12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrated?

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

Hockeyfan2113,
My brother and I both agreed that we may meet at the end of the year in the NCAA's. That would be quite interesting who would get home ice and all but that is eons away.

Hobart played a great game and Broadwater has been a fantastic goalie in my eyes for the last four years. Going off your post of how Hobart was banged up, so was Oswego. Not sure if you knew or not but our captain Jon Whitelaw and one of our better offensive weapons and point man on the PP was out and has been out for weeks. Luke Moodie our second leading scorer was banged up pretty good from the night before. We had no healthy scratches as Kim-Swallow is out as well as Peter Rodrigues who has been out for some time. I'm sure at this point in the season there are a few others who have bumps and bruises as does every team.

So I think both teams were even on that front. We (Oswego) had a D man playing forward at times the last two nights and there was a lot of shifting of lines. So one thing I can agree on with you is that both teams will be looking different down the road and will be NCAA Tourney contenders.

Thanks for the response, yeah I know about Whitelaw, Eli, and Rodrigues. Eli and I were talking a bit during the game about it as he had played with Stevens and Salituro and was wondering how they were doing and he was telling me about their injuries. Both teams have risen above their injuries so far (11-1-2 and 9-2-0) and as you said these teams will be different once when everyone gets healthy. I thought both teams played great, I was particularly impressed with how Oz was able to get up and play after a tough game against Utica who as of now looks like they will be up there but we will see if they can continue that in the 2nd half.

My main issue was I have just been reading the posts here discussing the game and also how people were trying to slight Hobart after the Buff state game so I figured I would step up and point out some things.

I would love to Hobart play Oswego again mostly because both teams stayed away from the BS with just the two exceptions near the end of the game so it made for entertaining hockey. Past two years now have been tight, thrilling games and a NCAA battle (if its like anything like Saturday) would be exciting for everyone.

Sorry you don't like it but Hobart is one of the highest over rated teams out there right now. Ive seen a lot of the top tier teams who are also banged up, and there are still a few who are above Hobart. Do I think they are junk team? No way. You can not make the amount of turnovers and mistakes I've seen Hobart make this year. Oswego failure to blow the game wide open was more in part to Oswego's failure to finish then Hobart denying it. They gave up close to 8-10 odd man rushes in the first period alone Saturday night. They also get the big help playing in the minor hockey rink Rec Center. Besides the rough ice, the low glass has the puck going out of play on every other shot.

Had Hobart played like the last 2 minutes in the game during the rest of the game I'd say they deserve a decent ranking. Can they make some noise? Maybe. I would have loved to see the game played at the CC. Not for the home ice for Oswego but to see how Hobart handled the big clean ice. I would say Hobart is right around a Buff Stateish type team, and while 5-6 years ago this would be a slap in the face, not so much anymore, but I think Oswego wins those games 8 out of 10 times.

Lost in all this clock talk is all the puck watching the Lakers were doing on that last sequence. It is a habit that has burned them in the past, Amherst in Placid for an example. Carr was the D Man in front of the net and he stayed home which was great but he left the forward on the back door completely untouched and focused solely on the puck. They have got to stop doing that late in games because eventually the overtime heroics will be provided by the other team.
I just watched the video monday morning sort of speaking, and YES he has to watch the backdoor, not only the puck his head has to be on a swivel at all times, pickup a man at least and get his stick ,that time of the game is a free-for-all,you can do just about anything to defend your net and that player at the net ,or anywhere else can just about tackle the opponent, every oz player should have at the least a handfull of the opponents jersey:D

Coming to mind off the top of my head a day and a half later I think of two plays where Hobart could have scored but didn't. The second pp, Salituro just misses getting the puck on his stick on an empty net and instead kicks it in...that would have tied it 1-1. Then in the second Hare robbed Kovacs to keep it 2-0. Those are just two where Hobart came close to completely change the game in the first and the second instead of in the last two minutes.

