Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: Reset The Calendar Again

Quick note on the banning of the assault rifles: what to do with the current legal ones? If a buyback, how do you fund that?

Idea today: since armed teachers = bad idea, how about a program funded under the Homeland Security budget, that has ex-Armed Forces folks only, as liaison officers? Extra training to deal with civilian world, placed in schools? They would already have advanced weapon and active shooter training, the extra training would be to deal with civilians, rather than soldiers?

It would give veterans a job opportunity, it would be funded, and it would provide at least some sense of protection/defense of the schools?

No I didn't read back 5 pages of commentary.

In theory it is great but all you need is one Vet with PTSD or who fought in the ME seeing some Muslim student and you can figure out why the idea wont work.

You obviously haven't been reading and getting context or the fact that these are ideas to possibly be amended and compromised, to come to a full agreement. They don't fall in line with YOUR views, so they are obviously wrong. You are just as bad as the Trumpists and other hardliners when it comes to policy. So, I politely say, * You.

Sorry Brent but they dont fall in line with logic. The solution to the violence isnt more weapons...

And trust me no teacher is going to work in that environment. The Republican wet dream of no more public schools will become a possibility.

I get why it makes sense on the surface but in practice it will crumble. It is better to train teachers how to protect their students in other ways.

The kids seem to be striking a lot of nerves by speaking out. Latest slam against them I've seen is "you kids are just as deadly as gun owners with your texting while driving. Did texting laws curb those accidents?"

The fringe really are grasping at straws.

These are the folks who screeched like wounded banshees when NFL players took a knee.

NOTHING else has worked so far. Have to think outside the box. Accept it. Be willing to try something new. I have. This is one of those things.

Ban all guns except for the military and certain police units.

Be willing to try something new.

Extreme as arming teachers - that's something new, too. Both are not viable solutions.

We need to figure out why life has become an expense rather than an asset. When life is (re)considered to be something of great value I believe most of the mass killing will stop.

Why?

Other nations have done it and solved the problem.

"This is unavoidable" says only nation where this constantly happens.

How about this: ban all ranged weapons for 20 years. The sunset provision on the law is that after the 20 years we have a popular referendum on whether to revoke the ban.

We're talking about reducing the homicide rate by up to 67% -- gotta figure a few people are going to be really committed and go in for the strangling. Not to mention the suicide rate.

Facts.

That's why I specified additional training, to weed out the ones with PTSD and such. Plus, with my previous mentions of limitations on people with mental illness getting guns (which PTSD would most certainly fall under)....

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: Reset The Calendar Again

Had a nice cry this morning listening to one of the fathers of the victims (14-year old daughter) being interviewed on Morning Joe this morning. I have a picture of one of my kids when she was 14 in my office. Yeah, not a good morning.

My daughter is a teacher in a red state. The thought of these dumbas-ses actually moving forward with their "arm the teachers" derp is both sad and disgusting.

Here's an article about the dad confronting Rubio.

This is the disconnect on assault weapons.

People stood up and cheered Guttenberg as he challenged the Florida senator to tell him the truth, to acknowledge that "guns were the factor in the hunting of our kids."

Guttenberg added, "And tell me you will work with us to do something about guns."

Rubio responded that the problems laid bare by the shooting rampage "cannot be solved by gun laws alone," drawing jeering whistles from the crowd. He said that if he believed an assault weapons ban "would have prevented this from happening, I would have supported it." That drew jeers. Visibly angry, Guttenberg responded: "That is a weapon of war."

Sen. Bill Nelson and Congressman Ted Deutch, both Democrats from Florida, also were present on a dais.

Nelson said he grew up on a ranch and hunted all his life.

"I still hunt with my son but an AK-47 and an AR-15 is not for hunting, it's for killing," said Nelson to applause.

I believe Rubio is wrong and I hope the hell it costs him his seat. If this issue costs someone like him his seat in Congress that would be a legitimate move towards sanity.

Mine took a year or two after college to teach for Teach America or similar program in a poverty and crime burdened district in Nola. From what she described, bringing more guns into that environment would have been insane.

I’m sure we can all agree that if the kid went in with a .357 and only killed five people it wouldn’t have been a big deal.
