12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

I am wondering if Josh Harris is going to be available for the Friday game. Last year he had 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points which is a lot of production in a 26 or 27 game schedule. He was Castleton's top scorer. You got to believe if he plays he could be a factor in the game.

I still believe the game will be a tight checking defensive game with not many goals scored. If the students are back there would be a very large crowd in attendance. Game could help both the Cadets and Spartans get ready for there Plattsburgh games on each teams schedule over the next month.

Harris is excepted to play. The question will be, who does he play with? My gut says Alonzo and Bell/frost/murray. I'm about 95% sure he will be with Alonzo seeing as they played all last year together with Stefan on that stud line, with Harris as the leading scorer in the nation, Stefan at number 7 and Alonzo at number 16. Fast forward to this year, and so far you have 5 CSC players in the top 20 in scoring(Lazorko 2, Bell 4, Wieland 10, Murray/Alonzo 17)...all without Harris. Castleton has depth because not a single one of those players, including Harris, is a Senior.

Now does this mean with Harris they will crush Norwich by scoring 10 goals plus in a rout...no. I just think they are dangerous team that a lot of people don't give enough credit to. I know a lot of posters, bloggers, and even voters, don't think CSC deserves to be where they are. I'll be honest, I won't be sure CSC deserves that spot until they prove it against the best team in the country tomorrow. Not getting manhandled like Elmira and Plattsburgh did will be what I'm looking for at the very least :).

I wasn't able to see all of Saturday's Elmira game, so I cannot comment on that. Norwich won the game by taking advantage of their opportunites but Plattsburgh was not "manhandled" by Norwich.

Norwich outshot both teams, and from my standpoint I didn't see Plattsburgh doing anything special. Elmira scored two goals in the first but was outshot 18-3 in that period did nothing the rest of the way. Norwich was 6-6 shorthanded, and 3-8 on the PP. I would have thought both teams would have put up bigger fights. Especially since Norwich is playing without some players due to injury correct? When you get shutout or lose by 3 goals in a championship game vs the number 1 team in the country, that's not exactly staying on par with them. That's not to say both those teams aren't great teams, cause they are, but in those games, Norwich was clearly better. Let's not forget that CSC lost 5-2 last year against Norwich in the second game and everyone was saying CSC got CRUSHED in that game.

I never said Norwich didn't carry some of the play (with Plattsburgh, and the first period against Elmira), I said they didn't manhandle them. In your opinion, winning by 3 (even stregth, a SHG, and an ENG), constitues that. Ok, that is your opinion. I just saw it as a more even game.

IMO, the game was much closer than the score indicated, especially with an ENG. Elmira's downfall were the bad penalties taken in the first period, including a 3 on 5, which resulted in the lopsided shot ratio and 3 goals against. Both of Elmira's goals were 5 on 5. They outshot Norwich 8/4 in the second and 13/7 in the third, but were unsuccessful on the PP.

Against Plattsburgh, goal #3 was ENG with 1 second left. The other two goals were because of offensive turnovers and Norwich took advantage> Thats what GOOD teams do! Plattsburgh needs to find some offense and how to finish. They did play pretty even only getting outshot by six shots (18-12) I wouldn't say either team was very offensivly minded in that game. The defences of both teams were predominant!

they have scored a lot of pts against some questionable teams at best.....yes they have talent but here come the Cadets:eek: dont think they will lay on a 10-0 beatdown like Becker{ thought becker was a band ??? }....should be a great game....

I watched both the Plattsburgh and Elmira games and what I observed were two very competitive D3 games by top quality teams. These games are the type of games you usually see when Norwich/Plattsburgh/Middlebury play each other. Sure Norwich did enough to win and you could make a case that Plattsburgh and Elmira outstanding goaltending was a factor in keeping the score down. Norwich/Castleton should be another competitive game.

Manhandled? Anything special? Plattsburgh had more odd man rushes then most games with such little offensive outbursts, but couldnt convert. They also missed open nets and or hit the post probably 3 or 4 times. And I will say it again, holding Norwich to just 18 shots on goal is a pretty big accomplishment. Plattsburgh was in that game late into the third period getting several scoring chances once the team decided to open things up.

CSC DID get crushed by Norwich last year. When you're outshot by over 20 shots and a 2-to-1 margin...and its 4-0 before people get settled in their seats, its getting crushed. Time of possesion in that game last year was heavily tilted towards Norwich.

I dont know what bigger fight you expected. One wouldnt expect to see a top 3 team have issues with Morrisville either...

Norwich wins this game by 3..outshooting Castleton by 15+.....

Can you ask him if he's attending the game? Or will he be at UVM? ;)

We haven't heard anything back from the BFP.

99% of me agrees with this. As I've said before, I've never really been that impressed with Castleton.

However, there is one thing that Norwich has to deal with tonight, and that is the large home crowd. Including the exhibitions, the team has been playing for over a month, but they haven't played in front of an electric building yet, either at home or in the Primelink. The students weren't there against NEC and St. A's, and the crowd was pretty sparse and quiet for those games. Likewise, I was very disappointed with the fan showing at MIDD for the tourney. So, first huge crowd of the season against a team that your battling for the top spot in the league with. Don't get me wrong, this could turn into a huge positive for Norwich, but it could also be a big distraction. Sometimes, when you haven't played in front of a lively crowd in a while (ever in the case of the freshmen), you try to do too much. Players will look for untimely big hits, or they may hold the puck too long.

Let's hope that's not the case and the crowd propels NU to the win. I just wanted to bring up another talking point.

Re: 12/2 Best of VT/Nation Norwich vs. Castleton

Interesting read by Dr. Wiitalla of d3hockey.com on the Castleton/Norwich "rivalry"

http://www.d3hockey.com/notables/2011/Stories/111201-when-is-a-rivalry-a-rivalry

Anyone with thoughts?

I thought it was spot on. Castleton needs this win. Norwich wants to win to put a team behind them in the loss column. I mean, let's be honest, does anyone really think that the "Battle of VT" is NU v. Castleton? I sure don't. It's NU v. Midd. "The Game," "Battle of VT," whatever you call it doesn't matter. It's NU v. Midd. Castleton has a long, long, long way to go to be considered on par with the other two.
