'18-'19 NESCAC season

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

The thing I couldn't hear on the video, but could when attending the game, was hearing the puck hit the post on the way in. When the shot first went toward the goal and heard the distinctive clang I thought the usual off the post and out. The brief half second until the ref indicated the goal was spend looking for the puck.

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

It looks like the puck changes direction off the Norwich defender's stick (#8) as she puts it in the shot lane. Still a very smart time and place to shoot from and that's usually why and when pucks go into the opponent's net!

I've replayed this a bunch since you brought it up and it looks more like it touches the inside of Benoit's skate as opposed to her stick. You definitely hear a noise around the time Shuchuk shoots through her.

Predicting the Always Impossible...

Ammy vs. Hammy 3 Points for Ammy

Colby vs. Middy 3 points for Middy

Conny vs. Bowie Splitsville

Trinny vs. Wesly 3 points for Wesly

I got to the point of considering influencing the outcomes by predicting against my true thoughts because I was so continually wrong.

Have to love the NESCAC, especially late season:

Amherst, Conn and Hamilton tied for #3, 14 points, at 6-5-2 all playing game 14 today.

Colby, 14 points (7-8 NESCAC), playing game 16 this afternoon, hoping to stave off Trinity, 13 points (5-4-3 NESCAC), but playing only game 13 this afternoon.

Wesleyan, 7 points (3-8-1 NESCAC), sits 8th playing game 13 this afternoon (Trinity home and home weekend).

Bowdoin, 4 points (2-11 NESCAC), is the cellar dweller and faces elimination from NESCAC conference tournament play for the first time in history, plays game 14 this afternoon.

Williams, 18 points (8-4-2 NESCAC) plays non-conference this weekend (home and home against Oswego). The Ephs play Middlebury home and home next weekend.

Middlebury has 20 points (9-2-2 NESCAC) plays game 14 this afternoon.

Williams needs at least 3 points from the Midd home and home to tie for 1st.

Hope you all get out to support the players and attend a game!

Tie breaking per the NESCAC website:

Tie Breaking Procedures

Ties will be broken as follows:

Head-to-head result (if teams play each other more than once during the regular season, the game that appears on the league schedule will be the game that is counted).

If teams tied during the regular season, or there is a 3-way or more tie, the following tie breaking procedure will be used:
•Best record among tying teams, against one another (head-to-head).
•Most conference wins (in games that are part of the conference schedule and count toward league standings).
•Comparison of results of conference games played against top 4 teams (including all teams at the 4th spot).
•Comparison of results of conference games played against top 8 teams (including all teams at the 8th spot).
•Comparison of results of conference games played against conference teams in rank order.
•Comparisons shall be made one team at a time starting with the highest ranked team.
•If the tie remains after comparing results against the highest ranked team, the results against the next team in rank order shall be used. This process is continued until a winner is determined.
•Coin flip (or similar random action involving all tied teams).

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

What a difference a day (or 18 hours) makes. The White Mules did indeed 'take down' the Panthers, in front of a large gathering of

Panther alumnae no less, as this was the annual women's/men's hockey alum weekend. Colby goalie San Roman came back from an

early exit Friday evening and did it by shutting out Middlebury with a 27 save afternoon for the 1-0 win. Colby scored the game's lone

goal late in the 1st. An errant stretch pass became an icing with the faceoff in the left circle, stickside of Goldstein in the Midd net.

Klein won the draw, right to Kuhn. Kuhn had enough space to advance and get the puck on net from low in the left circle. Goldstein

parried the shot, but it was up her stickside shoulder and in the net. The Panthers had chances the rest of the way, but the Colby D

controlled play in front of San Roman much more effectively than on Friday. The game was fast paced end to end play. Colby played

wary of the stretch pass and was effective breaking up Midd transition across the blueline into the offensive zone. The Panthers were

able to work on the perimeter, but the Mules blocked a lot of shots and packed things in supporting San Roman. Just a thought, but

perhaps Midd shouldn't play on Saturday?

and THAT in a nutshell, is why the 'Cac is the best Conf in the country, year in, and year out [Shelflit's comments notwithstanding]. one of the best teams in the country playing a "mediocre" 'Cac team...that they smoked the night before...in front of their former teammates...and they lose. You never see that in the other conferences where you have 1 or 2 strong teams and a lot of filler.

