Future D3 (and D2) hockey programs

Yeah, know the Den barely makes par against the worst D3 rinks.

And I thought I read somewhere that SNHU gets the right to host events at the Arena as part of their naming agreement. Could be wrong, but if that's the case, there hasn't been a true tenant since the Monarchs left and they could fill the space. SNHU has solid athletics and steady growth... if they can make the leap and come to a solid agreement to use the Arena they'll be positioned well.

Sure.. if they get an agreement to play there.. then sure.. it's a big arena.. can't imagine they'd attract enough fans to make it worth it from a financial perspective though.. it'd be like AIC at the Mass Mutual Center..

Do remember, in order to move down, the whole entire school's athletic department has to move down. (The only reason they can play up is because there is no D2 national championship for hockey; otherwise they would have to move their entire athletic department up to D1 as well.) I don't necessarily see this happening for all the schools involved. For those schools, they either just continue their hockey program as a D2 independent, or shut down their hockey program all together.

I’m aware. I’m usually the one having to explain this to people. The NE10, as a league (not hockey specific) is going to die. The schools will more than likely move down to d3. Many of them have already done the feasibility studies of moving the departments up to d1 or down to d3. They landed on d3 being the most financially feasible. Source: coaches at the NE10 schools.

Besides hockey though, the NE-10 would still have 6 full time members to keep going even without St. A's and St. Michael's.

For hockey, feel like SNHU has the best bet at making the move to D1 for hockey between the arena and the school's growth. Franklin Pierce has the D1 women's team as a foundation but the school is struggling financially. Assumption has the athletics for a move up but would be one of the smallest schools in D1.

AIC is out of the question and feel like Post has zero incentive to make the move.

Franklin Pierce and AIC are on life support. Fact. I’ve heard rumors about Post but I cannot confirm.

I think the SUNY schools that we care about will be safe in the beginning at least. From what I've read it's the private schools thatre gonna go first, and then the smaller technical SUNY colleges (cobleskill, Delhi, morrisville) before the problem creeps up to the bigger SUNY schools. Luckily most of those at risk private schools are in the WNY/Southern Tier regions so there's plenty of SUNY schools to choose from as alternatives

Not saying Oswego is in “financial trouble”, but they had the ability to close two whole dorms with the current on-campus enrollment numbers. One (Johnson) because they had to due to mold and Two (Oneida) because they could and didn’t need it to meet the enrollment demands this fall.

I think the belief is should SNHU sponsor D1 hockey they'd be able to use the down town arena as there isn't much going on there. Until the Bruins move their AHL team there (maybe ). However, SNHU doesn't fund their programs well and has been cutting back on many things to buckle down for the storms ahead in higher ed. With that said, I fully believe their current "leadership" wants to move down to D3, but they cannot even hire an AD. So they'll likely wait until the inevitable collapse of the NE10.

With the Saint Mike's situation I know SNHU is looking at the possibility of moving hockey up to D1 as an Independent. I always figured they'd just shut down the program, but they have a lot of money coming through tuition tied to that team. So it seems they were look to keep it going as long as possible. They'd likely lose every game in D1 as I doubt they'd financially back the program as would be needed.

Long-term I suspect the NE-10 either looks to move down as a conference or folds and the remaining members drop to D3. I know Bentley and Assumption are mentioned above as possible move ups, but I think its more likely in the modern NCAA they go down. No one wants to look like Stonehill or Merrimack.

Frankly the NE-10 is already on life support. They've lost half their members in the past 20 years. And there is no one coming in to replace them. D2 in New England is on death's door.
