UNH at UVM 11/14/09 postponed

UNH at UVM 11/14/09 postponed

I have heard from several reliable sources that the game tomorrow at Vermont has been postponed due to a large number of UNH players being sick. There is nothing on the website yet, and I am awaiting confirmation from the coaching staff, but if you'd planned on making the trip up, don't leave yet~

I just got the official no-go from the hockey office. No reschedule date available yet.

It has been confirmed, the game has indeed been postponed due to the flu overrunning the team.

I'm actually surprised that this is not happening more with other teams, women and men. Lots of germ-sharing in those locker rooms, and many teammates share the same housing units.

Todate four womens college games have been canceled in the last two weeks in the OUA (Ontario Conference of the CIS) as a result of H1N1.

Are all of the UNH fans out with the flu as well -- I don't remember the last time I had to look for your thread on page 2. Any thoughts on the Harvard game last night? I realize it was an away game, but if the Crimson fans have insights, they have yet to post them.

My thoughts...

UNH really looked like they didn't have their legs in the 1st, which makes sense considering the bug that ran through the team. They showed flashes of dominance, but at times they were running around in their own end, with Harvard owning possession. The HU goal was during one of these "tired" spells... Dman just made a blind pass from behind the goal line right onto the HU stick at the left circle. Horn was the exception; she was all over the place every time she was on the ice.

The 2nd period was completely different. UNH had a few hiccups, but it was fairly boring from our end of the ice. UNH controlled much of the play territorially. It felt like they spent the whole period in the Harvard end. Nice chances on the PP but no luck. A crossbar denied one goal. A few "oh crap" moments when Harvard did bring it into the UNH end.

The last period was a great to watch; an up tempo, back and forth skating game, with nice chances for both teams. As much as I was glad when the ref FINALLY whistled HU for hooking (after ignoring 3 blatant interference calls), it felt like one of those games where a PP might decide the winner. And UNH nearly stuffed it in on that PP. Nice to see the 'Cats kill the late penalty that carried over into OT.

Overall, given the lack of practice over the past week, I was happy with the result. I'll take the tie against a quality club on the road. I think that once the 'Cats get the legs back fully, they can be quite formidable when they put together a complete game.

Off The Iron: Kelly Paton watches as a Micaela Long backhander beats Harvard's Christina Kessler but catches iron and bounces clear.

You might guess from the user name that I am a Harvard fan.

From my viewpoint a great game to watch. Yes, I would have liked a Harvard win but as a game to watch, wonderful with great skills from both sides. I am eager for Rybkina to get back on the ice. Rumor has it she will be back playing in another week,

I agree, and with Freak's assessment as well (If you change ends to stay in the 'Cat's attacking zone as is my habit, you'd have gotten more out of the second, although I'm glad I wasn't any closer when Harvard rung the post down there:eek: )

After the game, Harvard and UNH fans alike exchanged comments about what a good game it was. Lots of OT for everyone this year~

We have a big weekend coming up, with a youth clinic tomorrow staffed by members of Team USA, who will be arriving in Durham tonight, followed by UNH - RPI at 5pm, and on Sunday we play host to the Hockey East All Stars vs Team USA. Lots of prep work, and not much time (yet) for reflection on the midweek game.

I was content with the tie as a spectator, knowing what the health status of many of the players was in the days leading up to the game. The Wildcat's ability to find their legs in the first, and pour it on for 40 more minutes was a pleasant surprise to me. Horn certainly did move well, as did Kelly Cahill, who never stops digging. Raylen Dziengelewski is playing so well this year. She's really showing leadership on the ice.

Harvard has some very skilled players. Fortunately we disrupted them most of the time.

Paton / Minton

Paton / Minton

I was talking to Ms. Zaugg-Siergeij yesterday, and she told me she had Lindsey as a camper in hockey camp a few years ago, and was happy to see that she'd gone on to play in college. Way to go ladies!

UNH's Paton and Minton receive accolade from Women's Hockey East
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario) and Lindsey Minton (Richardson, Texas) of the University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team were honored as Pure Hockey Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, by Hockey East on Monday.

Paton received the same distinction Nov. 2 and was also honored as Hockey East Player of the Month for October.

The duo helped the Wildcats extend their unbeaten streak to seven games (4-0-3) with a 1-1 tie at Harvard University (Nov. 18) and a 4-3 victory at home against Rensselaer (Nov. 21).

Paton, a senior forward and captain, recorded her second career hat trick and also matched her career high in points (four) to spearhead the team’s comeback victory against RPI. Her first goal of the game gave the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead and her next goal pulled the team within 3-2 in the second stanza. Paton set up the game-tying goal at 7:49 of the final frame and scored the game-winning goal on an unassisted effort off a faceoff at 9:37.

