115th Congress. In Bridge, Can Hearts be Trumped? In Spades!

Re: 115th Congress. In Bridge, Can Hearts be Trumped? In Spades!

Nunes stepped aside today on the House investigation of Russia. Wonder why? Pressure aside the Repubs are in full control.

If he was smart he did it so he wouldnt be Michael Flynn Part Deux. Trump wasnt even hiding that they set him up to be the next fall guy.

Be honest. Harry/Chuck would have pulled the trigger given the exact same circumstances.

I really don't blame either side for the way this turned out. This is on the electorate. They let the GOP get away with highway robbery--they made this happen.

You missed my point. If it was HRC as president and a Dem Senate, Chuck would have gone nuclear to stop Mitch's fillibuster.

We need to reset the political process.

I think what happened to Garland and the "reasoning" offered was the big ratchet up. I would expect you to differ.

Be honest, they would not have pulled the chickenshiat tactics McConnell and Grassley pulled with Garland.

There should have been hearings and a vote up or down. To the Victor goes the spoils. It's not like the other sitting justices are going to live forever..

Sure they would have. Given the level of partisanship in the Congress, any appointment made by a lame duck president in the final year of his term was DOA if the Senate is held by the opposite party.

Now, I would have done it differently than Moronic Mitch. I would have dragged out the confirmation process and then instructed some lackey in a safe seat up for election in 2022 to fillibuster the nomination until the adjournment.

Garland was the sacrificial lamb in a political war that is going to get much more ugly before it gets better.

Right now we can expect that if Chuck becomes majority leader in 2020, any SCOTUS appointment made by tD is DOA.

Notorious better start drinking tana leaf tea.

This is the problem in a nutshell. I have no doubt you believe this, but what the GOP did with Garland was over the line and ridiculous. However, a partisan but sincere fellow like you is unable to see that it was categorically different from the other games that have always been played. And that can extend to anything. Say Trump doesn't like Court rulings and decides to create 2 new justices. You will believe that a Dem would just have done the same thing.

(1) My side can't do anything bad relative to the other side
(2) My side did x
(3) Therefore, the other side would have at least done x if not worse

Once you accept (1) no amount of empirical evidence can ever disprove it. That's no longer reasoning. It's faith.

BSABSVR is easily the biggest thing today that is destroying the country. Until people start to wake up to the fact there is a difference, nothing will change.

True. But 53% of white women don't think there's any difference. So, not much hope.

We get it, we get it, Jesus...

Well, if you think being more positive and constructive will help, I'm all for it. But, every single day Trump is driving us further and further into the sewer while at the same time we ALL KNOW that if Hillary we're in office we'd have impeachment proceedings already.

The double standard is insane. And the fact that over 50% of this country doesn't think the double standard exists is pure insanity.

Re: 115th Congress. In Bridge, Can Hearts be Trumped? In Spades!

This is brilliant because it has the numbers to back up my intuition that ultimately the filibuster was used by conservatives to freeze out reform and maintain the status quo for the Haves.

In the long run, anti-Democratic measures unsurprisingly benefit the forces of reaction. All things being left alone, the Haves will constantly build strength, crowd the Have Nots out of power, and then work to give their de facto plutocracy a de jure basis. This is the Mission Statement of all conservative political institutions throughout history: transfer power up the status pyramid (while decrying all counter-measures as, guffaw, "class warfare.")

More democracy is, again in the long run, better for more people in a democratic republic. It is a brake on the momentum which is always making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Kepler - As you well remember FDR tried to add more justices to get his programs approved. It was shot down rather spectacularly and it is universally recognized as not his finest hour.

tD would suffer the same fate.

Of course it is, but your Mister Jaded Eeyore act helps nobody. The answer to the right's braindeadness is not to b-tch, it's to outvote the right. There are way, way more of us than them. We just need to give our people a reason to get off the couch and get involved. Watered-down GOP Lite candidates don't do that, no kidding. We need more Democrats to come from the Democratic wing of the party. All you're doing is perpetuating Rover's ridiculous narrative where when people don't eat a sh-t sandwich you blame the people.

LOL

I admire your optimism about people but I don't share it. I see my own state going down the tubes despite good Democratic candidates and overwhelming data to support them. The voters who voted the way they did this cycle are intractable and the voters that sat on the couch are petulant whiny crybabies who flushed the country down the toilet cause they (Susan Sarandon) didn't get their way.

There's no magic fix for this. You keep saying they're going away but somehow they always come back. Now we're back to Neocon war, something that was completely dead this election. cycle.

Please don't say "remember" as if I was there. I'm not that old. :p

I contend that the right is now so unhinged and so insulated from reality they would be able to justify any act by an (R) and demonize any act by a (D). That is what is wrong with the country at this moment. Hemlines rise and fall, with first one party then the other being too extreme, but what we are in now is a long period of conservative radicalism that is so evangelical it is practically violent, and this corresponds to a period where partisanship is so all-encompassing that their base will go along with anything. It's the party analogy to Trump's statement about shooting somebody on Fifth Avenue.
