UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

My big question is, do we actually think they will start next week? I imagine the plans have been in place for some time (I haven’t been to the Whitt in a bit unfortunately, so I don’t know how long this display has been there).

Especially with regard to your other comment about more imminent budget cuts, I wonder if the optics of that will force a delay of sorts. The $19.7m is earmarked for renovations and I can’t imagine they legally could redistribute things around, but I agree the optics of it may really piss some people off (similarly along the lines of the football scoreboard a number of years ago). But again… this is mostly private money so there’s nothing UNH could likely do even if they wanted to regarding moving things around.

Regarding raising money for the state. I saw this article a couple of days ago. Money will mostly go to the turnpike system, but I imagine some will go to the general budget and maybe find its way to the university system. I think this will face major opposition in the house/governors desk, not to mention pissing off a lot of out of state people simply using 95 to get to Maine etc… looks to raise 30-70m in the next couple of years.

I was told by the PM for the project that it would be starting next week. Probably won't see much real work for several weeks as Gilbane will need to mobilize, set up construction trailers, fencing ect.

Optics.

With the school navigating a significant financial crisis and, according to a conversation with a UNH professor yesterday, another round of $30m cuts is imminent. This will significantly impact faculty in the classroom.

Not a good look for UNH to promote $19.3 in arena upgrades for an under performing hockey team when budget is being cut across academic departments.
UNH will be a skeleton of itself soon. There is one easy solution to raise additional revenue for the state but our sleeping governor won't consider any tax increases. Returning the rooms and meals tax to 9% from 8.5% the last I looked equated to roughly $30M a year.

Well.... yes and... UNH is currently paying for what they get

In 2008 when the Whitt was full and the team was on a run Umile made $382k. That is about $575k in todays dollars. So UNH has paid an equivalent rate when they were getting the extra about $1.5M+ in todays $$ from a full building and had a top flight coach.

If I had to guess Bazin has been running on a series of 5 year contracts. So he landed at a new contract in 2016-2017 right at the end of a run that was 4 NCAAs in 5 years, 1 Frozen 4, 1 Regular Season Title and 2 HE Tournament titles. (I am assuming the 2016-17 year was after the contact was all signed, it might have been signed after 2013-14) Want to boost your contract, that is the time to do it. That is what Umile did to get the 2008 pay out.
Bazin’s last two 5-years contracts were signed in December 2016 and December 2021, respectively. So, presumably his next 5-year if offered will be signed in December 2026 to cover the 2027/28 - 2031/32 seasons. I am curious how much is he making this coming year given his $540k salary for the 2021/22 season. State school so the info must be available.

You may be right, as what has kept UNH afloat the last few decades has been a superlative record of engineering and physical science faculty punching way above their weight for R1 academic institutions in raking in federal grants with indirect costs (overhead). But over the past 15 months, those federal programs have been decimated.

When it came time to look at engineering programs, daughter grouch ranked UNH at the bottom of the list and didn't even bother applying.

The state of NH is nearing the point of failed state status. It lives off toll revenue from out of state drivers. Very little industry, no income taxes, no progress. Is it any surprise UNH has a 90% admissions rate and is falling apart? Very sad. Without the generosity of Massachusetts, New Hampshire would be Haiti without the warm Caribbean waters.

Without MIT and Harvard Massachusetts would be an economic shell. There isn't something magical the State of Mass did, two private institutions created an innovation eco system that is really only found in 3 places - Boston (MIT & Harvard), Silicon Valley (Stanford) Research Triangle (Duke, UNC, NC-State). The National Science Foundation is trying to figure out how to duplicate the success of those 3 places across the country - and that includes Chicago, bigger city but doesn't have the same innovation engine .

Please stop thinking the that State of Mass is the magic, some magic extra taxes policy that created the economic structure.

The magic is 2 lead private Universities and the private University eco system in Boston (BU, BC, Tufts, NU, Wentworth, etc., etc.) Most of those 128 business that spun out of MIT and Harvard, Federal Funding.

I am still generally trying to ignore you but there are times you post things so stupid I can't stop myself.

Listen… I don’t want to get int state politics here. Like HR, I’m here for the hockey.

With that being said, comparing NH to Haiti without the Caribbean is a bit much hyperbole, don’t you think? We are all here because we love UNH hockey, which is a big part of what makes New Hampshire special to many of us. Bashing the state like this, in this kind of forum, isn’t warranted in my book.

I’ll leave it at that. Looking forward tonight! Let’s hope for a strong rebound from Thursday to end the RS on a happy note, and maybe some momentum heading into the 1st round.

Does senior night bring some energy and a win at home? Still a lot to be decided with the HE games tonight.

Other than 1st and last nothing is solidified. We will avoid a trip to Orono no matter what as Maine can only drop to 6th. It will be either Agannis, Walter Brown, and Lawler on Wednesday.

Prediction 3-2 Umass in OT.

Mrs. Grouch referenced how "blah" she is about this senior class and how this is one of the least enjoyable seasons in the last 30 years.

As the the resident optimist of our house and at The Whitt, this speaks volumes to the state of UNH hockey.

Class of '11. Mr Hr as you know is also a UNH engineer grad. Should mention our.son got i to WPI Clarkson Northeastern. UNH was the best fit for him. All good he's been doing well in his field.

All depends on type of engineering. With as specialized of a degree Baby Grouch is studying, she really only had three options in the US.
