UML Recruiting: Finally in the 20s!

Young is ranked as a 4* by NZ.
This is after a March 11th game:
Aiden Young is a dynamic forward who consistently creates scoring opportunities with his speed and agility. He excels at reading the play and timing his moves to create space for himself and others. His ability to get inside the defender’s reach allows him to release pucks in stride, making him a threat from multiple angles. Young’s quick thinking and reaction time enable him to capitalize on turnovers and bad breaks. He is an effective playmaker who can set up teammates with his vision and passing ability.

And January 22nd:
Aiden Young’s ability to create scoring opportunities is notable, as he consistently finds space on the weak-side of the ice to set up himself for chances. His movement on the backdoor and setting up plays for teammates demonstrate a good understanding of the game. He also utilizes his speed to drive the pace on the rush, frequently pushing the puck wide and creating space behind the defensemen.

You can keep saying this, and I'll keep telling you the same thing - it's not going to happen.
It's called hope we need to get out of the quicksand maybe you enjoy losing especially at home. I think there's a lot of of us that would like to see the change.

I get your frustration, but as Scott noted on the season thread, Norm is likely to sign an extension soon, so you're not going to get what you want anytime soon.

Misha Volotovskii has committed to Lowell for next season. 6'2" 2005-born left-shot forward had 17-17-34 in 61 games split between Medicine Hat and the Vancouver Giants this year. After getting traded to Vancouver his production dropped off but they were also one of the worst teams in the WHL. It's becoming more obvious that the staff is prioritizing the Ontario and Western leagues.

source on the commit is The Province's article on the 3 OAs after the team missed the playoffs. goes over more on his season and the trade- the Flames reassigned OA Andrew Basha from the AHL at the deadline. Misha ended up the odd one out.

Started his career with Saskatoon with Austin Elliott, traded to Med Hat at the deadline last season. Tigers won the WHL champs and made it to Mem Cup finals where he played against Elliott. Med Hat gave him a letter this season but he ended up traded. He was born in Russia but raised in Calgary.

basically, a longtime teammate of Elliott's, solid key player in Med Hat's championship, longtime veteran in the dub.

According to Sydney Wolf and the Sioux Falls Stampede website, their captain, Joe McGraw, has committed to Lowell. 2005 6'1" right-shot forward had 13-20-33 in 49 GP during the regular season, and captained the Stampede to the second best record in the USHL. According to Wolf, he was previously committed to Army, then Ohio State, then St. Cloud, and now Lowell. We'll see if his most recent commitment sticks 😅

Any indication of when he is coming here? I didn’t find anything in my search. Based on his age/size and three years of experience in juniors, I’m guessing/hoping it’s next year. Just speculation, but maybe he thinks (or has been told) UML offers the best chance at signifiant playing time vs. OSU or St. Cloud.

He'll be turning 21 in December, so I would imagine he'll be here this season. He's listed as a 3.75 by NZ.

Agreed, he should arrive next season. Elite Prospects is now showing him as a Lowell recruit.

Interesting commitment history:
11/21/23 - Army
3/25/25 - Ohio State
12/18/25 St Cloud
4/8/26 - Lowell

St Cloud is in the process of hiring a new coach so that may have factored into his decision to move on from the Huskies.

A new recruit according to the Lowell Sun article below. It looks like he's a former Maine recruit.

I have to imagine Wakely played a part in getting Wellenreiter to Lowell. They played together two seasons ago in North Bay.

Wellenreiter is another 3.75* per NZ. He committed to Maine back in 2022 (wow, that's a long time ago).

So all three of these recent commits are for 2026/2027 (Wellenreiter, McGraw and Sisson). Young is for 2027/2028.

After the portal closes, I'll update the roster when I have a moment.

Comments on Wellenreiter from the CHL to NCAA thread.

he was one of the earlier BCHL guys to jump to the OHL after the rule change, especially considering he was undrafted. standout skill is his shot, notably good in shootouts. NB were 5-1 in games that went to shootouts, and he was always the first guy and he only missed twice. in this season's coaches poll he was named 3rd best shootout shooter in the Eastern Conference. he would've played tonight if not for the major flooding of basically every road around their arena... solid player with finishing ability

the one immediate connection to any current UML guys is a brief overlap with Dominic Payne during 23-24 when both played for the Sherwood Park Crusaders- i think Wellenreiter was traded there at the deadline. could be something else further i haven't found yet
