The entire state did a collective "What?" with a jaw drop when it was announced. Almost everyone had it picked in the bottom pair of the four names suggested. With that, they played up the theme nicely in the Xcel Energy Center. Still, nobody was impressed by it other than the namby-pambies who picked the name in the first place.
It's f-cking stupid. Every time I hear it I think "Jesus Christ."

Vikings are the winningest team to never win the super bowl. IIRC, their winning percentage is more in line with teams that have won it 3 or 4 times.

Why? The Sabres have always foiled to get the Stanley Cup. You can say they have been on fence of sometimes very good, sometimes very bad. Currently, they are very bad.
The Good. Have made the Stanley Cup Finals twice (1975, 1999), while having their best stretches from the mid-late 1970’s and early 1980’s known as the French Connection, and the late 1990’s when Dominik Hasek was between the pipes.
The Bad. The Sabres have missed the playoffs in eight of the last ten seasons, and currently has missed out in the last six seasons.
The Ugly. Well, playing in Buffalo is never pretty. Changing from their traditional blue and gold to black and red in 1996 was one of the more baffling uniform changes, the Sabres wised up and changed back in 2006.
Where they play. Key Bank Center, never open up an account with this bank. Originally known as the Crossgates Arena, it replaced the aging Buffalo Memorial Auditorium ‘The Aud’ in 1996.
Owner: Terry Pegula, owner of most of Western New York. Helped found the Penn State Hockey Team causing massive chaos along most of college hockey.
Coach: Phil Housley, Hockey Hall of Fame Member who had a standout career as a defensemen, spent his first eight seasons with the Sabres. Currently, his first season as coach.
Top Current Players: Evander Kane, Jack Eichel, and Ryan O’Reilly

French Connection was the nickname for their top line, not the team. That, along with the Rangers GAG line (for Goal A Game), were the top two lines in the NHL at the time.
Before naming rights were sold (when it was being built) it was known as the Crossroads Arena, not Crossgates. The arena opened up as the Marine Midland Arena, whose headquarters, where it was founded, was in Buffalo. When HSBC bought out Marine Midland, it changed to HSBC Arena. When HSBC sold off their entire Western NY branch system to First Niagara, it became First Niagara Center. KeyCorp then bought out First Niagara, changing the arena name to the KeyBank Center.
Just another reason why naming rights suck...
Oh, and you "forgot" about the JumboTron falling to the ice in 1996 when maintenance was being performed on it, minutes after practice ended, causing that night's game against the Bruins to be cancelled.
