12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrated?

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

5 civilized minutes...perhaps the Zebras counted the discussion about the goal counting as time served....
Really? Here are the NCAA Rules:

Rule 91 - Tied Games
91.1 Tied Games - If the score is tied at the end of three regulation 20-minute
periods, the following shall take place (Exception: See 91.3):
1. There shall be a two-minute intermission.
2. The teams shall change ends at the end of each period.
3. A five-minute period shall be played.
4. The team that scores first wins and the game is ended. If a goal is not
scored in the five-minute period, the game shall be declared a tie.

Rough game between J&W and SNH...4 game misconducts.. 4 roughing penalties..3 hitting after the whistle...1 kneeing penalty.. 1 spearing penalty...1 elbowing penalty.. 2 boardings...

That goal did not go in before time ran out. I looked at the clock before the last faceoff in regulation and it was 12.9 seconds up on the board. Off the faceoff the puck ended up in the corner and pinned against the boards. I glanced up I saw 4 and change and it still was not off the boards. I counted down in my head watching the play. That must have been the slowest 4 seconds known to man or someone hit the pause button. No way that was a legit goal, but turns out it didn't matter in the end.

Also on that play if they are claiming that time was left, they never dropped the puck for a faceoff after the goal. Granted it would be only a second if thats what they claim, but they never dropped the puck until overtime started.

Back from the game...

I'll stand by what I said on air. There was less than one second left when the puck was on the stick of the player who passed it across to Corcoran... almost impossible for the puck to have gotten on his stick, let alone cross the goal line before time expiring.

Also, I agree with the last poster in saying that there should have been a puck drop even it it was with .0000001 second on the clock just to signify that time was left when the goal was scored. That said, I've seen NHL situations where they failed to it as well.

Overall, tough situation for the officials... I just called it like I saw it. Made for a fun broadcast. Thanks to all that tuned in, highlights will be up tomorrow.

I know right. There were thrown into quite the situation and messed themselves in handling it. But, what are you going to do. I wanted to come see you after that goal and get your take on OT to make myself feel better lol. But, I knew there was not enough time with the 2 minute intermission and how packed it was there I would have lost my spot.

Who the hell has a five minute break before OT????

No disrespect, but relying on a radio announcers countdown to determine whether the goal went in on time is basically the most absurd thing I've heard in a long, long time.
with even more respect he is a pretty good announcer thats for sure..:D

Impossible to tell without a scoreboard and an overview of the goal to see when the puck crossed the line.
time code of the original video from a stoppage of play and a shot of the clock will get you close...if you go by Keeley's call and the full second increments on youtube, the celebration began just before zero....

WTOP's Chris Horvatits on Twitter this morning - "Spoke with SUNYAC and ECAC West Coordinator of Officials Jeff Fulton on the situation at the end of regulation between Oswego and Hobart. Jeff told me that the correct call was made on the ice. Hobart goal should have counted and it did. Jeff added "technically (the officials) should have dropped the puck. Goal was scored with 1 tenth of a second on the clock".

That would make the clock operator the player of the game in regulation???:D:D:D

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

Here you go... you be the judge...

While it's tempting to say, based on the verbal countdown, that it was late, there are a few things to consider: Was the person counting down staring at the clock while doing so? If not, it's obviously not going to be exact. Even if they were, it's VERY difficult to make that as exact as we would need it here. Second thing to consider is that we can't actually see from this angle WHEN the puck crossed the line, only when the ref signaled goal. There's always going to be a delay before goal is signaled (the ref needs enough time to SEE it, ACKNOWLEDGE that he sees it, and SIGNAL that he's seen it). So, really, this video will prove nothing even with a superimposed clock.

The only thing the video shows me, however, is that there were 2 officials in great position to see the puck cross (as they should be), and BOTH of them immediately signaled goal. Confidently, at that. Now, they went back and discussed it to make sure they got the call right, which is an even better sign. The refs were certainly trying to make sure they got it right.

As for the question in the video of "how can it count if there's no time left on the clock?"... it's not the first time I've seen it, even at the NHL level... puck goes in with 0.2 seconds left or something, and they don't put that time back on the clock, because that's about enough time for the players to see the ref drop the puck. Not worth the hassle for anyone, just get on with OT.

Let me let you in on a little secret -- there are ways of keeping time and there are ways of keeping time. If my team is ahead in the late seconds, my finger is real close to the start button. If we're behind, it's a bit farther away and a tad slower to turn it on. Very few can discern a 1/10 - 2/10th of a second delay in starting the clock.

And in late news - St. Thomas shut out Hamline 2-0 (per the UST web page)

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

I was the one doing the countdown, and I can tell you that my last glance at the clock was around 3 seconds to go. I'm going to experiment more with time codes and such...

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

Joe, you bring up what I spoke to Mike about last night. Why can't their be an official who keeps track of the clock and have either NCAA or conference goal judges as well so there are no biases involved.

I counted down after that last faceoff slowly and looked up around the same time as Mike and I did a pretty good job of counting down with the clock. There was 4 seconds like I said elsewhere when I looked up I continued to countdown while watching the play and I was below two seconds before the pass was made for the game winning goal. I swear they got an extra 2 seconds or so. But, as some of the boys have said..we won it anyway.
