The issue with Gun Free Zones in the USA is that you're asking people to respect an idea when a portion of that population is armed to the teeth, and a subset of that portion is either completely insane (literally) or lazy in securing their weapons to keep them away from the mentally ill. Until we can make the US a nation that's not a bastion for nuts with guns, we're going to see GFZs targeted time and again - schools, universities, public parks, public services buildings, and any private organization that "bans guns on these premises."
It's a sad reality. The solution is going to be tough, to get past the NRA and useful idiots, and finally regulate these would-be pseudo militiamen.
