Yes. Utica should definitely be ranked higher. But if teams ahead of them don't lose, they aren't going to move up.

Re: 1/28/13 Poll Speculation

I agree way more with the D3poll and Im a Oz fan...the USCHO is off for sure...but we all know what really counts

Re: 1/28/13 Poll Speculation

They did, but they aren't going to drop 8 spots so everyone can move up.

I think it is wrong to start with the previous week's poll and adjust rankings based on last week's performance. You need to consider the whole body of a team's season, not just last week's ranking and this week's results. That really is the reason that some teams get "trapped" in spots in the polls, and other teams get votes based purely on past reputation. Voters should not fall into those kinds of lazy habits.

I really don't know what the voters method's are... take the top of the poll for example. Norwich wins @ UNE 5-2 and @ USM 2-0. Bowdoin wins vs USM 5-1. Assuming that voters use the method Prof is rightfully calling lazy, that was enough to convince two voters to switch their first place vote from Bowdoin to Norwich. On the other hand, the lazy method is the only way to explain how Utica has not moved up. I'm not suggesting Bowdoin should be ranked #1, just that I don't think the voters even know their own methods.

How many votes does Manhattanville have on this poll? They have lost 5 of the last 8 are still ranked!

Re: 1/28/13 Poll Speculation

I have come to the conclusion that although these are very knowledgable hockey men, they do not take the time necessary to make an informed decision on the weekly rankings. They are too busy with coaching, recruiting, etc., to put the time in to do it justice. I know most of them don't like it and try to get off this committee after they're on it.

I agree that teams get "trapped" and cannot get up the polls with old guard on top, sometimes with no logic. Not to pick on Oswego, but exactly why are they ranked so high? St. Norbert also seems to not get punished that often. I know they dropped 2 spots, but their body of work for THIS season may not warrant such a high ranking. It seems to be tough for Utica, Hobart, Bowdoin to get much traction.

It's not an exact science, but I think some of the coaches more or less say "yeah, Norwich is still awesome even though they lost". That is true, and perhaps the human factor does a better job than computers. But how does somebody know how good Adrian is ?? Is is by them playing one or two games against eastern competition?? There are flaws, but for now it's all we have.

Re: 1/28/13 Poll Speculation

Guess what? No. 1 only matters if you have that ranking after winning the last game of the postseason! Everything prior to that is for discussion purposes only.

Re: 1/28/13 Poll Speculation

I have to say the voters(coaches and writers) really "probably" don't put much time into their voting. It's way more important to the fans here(some too much)...myself included I guess. I gave up two or three weeks ago wondering about the "validity" of these polls. Who the hell are the voters anyway...is there a list of them ??? Can we see who they are ?
