Minnesota Women's Hockey 2025-26

Didn’t realize the agents are influencing recruits on where to go these days. Such a different world we live in now.
I doubt there's much of that yet in women's hockey at the NCAA level, but anytime you hear of somebody getting a $1M NIL deal, I'm sure there's an agent getting a cut. I believe that top deals even in a more established sport like volleyball likely have a ceiling around $200K.

NIL deal monitoring through a third party started back in July. Supposedly there has to be some sense to deals going forward in that the player has to contribute something of value in return for the money. I would agree this isn't a factor in women's hockey. Many NIL collectives disbursed large funds prior to July so they wouldn't have to go through the reporting.

Looking at the Gopher website, Jess Scott (and video coach Ryan Kearney) is staying on and Mitch Baker's name is no longer listed.

Some goalie coach names that may make sense:

-Alli Altmann (St. Thomas): Worked with the US Olympic team this year. I'm sure that drew plenty of attention.
-Mackenzie Bruch (Minnesota State): Worked with the US U18 team this year, where May was an assistant coach. Was at Yale before MSU.
-Noora Raty (St. Cloud State): I don't think this one requires further explanation.

Just spitballing here if those don't work out:

-Pete Samargia (Minnesota Frost): Graduated from Augsburg the year before May got there as a student.
-Karel Popper (ECHL Wheeling): Was the Gophers' goalie coach from 2018 to 2021.
-Brennan Poderzay (men's goalie coach): Unsure to this point if the new staff's gonna keep him on. Worked with the NWHL Whitecaps and PWHL Frost.
-Olivia King (color commentator): Recent graduate who's been doing some goalie coaching at the high school level in addition to her media work.
-Anyone who runs a goalie school in the area, I don't know actually

The USCHO podcast does talk about your coaching situation if you want to hop on there and take a listen. It's towards the end, but not the end.

Brad Frost did so much good for Wisconsin women's hockey recently that I'm not surprised that two Badger fans would speak highly of him.

Okay I'm over the past now. Moving on.

May went on Mike Grimm's podcast today. Among other things, he said that all eleven committed players for the next two seasons had reaffirmed their commitments, the entire coaching staff should be finalized within two weeks, and Sophia Johnson's transfer was a matter of her wanting playing time.

They are purely journalists who are from Wisconsin, who happened to cover the team. I would never question their objectivity.

Maybe some fans won't care as much because she's Canadian though.
Remember that at this point you represent a significant percentage of the UM fanbase.

IMO, D are a little like goalies, in that the prospects who are highly sought as preps don't always develop as much through their college careers. Milica McMillen and Lee Stecklein were in the same class in HS, and when they were both sophomores, people like me would have picked the wrong if asked to identify which one would someday win two gold medals and be a foundational piece of a pro team. I heard 10 plaudits about Vivian Jungels for every mention of Emma Peschel in HS, but by the end of their careers, the latter was every bit as impactful.

In recent years, the Gopher talent on the blue line (and in net) hasn't always developed to the same degree that it once did. That played a big part in the decline of the program. I can't say whether that's because the staff recruited the wrong people or didn't know how to maximize the talent that they got.

Per the interweb, 09 F Sydney Stoughton is not going to be tunneling, but living above ground in a valley instead. So much for all the recruits pledging allegiance to the new H/C.

Stoughton's a good player who unfortunately missed a lot of last year with injury. Team will be missing some size without her but I don't feel the same way about this one that I feel about Mossey.

Injuries, specifically to Kaltounkova, have just killed the Siren offense. I went to the game in NYC and it was a great atmosphere and a great win, but they didn't score until there were four minutes left in the game.

What is Kaltounkova's injury and the prognosis? Any chance NY get's the #1 oal pick? I sure would love to see KK in a NY jersey.

Possible but not likely on the #1 pick. Seattle's already been eliminated so they can start accumulating points toward the #1 pick right away. Not worried because they'll end up with someone good, and then next year when even more expansion happens they'll be starting from square one again.
