Guess what, it makes republicans like him even more!

why are women even in the military? And how dare one report a sexual assault. Was her uniform too tight?

All Mitch cares about is protecting Rich People. And he's going to win again.

From Elizabeth Warren's Facebook.

Mitch McConnell isn't obsessed with just a "shield." The proposal he's pushing would roll back civil rights, workers’ rights, and disability protections – which would harm people for years to come. And he's using struggling families as a bargaining chip.

As proof, look no further than McConnell’s battle to attach a “liability shield” to any stimulus package. He shares this priority with the Trump administration and other Senate Republicans, who have been pushing since the summer for federal liability shields that would restrict COVID-19 related lawsuits. The White House’s proposed $916 billion rescue package includes what Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin has called “robust” protections “for businesses, schools, and universities.” Industry groups say that without immunity from liability, they’ll face excessive litigation. Various Republican senators have suggested different routes to the same goal. McConnell’s shield would last until 2024, but a proposal from Senator Mitt Romney would only cover 2020. There’s some bipartisan support for “a six-month moratorium” on the lawsuits, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

You can see right there that Democrats have moved and have been willing to write off 6 months. I bet the whole 2020 thing could be a compromise, but I bet Turtle Boy won't go for that.

I thought I remember reading a post from a lawyer who has followed this pretty closely and he summed it up with "To date, there haven't been many lawsuits at all relative to what was expected" so this just seems like the GOP spending political capital on something that doesn't exist.

Knowing Turtle Boy his bill expands it beyond Covid and to other things. Giving free reign to our corporate overlords.

I kind of tend to agree with this.

I think in most states an employee would have a pretty tough time suing their employer for Covid. Usually the workers compensation laws provide the exclusive remedy. It's kind of the whole point behind workers compensation laws, to keep employers from getting sued all the time while at the same time getting employees medical bills and wage loss paid. And as I understand it, trying to make a work comp claim for a disease that you contract is pretty hard.

With respect to students suing Universities and the like, that would be a tough road, imho. First, I would guess that in a lot of states public institutions might have some possible immunity defenses. Second, there is simply the proof problem to demonstrate where you contracted the disease.

I think lawsuits arising out of things like firing someone who has covid, or not granting them required leave, etc..., are the more likely claims, but I'm not sure that's what McConnell is trying to avoid, and I expect most states have employment laws that might apply anyway.

Yeah unless you can prove you got the disease because of lax standards at work the chances of winning a lawsuit are pretty slim. You would have to be able to prove you did nothing that could have potentially put you at risk in the same time frame. The chances of that are highly unlikely.

I honestly think the GOP is being stupid here...they should have cut bait and run on this issue a long time ago. It is a nothingburger...

I think the meatpacking industry might have a few legit claims. Not sure about things like retail, etc.

Either way, it just seems like a waste of bargaining. It's not going to be a popular provision and if the Dems were smart (uuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhhh) they could easily brand the GOP with this and put pressure on them.

Same could be said for the Democrats, though - if there aren't any lawsuits anyway, why are they dying on this hill?

Seems like a case of Sayre's Law: "The politics are so fierce precisely because the stakes are so low."

I would love it if Pete Davidson took back his apology and railed on him again. I don't really like Pete Davidson at all but I feel he got screwed with his apology and he should have free reign to rake him over the coals.

Yeah his original bit wasn't even remotely what people made it out to be.

Davidson's apology was really to disabled vets, not the Pandering Pirate.

Except that everyone knows the GOP doesn't care about people...the Dems try and pretend they want to do what is best for everyone.
