#1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

Wasn't just that, chief. You'd think fans of an 8th place team would simply focus on supporting THEIR team.
Hmmm... I was unaware that the standings dictated what fans could and could not say. Pray tell, what place must a team be in to both support their team with chants like "Let's Go UMass" and mock the other team by saying things like "Green line"?

You won't see any BC hockey fan leaving with this team down a goal. And please, while there were only around 3,300 fans, to say the UMass fans were louder is stupid.
Really? I won't see any BC fan leave if this team is down a goal? Under any circumstances? I find that hard to believe.

Also, I never said UMass fans were louder. I believe a BC fan said that in the BC season thread, so if you want, you are more than welcome to take that up with them.

What I said was "I thought the UMass fans were great for the most part." Why do I think this? Well, because as far as I know, there was nothing chanted that was offensive or profane, yet you are still upset enough to come and whine on at least two different threads. They got to you in a pretty classy way.

I only say "they" because I didn't start or chant "Green Line" though I must admit I was amused the first time I heard it.

Enjoy the trip to the garden.

There were some UMass fans that walked into the BC student section and started chanting "Let's Go UMass" clearly in an attempt to start something. When spoken to by other BC fans, they were difficult to understand because they sounded like they were drunkenly slurring their words. After some back and forth banter between these UMass guys and some of the BC students, the UMass fans got escorted out of the section by security. They didn't say anything profane, which surprised me. I guess they save that for the Mullins Center.

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

I'm sorry if that upset you.

However, I still think you guys are grasping at straws here with this "UMass fans are terrible" thing here. I don't think this is a UMass specific thing. I've seen visiting fans come to the student section of the Mullins Center plenty of times and I'm pretty sure I saw the same thing at the first round of the Bean Pot.

If this is the worst you've got, I stand by my "UMass fans were great for the most part" comment.

Congrats on thinking that, but no they weren't. They stood up at the top of Conte Forum, chanted for their team maybe once or twice a period. Then said a bunch of stupid ****. Far from "great."

Anyway, you can talk about your fans all you want. Your team was bad and they are no longer playing anymore that is really all the matters.

I didn't let it bother me because I knew that was what the UMass kids were trying to do, get under our skin. I was just stating what happened. It was fun getting in the back and forth with them for a little bit anyway. UMass fans were fine this weekend. "Great" might be grasping at straws, unless you mean great for UMass standards, then I would agree with you there.
I've been to all Hockey East arenas with the exception of UVM and I can honestly say UMass fans (well the students anyway) were definitely the worst. ******* BC chants and students that appeared to have no idea what was going on. There was a girl who got kicked out for throwing a sandwich onto the ice during one of the intermissions. Saw another guy get kicked out by security for flipping off our section of BC students for a solid 3 minutes. Not to mention multiple UMass fans (could've been students, seemed to be in their 20's at least) came up to our section telling us how much they hated BC and challenging us to fights. I've never seen that many bad things happen at one sporting event, and I've been to Red Sox-Yankees a couple of times and countless BU-BC games at Agganis, Conte, the Garden, and even the game at Fenway. BU fans seem polite and tame compared to some of the UMass fans. I'll try not to make too many generalizations though, as you seem to be a rational UMass fan here on this thread...too bad there can't be more of you!

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

They got to you in a pretty classy way.

If you call their behavior classy then you're dumber than I thought. And I already had very low expectations for you in that regard.

The UMass fans behind the net last night were retarded and were an absolute embarrassment. Were you the guy in the hard hat with the UMass logo on it that kept drooling down your chin all night?

For the record, I'm not the one who brought up the fans. I was responding to complaints of BC fans, who were offended for reasons beyond my understanding. So far, no one has been able to point out anything UMass fans did that was worthy of the criticism they've received on this board. I'm sticking up for us. UMass fans as a whole kept it clean and upset BC fans enough to moan about them on at least two different threads.

Also, I was very appreciative of the "Thank You, Dainton" chant at the end of the game. Classy, I think. Furthermore, when exiting the rink, I was stopped by some current UMass students who told me they were waiting for the team by the bus to give them one last round of applause and invited me to join them. They stayed and cheered for every player as they boarded the bus. Again, classy, I believe.

Secondly, I might disagree with your "your team was bad" statement. It depends on what you mean. Do you mean "UMass was bad this season"? If so, I fully agree. If you mean "UMass was bad this series," then I disagree 100%.

Re-read this thread from before the games. A few posters said that there should be a running clock. All things considered, I thought UMass played quite well. You have every right to disagree.

I will miss the seniors, especially Paul Dainton. And I don't understand for the life of me why Toot didn't play Shawn Saunders more. Shrug.

One again, enjoy the Garden.

No, I'm sorry that wasn't me. I was standing in the last row of BB wearing a Triangle and a UMass baseball cap.

Nothing like a good, old-fashioned, "my fanbase is better than yours" argument on an anonymous internet message board.

I suppose "Great" was an overstatement. Good? Acceptable? I don't know. Perhaps the most accurate thing to say would have been "I thought UMass fans behaved in such a way that people would not have mentioned them on USCHO afterwards."

I've been to all Hockey East arenas with the exception of UVM and I can honestly say UMass fans (well the students anyway) were definitely the worst. ******* BC chants and students that appeared to have no idea what was going on. I have no problem with you complaining about this type of treatment. It's unacceptable. I'm sorry this happened. I'm happy to hear the Mullins Center staff dealt with the problem.