I don't know how you can call this team overrated. This is Hobart's first loss since February 10th. I am not the best at math but I think thats a 16-1-2 record now in the last 17 games. Just this year, they have beaten M-ville and swept Neumann, dominated Genny at Genny (who beat platty) Also they won all of their games in front of them (no matter how hard/easy the schedule, they still did it) until Saturday, which is more than can be said about Platty, Utica, SNC, etc. So they deserved to be ranked highly for being undefeated when they were.

I know everyone is roughed up about injuries but to be missing both men on the top d-pair, another senior leader at forward, etc, you are looking at a team barely at 90% much less 100.

To claim the rough ice and low glass is more of a benefit to Hobart is a little silly. Yes its home ice but rough ice can still affect you negatively as new bumps and patches can appear and the wrong deflection can still go over the glass. I would say a majority of the turnovers on both sides and missed opportunities comes from the ice more so than anything else.

Or the two posts that Oswego his before? Or the one that went off of Broadwaters head? Or the wide open net the Laker missed high? Please. Even when Brockport and Buff State were two of the worst teams in the SUNYAC they would still get chances. Grade A scoring chances were not even close, especially 5 on 5. No one said the puck was in Hobarts end for 60+ minutes and Hobart got two lucky goals. They worked hard and didnt stop working.

So I'm guessing you think Northern Iowa deserves a BCS bid too right? Where were you when Adrian was around in the first few years? Dominated Genny huh? Really thats why they were almost outshot 2 to 1...right. Yes they did beat Plattsburgh, want a cookie? They also lost to Oswego, which Plattsburgh AND Utica has beat. I know you wouldn't know this because Hobart forgot to add that in their program they put out Saturday night. Manhatanville....another team whos played?? Neumann...a team who had a hard time with the 4 win ECACNE Salve Regina and the 1-12-2 Morrisonville Ponies.

You can "rank" all you want, but the visual test shows Hobart is not a #3 team, hense overrated.

Plattsburgh beat Oswego with 4.5 defensemen as Emery put it. One of their best forwards had to play defense. One of their top forwards was also left home on the trip. I guess if that's an excuse then maybe Hobart should work on depth....

How is it not a benefit? Hobart is use to playing the puck low off the glass where other teams are use to having normal college height glass. A simple dump in around the boards caused the puck to fly up into the netting.

Turnovers? When a defensmen has a clear out and passes it DIRECTLY to the Oswego forwards stick on the blue line at least 3 times in a game, that is NOT the ice. We are not talking about a pressure forecheck, the defenemen just simply couldn't make the pass out. I've skated several times on the ice and its one of the worse, Cortland is close #2. Seeing how Hobart plays on it, practices on it, and therefore is use to it, its an advantage...its not "silly" its the truth.

Im not saying Hobart isn't a top maybe 12-15 team, they are. Oswego played a typical Plattsburgh type game against inferior opponents. Get a goal and let them hang around and Hobart finally started putting pressure on late in the game. The team that showed up the last 2 minutes of the third period is a Top 5 to Top 10 team. The team that started the game was a Top 15ish team. They will not beat teams with talent, they will beat teams with hard work.

What is the "visual test"? Is that a different way to say "in my opinion"? ;)

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

How is it absurd? I can't say what I did and how I arrived at my thought. Calm down there killer.

Thinking that counting down the seconds in your head is proof the goal should not have counted is indeed the most absurd thing I ever heard.

Are you the greatest journalist in the world, no. That being said no one is perfect or above the rest and that has always been my view and I'm sticking with it. I know I'm not perfect in my trade and anyone in my field who says they are...well they are lying :)

Well, you totally missed my point. But that's not surprising.

Re: 12/8/12 - Will Cooler Heads prevail? Opportunity @ Mars. SCORES! RANTS! Overrat

No its the difference of actually seeing teams not just going by a scoresheet let alone a scoreboard....

Or counting seconds down in your head thinking that supercedes the official clock. :D

I can't believe Remy has been the most reasonable poster on this thread over any Oswego fan. The world truly is coming to an end on the 21st...
