When I go to purchase a gun I have already been through the NICS (FBI computerized background database)* process. Would I have to wait? You made no clarification for existing owners. Would I have to wait.

The point is the process could be instant. The gun lobby doesn't want that because then Wife Beaters wouldn't get their guns.

The "kid" (assuming of age) has to go through NICS. The Senate is working on improving that right now. Call your Senator.

If I have to go through the background every time I renew my airport badge, you can go through the background check every time you want to buy a gun.

Nor would the 19 year old female who just got the restraining order against the crazy ex-boyfriend who threatened to strangle her.

I do end up doing so. Most retailers love to see the ND concealed permit with the NICS report identifier number (an "NTN") for me on it; however, most still ask me to fill out the form and they call in to NICS. I finish the rest of my shopping and come back to the counter in 30 minutes.

Ah, gotcha. Your initial response to me didn't seem to indicate you purchasing another gun, but that could be poor reading comprehension on my part. So, you have a gun. Two questions - why do you need another one and why would it be such an issue to wait a few days to get an additional gun? OK a third question - why do you need it so quickly? I'm not trying to be a wiseass here. What is the rush? If you've already gone through whatever you need to go through to get on the NICS, the background check should be a breeze, right. They say good things come to those who wait.

Why more than one? The snark would be: nonausedambidnez. :) The real answer is a handgun is a machine. It needs maintenance. Mine get used on the target range and sometimes they are out of service for repair. For others, they own different types of machines for different purposes (long rifle for hunting; handgun for carry).

I have friends and relatives, some with carry permits and others without, that live 100+ miles from where they shop. You've just forced them into another 200+ mile round trip.

Now here's my challenge to you: Go to a retailer. Pick out something (so you have gravitas in their eyes)*. Fill out the paperwork. Go through NICS. Wait around until the retailer fills in the NTN and can finish the transaction. Tell us about the experience. (I hope you have a better day than this fellow; I trust you will.)

OK, makes sense. Replacing existing one. Not to build a collection. If the latter, there is literally no need to get it immediately.

I do not see the problem here. Maybe they could submit the request for a background check online ahead of time, like signing up for TSA Precheck. Once they get clearance, then they can drive the 100+ miles to pick up their gun.

Not sure what you're asking me to do here. Are you saying background checks can happen while you wait?? When I bought a car, it took FOREVER. When I bought my iPhone a few years ago, the process took a few hours. So? If it's something you want, you wait for it.

Nope, you're required to fill out the form in person and sign it in front of the retailer. That way if you lie on the form the FBI has a witness to your felony. (Lying on the NICS form is a felony.)

Funny piece. If Steinberg had kept his mouth shut and just went through with the transaction, I'm willing to bet it would've been approved. He's not such a high-profile journalist/writer to the point that he'd be instantly recognized by the average Joe Six-Pack at the gun store in the way that, say, Jake Tapper or Shep Smith would be.
