Reputation Rehab 101: call yourself an addict of something. You get to play the victim, your subsequent story can be played up as redemption, and you get to strike all your past behavior as "that wasn't me, it was my addiction."

People are kind; they will forgive somebody with demons. And the alternative would be to admit you're just an unethical creep who made their political staff run personal errands, which is against House rules.

Having wifey with the baby on camera is a nice touch, too.

Same guy. There was a rumor that he was going to retire last week, then he called an incoherent press conference where we can now speculate that he was drunk at, and finally to yesterday when he called it quits.

Isn't Cruz an attorney and a Constitution lover? Why dodge the question? It's one of the most interesting questions in our Democracy.

Should't the question be, "Why is the President interested in pardoning himself?"?

Probably. It should be one of those legal questions that is argued over and over again but never has to be answered because it's never brought before the Courts. Unfortunately President ****tard may cause the burning legal question to be answered once and for all.

It's actually not a bad idea to resolve it.

I honestly hope the consequence of this is to eliminate the pardon power completely. It's such an obvious invitation to corruption for everyone. That comes into relief with a sleazeball like Dumpy, but it's not a power I want to give anybody.

About the most I would agree to is an executive pardon has to pass the entire legislature unanimously.

The pardon power is part of the checks and balances. I vehemently disagree with its outright abolition.

I'm with you. The founders could never know that the House and Senate would completely abscond from their "check" responsibilities to a President. It is the flaw in the system.

It's an overpowered character in a video game. If you want to keep it, dilute it. No more political pardons. That way lies Dumpy Madness.

Also: it wouldn't be the worst thing to put some limits on the Imperial Presidency. We've been drifting towards far too much concentration of power under the Executive branch for a hundred years. Modern trends are towards the emasculation of the Legislature, both by its own cowardice and by the mission creep of the President. We may need a set of amendments to reverse that trend, just as the Progressive amendments were a first, now insufficient, attempt to safeguard democracy against the power of the rich, or those Justice John Paul Stevens proposed try to remedy some of the worst problems of the current era.

Was it ever truly abused to such an abhorrently significant degree as it has under Tchump? As you said (in a different way) once the adults return to the podium the stench from the orcs will lessen.

McConnell is canceling the August recess. Conveniently 24 Democrats are up for reelection and the recess is generally used to campaign.