I’m not sure anyone has disputed the NESCAC being the deepest conference in D3 women’s hockey for quite some time now. Maybe the last time they weren’t was when RIT, Utica, Elmira and Plattsburgh were all together in the old ECAC West.

i will agree most competitive conference .... not the best conference !

Deepest and the best. granted, they may not have the best team every year, but there are no Weak Sisters like everywhere else. When you come to play a 'Cac team [even lowly Bowdion]...you'd better bring it, to you're going to lose. Sorry, but that's just not the case everywhere else [where you have 1-2 great teams, 3-4 average and 4-5 lousy].

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

What is with the goalies?

Grant absolutely stones Midd (37/37) and is lit up by Trinity (22/28)

San Roman is pulled Friday (6/24) and rebounds for a shutout win Saturday (27/27)

Is the 'play the Panthers on Saturday' effect that strong?

Does Wesly win over Trinn today officially KO the PooBears??

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Yes. Even if the Bear's win both games against Trinity, the cardnials have the tie breaker (a win and a tie against Williams, vs 2 losses).

I'm not assuming this will happen, but stranger things have.

Thought that would be the case.

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Williams (17-4-3, 10-4-2 NESCAC) won the regular season NESCAC championship for the first time by skating to a 2-1 OT win against Middlebury (14-6-3, 9-5-2 NESCAC) this evening at Lansing-Chapman. Heiting (27/28) was strong in net for Williams, outdueling Middlebury's Han (22/24) for the win.

The Ephs took the lead late in the 1st. Welch launched a long low wrist shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off a D skate, changing direction and in beneath Panther goalie Han. Assists to O'Connor and Reisman on the play.

Williams appeared to score shorthanded early in the 2nd. Midd net minder Han parried a drive from top of the left circle with her left pad and the rebound was in from low edge of the right circle, however no goal was ruled due to contact with goalie Han on the play.

Midd was finally able to beat Eph goalie Heiting as time ran down in the 3rd. Barney won a puck in the neutral zone and lugged it wide down the left boards, turned the D, walked in and got the puck on net. Heiting made the initial save, but Portner found the rebound as she raced into the slot and put the puck in up over Heiting. The Ephs had great chances in the closing minute and the horn sounded with a mad scramble at the Middlebury crease.

OT ended with Dunn scoring unassisted, making a play grabbing a Midd breakout as she came off the left wing half boards, walking into open space in the slot and beating Han low for the game winning, NESCAC regular season title winning goal.

NESCAC playoffs next Saturday will see #1 Williams host #8 Wesleyan and #2 Middlebury host #7 Conn College. Amherst (11-10-2, 7-6-3 NESCAC) needs a point against Wesleyan Sunday to move past Colby (12-9-3, 8-8 NESCAC) for #5. Hamilton (15-7-2, 9-5-2 NESCAC) ties for #2 with Midd, but Midd owns the tie breaker. Trinity (11-10-3, 8-5-3 NESCAC) earned the #4 seed.

Congratulations to the Eph players and Coach Gillis on their weekend!

Re: '18-'19 NESCAC season

Has Williams ever swept both Amherst and Middlebury?

Williams swept Amherst in years prior to '05-'06, back in the distant early years of NCAA DIII women's hockey, when Williams was in the mix at the top and Amherst had yet to establish a solid program. The Ephs made the NCAAs in '02-'03, losing a quarterfinal at Manhattanville 5-1. I was told last evening at Lansing-Chapman that this was the Ephs first sweep of the Panthers and obviously the first time achieving both in the same season.

something tells me you will see several upsets this weekend....wouldn't be surprised if Hamilton lost in round 1 [as usual]...Midd also looks vulnerable based on the losing streak they're on, and they did tie Conn earlier in the year and there was that 1vs8 disaster a few years back... and I would hardly call Amherst an underdog vs Trinny.