Nothing else to talk about now till football starts up again in September :)

No, I'm sorry that wasn't me. I was standing in the last row of BB wearing a Triangle and a UMass baseball cap.

You were wearing a capitalized Triangle? That must have been uncomfortable.

OK so you weren't anywhere near section D last night. That's all I needed to know. So why don't you just take it from some people sitting in section E that your fans down there were absurdly embarrassing and leave it at that.

At the end of the day, the well-travelled fans at every school in the league except UMass would say UMass fans are the worst. There's really no way to spin that. I'm not interested in arguing with you. You're happy with your fan behavior. We were embarrassed for the ones that you didn't see or hear. So... we'll leave it at that.

Enjoy the offseason.

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

A few points from a Lowell fan who was at the game on Saturday (supporting my friend who went to UMass):

1). Stop whining BC fans. If I'm not mistaken you were the same fans chanting "low, lower, lowest, Lowell a couple of months ago at Tsongas when you beat the worst Lowell team since 1968. Good for you

2). There were maybe 80 BC students at the game making no noise at all.

3). The UMass fans in the cheap seats were making noise and I didn't hear anything offensive from them all night.

4). The UMass fans behind the net at the Varsity Club end were clowns.

Obviously it doesn't dictate it in UMass fans' case, but it certainly should. Sorry, but fans of an 8th place team should know their role and simply support their team. The stuff I heard was flat out STUPID. If you want to get specific, the "NIT" chant was the worst of the worst. Did UMass make the NCAA tourney? Or even the NIT for that matter?

Really? I won't see any BC fan leave if this team is down a goal? Under any circumstances? I find that hard to believe.

I'll play along...give me a circumstance.

Also, I never said UMass fans were louder. I believe a BC fan said that in the BC season thread, so if you want, you are more than welcome to take that up with them.

Fine. UMass fans were great, but they were not louder than the BC faithful. We'll leave it at that. Not even sure what that last sentence means, but there was nothing classy about anything I heard. Congrats on no profane language though, I'm proud of you guys.

I only say "they" because I didn't start or chant "Green Line" though I must admit I was amused the first time I heard it.

You have a great sense of humor. I always laugh when I think of the T crashing into something.

*** are you talking about? I've already mentioned the stupid things I heard. If you think they were on point and funny, so be it.

1). Stop whining BC fans. If I'm not mistaken you were the same fans chanting "low, lower, lowest, Lowell a couple of months ago at Tsongas when you beat the worst Lowell team since 1968. Good for you

First of all, I simply mentioned the UMass fans I heard in section BB on Friday night. That's not all UMass fans. If you have a problem with a chant directed at Lowell, don't take it up with me. I don't chant anything at games. Although I don't quite see any comparison between the chant you're referencing and making jokes about an unfortunate T incident and then making jokes about the girl being allergic to alcohol.

You do realize the students were on break, right?

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

I am a student, and I was at the game. The UMass fans that came into our section before being escorted out were being pretty belligerent. One guy kept saying that BC was a joke and that he made 52K at an internship over the summer, and that he was going to be making 100K right after he graduated, and that everyone at BC would fail at life. The absurdity and stupidity of what the guy was saying really struck me, and I gladly led a few chants against them, such as "If you have a winning record clap your hands," and "Hooked on Phonics" after the kid kept slurring his words and reiterating that kids who graduate from BC wouldn't have real jobs like he would. While getting into a flame war won't solve much, it did seem that a lot of the UMass fans at Mullins and at Conte were just drunk and looking for trouble. How else can you explain why UMass fans flooded our seats (admittedly general admission but still) at Mullins and exhorting their friends to take all their seats from the "BC F A G G O T S" and or moving into the BC student section and Conte and just trying stupid stuff in general. I was disappointed by the low turnout of BC students at the game, but there is no way the UMass students were louder, unless you were sitting much closer to them.

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

So there were drunk and belligerent people at a hockey game?

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

Can we stop pretending that UMass' fan base is like every other one? There are drunk people at every hockey game, but if you can't see that UMass' fan base is the worst of the bunch, then I don't think this argument will ever be settled.

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

LOL at a couple UML fans racing to the defense of their state university brethren!!!

Re: #1 Boston College vs. #8 UMass-Amherst - HEA Quarterfinals

By only one goal? Not on your life. Heck, I figured the NU-BU game was over when the Huskies scored the 5th goal and were up by three... and then BU goes and scores two goals in 82 seconds to trail by one with 13 seconds left. Only a faceoff in their own end prevented them from seriously threatening to tie.

And that's BU. BC is better than that, and their offense is tops in HE. Far from leaving early, I think down by a goal in the third with only seconds remaining, most BC fans would be thinking, "now we've got them right where we want them" against most, if not all opponents. More often than not, they'd be right.

Sorry you had to put up with that, we get the same treatment out there. Fortunately, they don't really come to Agganis and when they do the Blue Shirt Mafia wouldn't let them do anything. A Mullins Center pro-tip, never ever ever ever ever sit in the GA sections if you are a BC or BU fan. You may not come out alive. We've had batteries thrown at us, beer spilled on us, been stalked from our seats, had drunken UMass fans who were previously thrown out of the arena wait by our bus so they could yell more and throw more things at us, etc. Spend the extra $3 and sit in the reserved seating up in a corner, the seats are actually quite comfy and we've rarely had any problems with roving UMass scum coming that far.