Minton, a sophomore goaltender, stopped 45 of 49 shots for a .918 save percentage, 1.92 GAA and 1-0-1 record in two games vs. ECAC opponents. She opened the week with a season-high 27 saves in the 1-1 tie at Harvard in which she held the Crimson scoreless in the final 59:39 of the game. In the game vs. RPI, Minton did not surrender a goal in the final 33:07 of action to backbone UNH’s comeback effort.

In 14 games this season, Paton has 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points. She leads the team in goals, game-winning goals (three), points and shooting percentage (.192), and is second in assists, plus/minus (+8), power-play goals (three) and shots (52). With those numbers, Paton is second in the nation in points per game, third in assists per game and eighth in goals per game.

Minton has started eight games this season and is 5-1-2 with a 2.00 GAA, .898 save percentage and one shutout. She is ranked 12th in the nation in goals-against-average.

New Hampshire (9-1-4 overall, 4-0-1-0 Hockey East) returns to action Nov. 29 at Northeastern University and the Wildcats’ next home game is Dec. 5 against Providence College. Both games are at 2 p.m.

We have had so little television media coverage of NH Women's hockey despite having two NCAA perennial powers in two different leagues. WMUR has a poll posted on their sports main page asking which s your favorite UNH sport. Women's Hockey is an option, so make your voice heard. Even if you're not a UNH Women's HOCKEY FAN - MORE COVERAGE WILL HELP OUR SPORT NO MATTER WHAT!

PATON GARNERS SECOND STRAIGHT PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD FROM HOCKEY EAST
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario), a senior forward and captain of the fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was honored as the Pure Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday. It is the second consecutive week and third time overall this season Paton has received this award.

Paton recorded two points with a goal and an assist to lead UNH to a 2-1 victory at seventh-ranked Northeastern University on Nov. 29. Her unassisted shorthanded goal – she stole the puck in the offensive zone – gave the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead with 33 seconds remaining in the first period and she set up the shorthanded game-winning goal that broke a 1-1 tie with 3:27 to play in regulation. Paton recorded a game-high eight shots and had a +2 rating.

In 15 games this season, Paton has 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points to rank No. 3 in the nation in points per game (1.87), fifth in assists per game (1.13) and eighth in goals per game (0.73); she is also tied for third in game-winning goals (three) and 15th in power-play goals (three). Paton leads UNH in goals, game-winning goals, points and shooting percentage (.183) and she is second in assists, power-play goals and plus/minus (+10). Paton also leads Hockey East in points and points per game, goals and goals per game and power-play points (14); she ranks second in assists and assists per game.

UNH (10-1-4 overall, 5-0-1-0 Hockey East) has the nation’s longest active unbeaten streak of eight games (5-0-3). The Wildcats return to action Dec. 5 at home against longtime rival Providence College. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.

The UNH athletic department's annual "Toys for Tots" campaign will be held at the Dec. 5 game. Marines will be on hand to collect the new, unwrapped toys. Tickets for the game are available at the Whittemore Center box office, online at www.unhwildcats.com and through TicketMaster.

PATON REPEATS AS PLAYER OF THE MONTH IN WOMEN'S HOCKEY EAST
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario), a senior forward and captain on the third-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named Hockey East Player of Month for November, the league announced Tuesday. She was also the recipient of the award for October.

It marked the second Hockey East award in as many days for Paton, who was feted as Pure Hockey Player of the Week on Monday. Paton also received that award Nov. 23 and Nov. 2.

Paton recorded seven goals and six assists for 13 points in six November games; those numbers calculate to 1.17 goals per game, 1.00 assists per game and 2.17 points per game. Paton’s other numbers included two game-winning goals, a power-play goal, a shorthanded goal, a +6 rating and a .212 shooting percentage.

In four league games, she tallied nine points (4g, 5a). She had five points (2g, 3a) in three games vs. nationally-ranked teams.

Paton recorded her second career hat trick and also matched her personal best of four points vs. Rensselaer on Nov. 21. She factored directly into 65% of the team’s goals in November with 13 points on 20 goals, and that included a stretch of a goal or assist on each of the last six goals of the month.

In Hockey East’s eight-year history, Paton is the third player to win back-to-back Player of the Month awards. Former teammate Sam Faber became the first to accomplish the feat (Nov. & Dec. ’07) and Boston College’s Kelli Stack did so last year (Oct. & Nov. ’08).

Dating back to last season, a UNH student-athlete has won each of the last five Hockey East Player of the Month awards – Paton has been honored a total of three times, including January 2009. Jenn Wakefield was selected in December 2008 and February 2009.
