12/10 USCHO Poll

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

You know, you were close. The NCAA All Time Tournament Appearances....

1. Plattsburgh
2. Middlebury
2. St.Thomas
4. St.Norbert
4. Norwich
4. Elmira
7. Oswego

still no Utica......

I’m hoping you realize that my post was in jest...just trying to “bust your chops”.:p In case there is grey area, here are a few things to note:

• I am not a Utica fan - I am a Hobart fan (and former player)
• I was not trying to list the programs with the most NCAA tournament appearances…I was just poking fun at some of your previous posts that seem to focus on these five programs as the only ones "worthy" of respect
• While I get that often times “success breeds success”, I do not believe a program’s previous history should factor into how that team is evaluated against the current competitive landscape. Every team gets a clean slate at the start of every season…

1. I don't think he was specifically saying the Utica comment because he thought you were a UC fan, but as a poke at the whole conversation that has been going on for weeks about UC.

2. We all knew what you were doing, he turned around and posted the list on all-time NCAA appearances to poke fun at you for poking fun at him :p

3. Agreed. But, at the same time, we CAN use history to predict (with far from 100% accuracy) how teams will go from here. For example, a team that is consistently good in the first semester, but ALWAYS falls apart as the season winds down (a very common argument against UC) will probably not get as much respect as a team that is consistently there at the end no matter how they start the season until they prove they can keep it together or the other team turns absolutely abysmal.

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

Yes, I realize it was in jest, as I hope you saw mine was as well seeing how there hasn’t been a poll during this time period for as long as I can remember. Normally the first poll doesn’t show up till the Monday after the new year.

1. Yes I know you’re not a Utica fan.
2. I know you were not trying to list the programs, I knew exactly what you were trying to do, I was simply pointing out that those schools have all earned their place among the elite. When two teams are matched up, winning or losing, voters have always tended to go with the more perennial power.
3. I never said anyone wasn’t “worthy” of respect in the sense they shouldn’t be congratulated for having a decent record, but that’s not what polls are based off of. Polls are, or should be, based on the best teams. Getting a win (in the case of Utica) does not guarantee you a jump over that team. Nor is having a great record (see old Adrian threads). You don’t like the fact I’ve seen Hobart a couple times and do not feel they are a Top 3 team, oh well. I go to as many DIII hockey games and as many DIFFERENT teams as I can every year, and if I can’t my TV has on average 5-6 different games on it. I also don’t come on and say “Team A beat Team B so team A is the better team”, you as a former player should know that’s not how things roll, thank god. And yes, some of us get a kick out of the hissy fits some people have when their team *start jumping up and down stomping your feet* isn’t getting the respect they feel they should be getting. Continue to win some games in March when it matters, or heck just continue to show up in March and maybe people will take notice.
4. I do agree in part that teams should not be “graded” on past success, sure, and while every year is new, having success year after year for decades is a little different then a few good years. Oswego has shown when push comes to shove, (except in the SUNYAC tournament) they will normally be there at the end. Utica has yet to set foot during the NCAA’s. I think Plattsburgh has had 1 year below .600 in the past 30 years or so and only 2 losing seasons, ever. Yes, Utica COULD make it in, and Norwich, Oswego, Plattsburgh, and SNC COULD NOT make it in. There are reasons those schools continue to be in the NCAA tournament and reasons why teams like Utica are not. Teams should be graded on the talent they have on the ice, of which I have no seen from Hobart. As I said before, there is a reason why people are upset Northern Illinois is playing in a BCS football game. Just because you have a good record doesn’t mean you’re the best or one of the best teams on the ice.

You should jump over to the d3.com football boards during the season....Humor is not one of the finer points!

Happy Holidays to all!

I've thought of checking out some D3 football. Don't have a clue who the good teams are by any means. Hows this hockey related? I was listening to a local AM radio station as they were discussing how one of the co-hosts went to see a D3 football game (I want to say Hobart vs. someone). It was his first D3 football game and he talked about how watered down and "a shade better then high school football" it was. So it was then brought up about Cornell hockey vs DIII hockey and how DIII would "get blown off the pond". I sent the radio show a letter explaining maybe they should do some research before making such bold comments, of course these are the same radio shows that think RIT hockey is the next Boston College....needless to say...stick to what you know and expand on those you don't know. I've heard horror stories about that board tho....

For what it is worth, I may not always agree with your opinion but there is no lack of respect (or ill-will) coming from my end....just enjoying the back and forth. I hope you and yours have a healthy, happy holiday season...

D3 Football is more than a shade over hs ball similar to d3 hockey. The talent pool is insane. The complexity and the speed of the game alone (in both sports) is amazing.. Any talk show hack that talks smack like that never laced em up..That I will tell you!

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

I watch alot of D 1 hockey and to me the "main" difference is the passing is so much better. Next is the speed of the game.

I would agree with this statement.

I think also the combination of speed and size is a bit greater at the D1 level. I think there are a lot of 6'0 or taller D-I forwards that can move as fast as the 5'8-5'9 guys in D-III with the complete skill set to compliment that. Two things you can't teach are size and speed.

Except of course Mr. Musselwhite! (Insert YouTube video)

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

The top DIII programs could compete right now in certain conferences. I think the main difference would be the 3rd and 4th lines at the DI level are all-around more skilled. I know the DI transfers who have come to Plattsburgh have helped out for the most part, but by no means dominated with the possible exception of current goalie Mathieu Cadieux.

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

I read these forums all the time but I had to jump in on this talk, as a former DIII player with a DI brother, I and every college coach I know breaks the difference between DI and DIII down in one word...."execution". Whether it be a pass, a shot, even a chip of the glass. DI players execute on a more consistent basis.

Correct and physical attributes play into that sometimes. ;)
