know hockey. You want to line someone up, knock them for a loop when their head is down? You do it right: straight on (like Shaughnessy or Grier would have done). Or, if it's really shoulder-to-shoulder, it sends the other guy flying through the air, cause you've knocked his feet out from under him. Look at all these hits; the guy who's hit doesn't go flying ten feet through the air; they drop, cause they've been elbowed in the head. This is an issue because it's a punk move, not because people want hockey to be un-physical.
