Video Games IX: GTA VI, PSN VI, Switch III, XBox whatever

Never graduate.
The previous thread was closed after a long life - but not as long as GTA V. Ironically, the last post in the previous thread was the announcement of the new trailer for GTA VI

Sony has announced that the release strategy for GTA VI physical media isn't a one-off. People buying the "physical" copy in the store will get an empty box with a code to do a digital download. Starting in January 2028, all Sony releases will be digital as physical copies go the way of the dodo. This comes on top of the news that the PS3 and PS Vita will no longer be supported from next July. Sony also announced that 550 movies and TV shows that people BOUGHT will be going away in September. The studio will of course issue refunds...just kidding. "You will own nothing and like it!" Just because we said you bought something doesn't mean you actually bought something. In the real world this would be theft.

Meanwhile, my PS5 tells me I have over 8000 hours played on RDR2...

Is it really anything new? Microsoft has basically been doing it for a decade and the PC market has been like that for a long time.

I mean, it’s a shitty thing for sure, but the horse has been out of the barn for a while now.

Flightsim 2020/2024 probably would've had to ship on like 6-8 Blu-ray discs just to account for all the GBs of scenery texture packs you have to download for each region of the world.

The upside is Microsoft hasn't taken away the purchase rights to digital media. Yet.

They shitcanned their Movies & TV platform, but I still can download and watch all my purchases. (Albeit with their DRM encoding still in place.) Digital games that have been de-listed from their marketplace are still available to download as well.

XBox says their business is "not healthy" and 1600 jobs are being shed immediately, and 3200 will be cut during FY27. That is 20% of the payroll. XBox will also cut ties with five game developers.

Executives aren't going to be spared. CEO Sharma says there are parts of the company where work passes through FOURTEEN layers of management before it can be approved. She wants to get that down to five, or even three.

14 reviews/approvals? Somehow, I'm sure my competitors have a "best practice" workflow for that. :)

Frankly, I'm just surprised they couldn't find a way to work "AI efficiencies" into the layoff announcement.
