119th congress: must be at least 75 to chair a committee!

Waaaaaiiit. So I saw this discussed in brief on social media yesterday, but I didn't see an explainer on it and with everything else I forgot about it.

But then this TikTok appeared on my FYP.

Congresses job regarding these tariffs, if applied during a state of emergency (as these were), is to vote to end the emergency, and thus end the tariffs. Per the laws on the books, it requires a committee consideration after 15 calendar days, and then three days for a floor vote.

One of the poison pills placed into the "clean resolution" spending bill was an amendment stating that the remainder of the 119th Congress sessiom shall count as *one* calendar day since the Executive Order Emergency Act enacting the tariffs.

They want to prevent the next Democrat that gets elected from doing what Trump is doing. However, what they don't realize is Trump is never leaving, and the Republicans are never giving up power.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona has died. One of the good ones. Why can’t any shitty Republicans die?
He should have never run in 2024. It's absolutely fucked up priorities to run when you have cancer, your future is uncertain, and won't be able to fulfill your duties to your constituents and country while in office.

I'm sorry but this whole idea that deathbed politicians can continue to run and sit in office needs to change.

Did I miss something? I thought laws were out of fashion

I don’t necessarily disagree with anything you said. He said he wasn’t running in 2026. Probably guessed he could make it. Like RBG, he guessed wrong. It just sucks to lose a progressive icon, is all. Dude was someone even Kepler could be proud of…I think.

Yep. Stupid dead man, just like Margary today called Feinstein “stupid, dead Diane Feinstein”

Fire them all into the sun

I don't think Schumer survives this. The blowback is immense and widespread.

It's not entirely clear cloture is going to happen tomorrow after watching this reaction. I can only imagine other senators wondering about primaries in 2026.

If cloture fails, I think he'd be forced to step down.
