University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Was very easy to get used to, after going to UND hockey games in the frozen desert at -35F, rush from the car to get into the arena to warm up, slipping & sliding on the ice covered parking lot........
I’ve been to a bunch of Florida’s panthers games in Sunrise, FL. Also, we used to go to Estero every winter for the Florida Classic we used to cohost with Cornell. It was fun going to games in flip flops and shorts. Margaritas were the pregame drink of choice. Those were the days. Not sure why they discontinued that tournament, it was fun for the fans.

Tell your coach to do a home and home series with Maine and I’ll make sure to go then!

Last year UNH was similarly also reeling at the time we went down there to face them, and we got obliterated twice over.

That said, I think 2025 Maine is a much better team than 2024 Maine, and that 2025 UNH is not as strong as 2024 UNH. And add in that it's at Alfond this time and not Durham, and it should be a more favorable result this time around. However, I've learned my lesson by now about underestimating UNH, and there are no such things as gimme games, especially against a major rival. It should be a great weekend with an electric atmosphere in the building.

My wishlist for future H & H series:

1. Michigan (will probably never happen)
2. Minnesota
3. North Dakota
4. Arizona State
5. Penn State
These would all be great series. I'd also throw Western Michigan on there, I think that could be a fun series to have. In general I'd like to see more games against the western conferences and less against the ECAC and AHA, but you can't have it all I suppose.

Maine had a home and home scheduled with Pedo State but COVID happened. Michigan is just not going to happen. Minnesota is not likely either. Arizona State would be an interesting series to be sure. North Dakota is the most likely. The two schools have a lengthy history and head coach Brad Berry spoke highly of the Maine fans when they came east for the Icebreaker.

Hopefully 2 Western series from here on out.....one H and one A (@denver next season).

I think the only way Michigan happens is if they do 1 game @ Maine and 1 @ BC/BU/UNH. They did a series @UNH a few years ago. Would probably be a Friday/Sunday thing if 2 different opponents. A one off Michigan game might be a good game for Portland? They can sell 6K tickets and be closer to their other opponent for the weekend whether it be UNH or 1 of the Boston teams.

Watching the Beanpot final, and hating myself for rooting for BU.

But, that's the better PW outcome for Maine, right?

Certainly didn't help Maine that NU lost to lowly Harvard...

It's academic unless it triggers an incredibly unlikely collapse by the Eagles. No one from Hockey East is going to catch BC for the top seed in the east. Even a H2H win in the final won't be enough for Maine.

With the BU win, Hockey East has nine teams in the top 20 and six of the top 11. UMass would be the seventh team in the field except an autobid for the ECAC knocks them out. Hockey East currently has two #1, #2 and #3 seeds...

Allentown regional
4 Maine vs Arizona State
Western Michigan vs Lowell

Excellent thought. Michigan would be a perfect fit for Portland. That would generate considerable interest in southern Maine, and as you say, be close to a different venue in the Boston area maybe so they can play another opponent that weekend. Make it happen.

I vaguely remembered this so I looked it up, and it is true, the Wolverines played a pair at the Whitt on Nov 22-23, 2019. If they were willing to play in Durham, why is Orono considered so out of the question? Too remote maybe, but they presumably flew into either Logan or Manchester, so what's the difference flying to Bangor instead?

Extended highlights of game 1 vs. Providence by “Lets go Maine”…

I've never understood the "remote" thing that a lot of people spout off about traveling to Orono. It's 4 hours from Boston...a long ride for sure but all on I-95 and most of it is not a "busy" drive. Secondly....anyone that flies into Bangor is literally 10-15 minutes from campus and again.....right off 95. The difficulty for Maine scheduling Michigan might be due to a few factors......#1 is financial. Michigan sells out wherever they play.....Whittemore Center seats 6,500......1,500 more than Alfond. Not sure what Michigan's demands are for H & H series....but Alfond might just be too small to suit Michigan's financial demands. #2....Alfond's reputation.....any OOC opponent wants a chance to at least split on the road.....not sure the odds are in Michigan's favor in that regard. #3......Over the past 20 years, Maine has not been PWR point worthy opponent....obviously that is changing so this will be less of a factor going forward. #4.....Boston schools are always going to be more attractive if Michigan is traveling to the East Coast.....Boston is a better recruiting base and more accessible to their alums.
