It changes nothing because too many people want to focus on the mechanics of the act, not the source of the problem. As I’ve posted in the past, it’s not a coincidence that these school shootings are by students or former students. They aren’t committed by random, violent individuals.

Most terrorist attacks arent random. Yet we never look beyond the surface of what the source is unless it is a white boy. If his name was Muhamed this conversation is quite different and you know it.

And BTW just saying "he did it cause of his religion" isnt finding the source either. (which is what people say about Muslims) Just like the one girl rejecting this boy isnt the source of why he did it. Americans just dont want to believe that their kid could be evil. He isnt some gang banger slinging drugs, this is a quiet middle classish white boy. They cant accept that.

People are bullied every day and have been going back to the beginning of time...only a select few kill people because of it. I am sure it is just a coincidence his social media was filled with Nazi stuff...

Many times, NOT ALWAYS, to use the name you used, Muhammed names an organization and/or religion they are acting in the name of. That specifically ties them to a greater cause. A couple of the white boys have also named a specific organization and or/religion they are acting in the name of.

The last couple of white boy shooters who have acted alone, took personal actions for themselves, not any group.

That's the difference.

Which begs the question - how did his parents not know? Were they just willfully ignorant, or did they encourage it?

But we need to dig deeper. Plenty of people align themselves with groups that do bad things but they themselves dont do them. Your analogy is lazy and proves my point more than you think of. Either we look into all of the terrorists or there is no point.

I agree look deeper, preferably when red flags come up (which there were some in this case). Right now, as we know, given that he "spared the kids he liked," he was not acting on any organization/group. He was acting by himself. This could change, we have to wait and see.

I am getting tired of:

"In the name of ISIS/National Socialist, I kill these people!"
"I'm depressed and bullied and no one likes me, so I kill these people!"

And then hearing how it's racist/etc to look at them differently. Same result, different mode of thinking. The mode of thinking is what we need to get at. As of this moment, this kid did not act in the name of any group, had some similar beliefs, but he still acted on his own.

Something we should consider is that the sense of entitlement kids have will have ramifications beyond these mass killings. I’m not sure how bright our future is if a large number of the upcoming generation is lazy and entitled.

I don't know if I can, you are correct in that aspect. We need more details. There needs to be more involvement (not coddling, Mr Rufus) in our kids' lives. Don't let society raise them. Take responsibility. Notice warning signs and act on them. Heck, this goes for anyone. If your buddy starts posting stuff or behaving in a way that is unlike anything you've seen, ask them about it. "Hey, something going on?" "You feeling alright?" Anything.

I think back to columbine a lot since I lived in boulder at the time and my roommate had graduated from columbine the year prior. I also worked on campus in the financial aid office and I’ll never forget the call I answered a few weeks later from a woman. She sounded terrible, and she told me her son had died in the shootings and wanted to establish a scholarship in his name. Since that was the first school shooting that most of us experienced, I wonder if klebolds parents would have known to notice anything. Up til that point it wasn’t common for someone to shoot up their school.
