2024-25 Penn State Nittany Lions

Mercyhurst wins their semifinal match against Syracuse 5-2 on two late empty-netters.

So, once again, it's Penn State and Mercyhurst playing for the conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament. The AHA championship game is next Saturday, March 8, at Penn State's Pegula Ice Arena (time is still to be announced).

There's a pretty good chance Penn State makes the NCAAs regardless. Both Clarkson and St Lawrence would have to do big things in the ECAC tournament to get past Penn State in the NPI/Pairwise to knock Penn State out.

I really don't like the conference name change, it was kind of fun to say that you were playing for all the charbles. Syracuse definitely improved over the year. Robertearle gives some great insight. Scanlin for Mercyhurst is making a strong claim for Frosh of the year. It would be nice to see Cailey Thalman guest announce and do on the spot reporting for the game. Penn State should reach out to the blue guy and comp him some tickets and of course the band too. While the administrators are at it, make another free scouting day for the kids and try to get attendance up to 1700.

I hope Syracuse and RIT continue their upward swings. I'm glad Penn State has worked their way to the top of the conference now, but having more than the same two teams playing for the championship every year would be good for the conference. Mercyhurst has been strong forever, and pretty much the test for every other conference program, and now Penn State is there, too, and hopefully for the long haul like Mercyhurst has been.

Well that's good to hear!

Both are going to take one more (as would Penn State) loss to end up in the at-large discussion. Question is would one win for both be enough to jump Penn State and survive a loss in the Championship game? If Clarkson & St. Lawrence both win their SF games, that would mean Colgate and Cornell would both need at-large bids (that moves the cut-line up one). Penn State would be best served (obviously) to just win this weekend. I don't feel good about the sweat if they don't.

Cornell is stellar in goal, Bergeman is fantastic and can steal one any time and often does. Colgate surprisingly has not dropped off since Fargo bolted. Clarkson and St Lawrence are rightly in the mix, however McQuigge for Clarkson and Gosling for St Lawrence are a significant loss for each team. I sense a lot of parity after the top 2.

Took me one shot at the Pairwise Predictor to find an iteration where Penn State was out. Clarkson winning the ECAC puts the Nittany Lions in a precarious position. Obviously, we're going to win this weekend and not leave it up to chance!

AHA conference awards were announced today, and these were the winners from Penn State:

AHA Coach of the Year - Jeff Kampersal
AHA Player of the Year, AHA Forward of the Year, AHA Scoring Champion - Tessa Janecke
AHA Defenseman of the Year - Kendall Butze
AHA Goaltender of the Year, AHA Goaltending Champion - Katie DeSa

With the results in the ECAC last night, I believe that Penn state has punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament. The ECAC and WCHA finalists are already secured spots and a Penn State loss today doesn’t seem to drop them. That said, go get ‘em Lions!

That’s pretty cool. Well done. I think the hurst will win now …. having 2 AHA teams make the national tournament in its first year, while never having 2 CHA teams make the national tournament in one year in its entire existences is exactly what I would expect from the universe

Looks like St. Lawrence will be the team rooting for Penn State today. A Nittany Lion win gives the Saints the last at-large bid. A Mercyhurst win would bump them out.

After one, Penn State is up 2-0 on goals from Maddy Christian and Brianna Brooks. Shots on goal are 11-4 for Penn State, and there were no penalties in the period. Penn State is buzzing, and not letting Mercyhurst get anything set up offensively so far.

After two, Penn State is up 3-1 on a second period goal from Katelyn Roberts. Shots on goal are 18-9 for Penn State, and still no penalties in this championship game. The refs are letting them play, and it's a chippy one.

Penn State wins its third consecutive conference championship 4-1, on Brianna Brooks's second goal of the game. Shots on goal ended at 29-14 for Penn State, and penalties were one each.

Christian has had an unbelievable year. Best year out of nowhere since Robillard from Mercyhurst. I think Christian is over 20 goals.

Christian gets MVP and Stecker and Janecke are on the All Tournament Team. Nice to see Stecker rewarded just like last year when Machado was.
