12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

I thought it was spot on. Castleton needs this win. Norwich wants to win to put a team behind them in the loss column. I mean, let's be honest, does anyone really think that the "Battle of VT" is NU v. Castleton? I sure don't. It's NU v. Midd. "The Game," "Battle of VT," whatever you call it doesn't matter. It's NU v. Midd. Castleton has a long, long, long way to go to be considered on par with the other two.

It seems like this is turning into a generation thing. Certainly the older alums and players from the past will remember all the great battles with Middlebury but it was interesting talking to a current player yesterday that the mindset in the locker room was the players really are amped to play Castleton and don't talk about Middlebury as much currently.

With Middlebury no longer counting as a league game and Castleton now happening atleast twice a year will the tides change or atleast start to inch a rivalry with Castleton toward the same or near the same level as Middlebury?

Lately Castleton owns a decent record against Norwich while the Panthers have struggled against Norwich in recent years.

Another factor in this will be fan bases...the Castleton fan base is certainly jacked up about playing Norwich and there were a lot of Spartan fans at the NU game last year and the ECAC East final four game. Middlebury had less fans than Castleton at the games last year at Kreitzberg. I'll be intrigued to go down to Neyon next season and witness my first Norwich/Middlebury game at Kenyon Arena with the students in session to relate the atmospheres.

This could definitely happen, but Castleton will have to win when it counts first. If Castleton ends up beating Norwich for a couple of league championships in the next few years, then obviously the rivalry will take off.

Norwich/Middlebury YES

Norwich/Castleton. No

Norwich/Plattsburgh No

I see your P. O. V. regarding Plattsburgh, but you have to at least agree that from a fan's perspective NU/Platty is closer to a genuine rivalry than NU/Castleton.

Is it a rivalry now? Maybe, maybe not. Oswego will always be the #1 rivalry for Plattsburgh, much like Midd will always be for 'Wick. That said, it certainly has all the ingredients for a legitimate rivalry, and to an extent there is a bit of a flame to start heating it up (you saw Plattsburgh players in the PR talking about that sour taste in their mouths for what happened the year before). At this point, I think Plattsburgh wants to defeat Norwich just because they're Norwich. We're probably not far from it being a true rivalry.

I agree with you, I'd call it a rivalry. I understand Charlie's point of view, but it is a second rivalry, not the primary rivalry. Dartmouth is a "second rival" for Harvard (after Yale), Michigan State is a "second rival" for Michigan (after Ohio State), and Kansas State is a "second rival" for Kansas (after Missouri).

Wikipedia Duck test:

"If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck."

As far as I can determine the Plattsburgh and Castleton games with Norwich sure looks like a rivalry using the Duck test.

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

But if it weighs as much as a duck, is it a witch?

Agreed. Plus, shifting the focus from the players to the fanbase, the NCAA thing extends beyond last season: despite playing more evenly in the regular season, Plattsburgh's been bounced the last three times they've faced Norwich in the tourney, including twice at Stafford. There's a lot of "did it have to be against these guys again" sentiment building up.

Having an issue with the NSN page... when I get to the Norwich Page, it pops up an option window with the option of Student, Parent, Alumni, and Other. No matter what I click, I get redirected to the UVM page...?

Not sure why but I had some problems with web cast but wanted to ask you all who watched, Harris had been out of the line up until now, never did find out why he was MIA but do you think he was a factor in the game. He did not score I noticed

I never noticed Harris out there. Gotta be hard to try and join a team that was clicking pretty well in nine straight games.

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

What did people think? I'm glad the Cadets won, but I thought it was a pretty sloppy game to watch.

It certainly wasn't beautiful hockey. Castleton did a nice job regrouping after going down 3-0. They stay out of the box early and Norwich probably doesn't win.

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

The third period was really fun to see. I've seen some complaints about the officiating, but good or bad, the officiating was consistant, which IMO is all you could ask for.

It's pretty evident to me that Castleton has a really special team. I was only able to catch the third period, and they were moving with a purpose - unfortunately for them, they couldn't walk out of there with a win, but they definitely convinced me that they are a force to be reckoned with this year.

The Castleton goalie, Erick Cinotti, made the best save I have seen all year long on NU's Kyle Thomas. I think it was midway through the period. It wasn't one of those "look what I found" saves, it was a total robbery. Thomas couldn't believe it, what a stop. Reminds me of the stop Kyle Jones made on Nikita Kashirsky in the final four back in 2008 or so.

Every kid out there played hard, and they put everything they had out on the ice. Everybody should circle the Feb. 11th game on their schedules and catch that game!

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

Beside the Kyle Thomas save I also recall Cinotti had a outstanding save on a shot by Travis Janke I believe was in the third. If Cinotti continues to play at the same skill level Castleton will be very difficult to beat the rest of the way. With the Spartans rough play it will be very interesting to see how they compete in there two games with Plattsburgh. Plattsburgh has handled Castleton without trouble in the past but this Spartans team is playing good hockey.

The save on Thomas was with around 3 minutes to go. And agree absolute robbery by cinotti.

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

To Compliment Cinotti's awesome save against Thomas Thomas also made a couple of nice moves to get around the Spartan defenders to even get that shot off.
