'18-'19 NESCAC season

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

there was that 1vs8 disaster a few years back... /QUOTE]

Middlebury did indeed lose to Conn 2-1 OT in the NESCAC quarters in 2014. An incident occurring in the last game of the regular season (a 3-2 loss at Norwich) was followed by a strangely similar play in practice that week (teammate on teammate) resulting in the team captains and coaches suspending the two players (combined 26 goals and 50 points on a team scoring a total of 81 goals and 222 points) for the NESCAC playoff the following Saturday. Conn won the playoff and we all headed south to Williamstown for the NESCAC finals the following weekend (which may happen again, but there are those nasty quarterfinals first).

Crazy as it sounds, it's not out of the question that all 4 high seeds loose this weekend. It's been that kind of year...A hot goalie and a lucky goal and there you go...Wesly in the finals!

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Well this was a wild weekend for the NESCAC.

Williams takes care of the Wesleyan and hosts the semi finals and finals next weekend.

The Middlebury / Conn College game was exciting. Midd looked flat for the first two periods. Conn scores twice in the second period. Midd comes alive in the third period. With Han pulled in the last two minutes, scores twice in the last minute of the third period (a nice tip and a scrum in front of the net). Midd scores early in the overtime period to win.

The Amherst / Trinity game was going into the second half of the third period with Trinity leading 1-0. Amherst scores twice in less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead. Trinity then ties the score less than a minute to go. Amherts manages the upset by scoring early in the Overtime.

Hamilton wins over Colby 3-1 (1 ENG).

This sets up the semi-finals of Williams vs Amherst and Midd vs Hamilton next weekend.

It was great seeing all the teams play well. And good luck to all the teams next weekend.

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Old news, but amazing afternoon Saturday at Kenyon saw Midd storm back from down 2 with :37 to play, winning 3-2 in OT against Conn College.

The win was the most stunning comeback I have seen. Conn built an early lead on a carryover powerplay in the 2nd. Helm fought along the left half boards, out to Dillion at left point and across to Michel for a rip from inside edge right circle high slot, in under Panther goalie Han. Minutes later Michel and Gualtiere sprung Dillion on a breakaway. Dillion came wide left and with a D drapped over her, holding her edge and on her backhand, converged on the crease with the puck in the net beneath Han. No penalty or goalie interference: well played.

Middlebury was energized playing the 3rd, but Camel goalie Mertz was outstanding and had great D support in the kill zone. Looking at the closing moments of their collegiate careers Jackson and Marotta led the Panther charge in the final seconds. Playing with the extra attacker, Jackson fed Marotta in the high slot and her open look wrist shot sailed in over Mertz with :37 to play. Following the faceoff with empty net looming behind, Portner got the puck to Zumwinkle for a drive which Mertz fought off only to have Jackson dig the puck home.

Gualtiere challenged Han in the opening seconds of OT with a blast from low edge left circle that Han shouldered to the left corner. A quality scoring chance, but it just was not the Camels' day. The gamewinner saw Jackson muscle the puck loose in the right circle, get a shot towards the net. Letterie deflected the initial shot and Camel netminder Mertz made the stop but Leidt caught the rebound and backhanded the puck up, floating over Mertz and into the net.

Typical Conn. When you go into a shell and try to protect at 2 goal lead, [and get badly outshot in the 3rd] you will inevitably lose the game. I recall it happened to them in playoffs vs. Bowdoin back in 2015 in nearly identical fashion...Steele never learns.

That said, on the OT goal, the refs missed a clear Midd icing, and then an obvious checking penalty that knocked the Conn D-woman flying, right in front of the goal, that gave Midd the open space they needed to score the OT winner.

Steele rusted out long ago. Change there is way overdue.

Safe travels to all making their way into the Purple Valley for this weekend's NESCAC finals

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Williams continued their late season run skating past Norwich 3-1 in an NCAA first round game this evening at Lansing-Chapman. Backstopped by Heiting making 32 of 33 saves on the night, and outshot 27-14, yet tied 1-1 after 2, the Ephs stepped up in the 3rd and carried home the win.

The 1st saw Norwich with good chances early. As an Eph powerplay ended, a terrible change resulted in a quick 3x1 to the top of the crease, but Heiting covered with no rebound. At 9: Labbe fired a shot from low right circle, missing wide to Heiting's gloveside, but Labbe found the carom of the backboards, only to be denied by Heiting at the stickside post. Conway made a nifty try at 15:45, using a skate to pass to herself cutting across the slot.

Early in the 2nd the Ephs got on the board; Reisman digging the puck from deep in the right corner, Halloran curling up the half boards at the top edge of the right circle, finding space for a shot on Lambert in net for the Cadets; Brustad found the rebound low edge left circle and put the puck home. The Cadets came back with a powerplay goal. Piracini moved the puck down the left side snd Conroy put the puck on net from wide low near the goal line and Conway caught the rebound beating Heiting at the gloveside post. The goal put life in the Norwich attack but they were unable to solve Heiting and the period ended 1-1.

Conway had a good try at 1:18 of the 3rd, skipping through the D for a backhand in Heiting's grill. Heiting made the save of the night at 4: thwarting a 2x1 as McGovern received a pass from the right and required Heiting to move back across to get her right stickside pad extended and block the try from the edge of the crease. Williams scored the game winner following a faceoff in the left circle. Rush won to Brustad and she moved high out of the circle and dropped a pass to the left point; Puppe fired a long shot through and in for the 2-1 lead. The insurance goal mid period was a grind and grit sort of score. Quigley fought in the right corner and Reisman moved along the backboards behind the net, made a quick spin turn reversing and feeding Dunn for the score from the top of the crease, beneath Lambert. A late penalty prevented Norwich getting the extra attacker on and Williams advances with the 3-1 win.

Congratulations to Coach Gillis and the Ephs on returning to the NCAA quarters for the first time since 2004!

Norwich showed again last night that if they played in the 'Cac.... they'd just be middle of the pack.

Right outshooting over 60 minutes and clearly outplaying the NESCAC champs for 2 periods in their own rink constitutes a middle of the pack NESCAC team.

Williams has a good team this year and I wish them well vs. Plattsburgh. Heiting is very good and Ephs have a tough top line. Norwich did a pretty good job containing Halloran but Brustad and Puppe each stepped up

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Outshooting a team doesn't always = "outplayed". Williams had the better chances and cashed in.

Norwich is a good team. Nothing more, nothing less.
If they played in the 'Cac they wouldn't make the NCAA's [because this year they'd be 3rd or 4th].

I disagree. Norwich was ALL OVER Williams in the second period. Especially late. Just couldn’t get the second goal. Hit a post or two and Heiting made some saves.

2 minutes before Williams scored the fluke second goal, McGovern was robbed on a side to side sprawled out pad save by Heiting.

Williams was the better team in the third period and that is what won them the game and Heiting had a big reason for it being 1-1 heading to the third.

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Another NESCAC season in the books and sadly the third consecutive with no NESCAC surviving to make the finals.

I attended my first game Pearl Harbor Day, 2001 (Midd at Bowdoin...3-2 Midd extending their 120+ win streak against DIII opponents).

I have no accurate way of knowing how many games I've witnessed (700-800?). How many dreams have ended on the ice at Stafford...

I would like to thanks all the players, parents and especially the coaches for taking the time and sharing their world! Thank you all so very much.
