Conservatives are criminals. This is not a surprise.

All their fear is projection that they think everybody else is like them: violent and grifting. They fulminate against their own guilt.

These are the tools we invented religion to control with threats of eternal hellfire. It's too bad they stopped believing in it. I wish the Philosophes had kept it in Latin for the high brows. The rest don't really need to know the truth, and it's dangerous when the Right starts thinking there's no cops to stop their natural inclinations.

What's the dirt on Augustine? All I can remember from reading Augustine is that he sounded like a self-righteous blowhard on the page, but I didn't learn anything about his objectionable predilections.
 
This is why you don't attack the DOJ when they are investigating you and your friends. No one is surprised Gaetz is dirty and skeevy...but if you just keep your mouth shut 99% of it stays hidden and you can just brush off the rest. Once you start down the path of "Its all a conspiracy against me" you need friends to try and cover for you. Well most of his party hates him because he actively has been trying to overthrow leadership and he threw the DOJ under 2 different Presidents (from differing Parties) under the bus. Every piece of dirt the DOJ has is gonna leak out between now and the Midterms and the GOP has zero interest in protecting him.

Put it this way...Kevin McCarthy defended MTG despite everything she does and says. Fought to keep her on committees and still whines about it. When it was suggested Gaetz should be taken off his committees because of possible conflict of interest due to the investigation McCarthy basically said "if you can prove we won't stop you". (he was more diplomatic) Trump has basically disavowed him as well...Gaetz is on an island with Gym Jordan (who soon will "look the other way" as we all know he is wont to do) and a guy who just cut a deal who is Gaetz's accomplice.

Basically, he lived very hedonistically as a young man, then converted to Christianity later on and told everyone not to do any of the things (kinky extramartial sex, heavy drinking, dabbling in other faiths) he had done. He also left a long-time lover to prepare to marry a preteen girl for her money, but then decided to become a priest before the marriage happened.

  4. Jesus does his thing, with or without the third day (season to taste). Paul wins the succession struggle. Jesus : Paul :: Lenin : Stalin. Christianity starts to get nasty.
  5. Here comes Augustine. Another jerk. After half a life as an irresponsible playboy he fucks over the woman who loves him, crawls home to an overbearing and shrill fanatical mother, and then spits out tomes demonizing women and setting Christianity on the road to misogyny for the next 1500 years.
  6. The monastic orders house Volcels who spend their time lusting after the women they can’t have and tweeting about how all women are whores out of spite. There is the occasional Good Guy among them but he either keeps his head down or gets murdered by the Episco-PO-lice.
  7. Holy Mother Church monetizes the operation and the Petrine mafia runs an extractive commercial empire like the US. We use missiles, Rome uses missals (get it?!, nyuck nyuck).
  8. Luther and Calvin show up, call BS on the money part but lean into the women and sex hating again because monks are bent in the head.
  9. Post-Enlightenment, sane people either give it all up as a terrible detour or vaguely embody Jesus' original good ideas while ignoring all the reactionary or commercial idiocy. The authoritarians double down on the viciousness and are DTF where F stands for murder. Christendom splits into thirds: intellectuals who've seen enough; kind average people who ignore the BS and stress the good lessons; and sociopath wolves leading cretinous sheep to the slaughter.
