12/10 USCHO Poll

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

USC: Airline tickets, loans, hotel rooms, 96 Chevy Impala ($19,000), free rent in Spring Valley 2hours+ south of USC, and over $30,000 added mostly into banks accounts.....that was just football

Basketball: OJ Mayo violations

Tennis: $7,000 school credit card given to a player to make long distance phone calls.

Far cry from a few meals....it was also the BCS who took their Championship away, not the NCAA. If you go back the AP Poll still recognizes USC as National Champions.

As I said before, if "intended" when 98% of your "grants" are going to athletes isn't obvious I dont know what is. Majority of the time the schools were all warned and told to pay attention and they still did it.

One more time, because you keep missing this point. Whether you agree with the NCAA's determination of what is intended or not was not my point. My point is once the NCAA decides something is intended, whether that was the proper decision or not, then the NCAA comes down on you hard. That's why Plattsburgh got hit as hard as they did. Whether they should or shouldn't was not the point I was making.

And I don't think the NCAA cares, to a point (see SMU), how much you give a student athlete (I didn't even know about the USC tennis player situation, and I forgot about OJ Mayo which was something that should have gotten USC hit even harder). Once you improperly give something to an athlete, especially freebies, and if the NCAA determines it was intentional, at that point the NCAA will come down on you hard. And, Plattsburgh was giving their players a heck of a lot more than you ever make it appear, like free rent, which you keep conveniently leave out.

USC may have only gotten two years, but they lost a ton of money not being able to get any Bowl payouts in those two years.

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

I remember taking a run at somebody in the 3rd period (vs. Potsdam) to "shift the momentum" as it were. All it got was 2 minutes and another Potsdam PPG. The aforementioned Strack was not on his game obviously. One funny thing that came out of it though was in between periods Herb was trying to fire us up by kicking the big trash can in the middle of the locker room.....only to find it had been bolted to the floor !!! The sight of him hobbling off was priceless and we joked about for years! It was one of the last things I talked to him about before he passed away a couple of years ago.

Some of the other great teams back in those days were Merrimack, Elmira, Bemidji, Mankato and Army.

As far as tge scandal of '85-87 in Plattsburgh. I knew all the players, the host families and college admin people involved. It was run like a pro team. Nobody knew anything about NCAA rules ...or cared. We just brought in the best players we could. Most of them were not from wealthy families and would have otherwise not played college hockey. I don't think there was intentional disregard for rules. I remember going on a D1 recruiting trip and being told by the players what benefits were afforded. I think nothing would've been done had we not won the whole thing. What's really ironic is the two coaches who whined the loudest were doing the same thing in one way or another.
There is a growing interest in having the NCAA revisit the whole thing and removing the * someday.

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

It's like holding in the NFL. You can call it on every play if you wan't to. The NCAA could find something wrong with every team if they really wanted to. Especially back then. C'mon Bakdraft, let's hear how squeaky clean Donnie Unger's program was.

Re: 12/10 USCHO Poll

Let me see....YES, we count 3 NCAA titles because we won all of them on the ice where it counts. The # will be changed someday soon I have a feeling. Yes, I remember vaguely a goalie named Bielby. Wasn't he from Rome, NY ?? I think Herb brought him in to back up Rick Strack, which was gonna mean about 45 minutes all year !!

Yes, I played on the team that beat Clarkson 3-2 AT Clarkson !! It was our first game under Herb Hammond and although I would like to say we dominated play, it was quite the contrary. I think we caught them way off guard. Clarkson was absolutely loaded. In subsequent games with them, and other D1 teams, we always got their "A" game. But , during that year of '80-81, we swept through Clarkson, UVM, Colgate, RPI and St Lawrence without losing.

There is only 4 days left for it to be changed.
