2026 Winter Olympics: Thread Title Under Construction

Somehow, that one is different…
Buying into the Orange Guy's theory of Russia = Good, China = Bad, eh?

And just to put it out there, I fully understand why BOTH athletes bailed and took their opportunity to chase Olympic glory (spoiler: $$$$$$$$$$).

Lol I was going to say it’s because Wild is white. ;)

I also fully understand why they both bailed, though I wonder how much money Gu is actually making considering she likely has to pay US taxes (assuming she still kept her citizenship) and the considerable bribes to CCP officials to keep them out of her hair.

TBF, the I find the whole “controversy” about Gu to be stupid. It’s always been an obvious racist and nationalist dog whistle for right wing media around the Olympics.

Is Eileen goo what happens when you Come on Eileen?

Won't be watching any of it, NBC can go screw
VPN plus Canadian coverage.

If you watch any other country's coverage you will appreciate just how much Americans have been trained to consume jingoistic trash.

Exception: Canada is as bad with hockey as we are.

Every country has a nationalistic bent to their coverage in the sports they excel at. Like, I’m sure CCTV’s table tennis coverage would be similar.

Sure. So only watch events from countries that don't have anybody competing in them. Because US athletes earn / are given ungoldly money to make them into machines, we compete in and ruin US coverage of every event.

TBH the best Winter games coverage is probably the UK because they suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

But the US audience is also the Ur case of xenophobes who do not give a shit about anybody else. We are Germania if the Nazis had won* the war.

* Day's not over, yet.

The coverage sucks because the system sucks. We’re really the only country that doesn’t have direct government funding towards athletes, so every athlete and NGB at the Olympics is desperate for the kind of coverage NBC gives so they can get some kind of sponsorship to actually be able to live and train. And I can tell you, the vast majority of US athletes aren’t being paid ungodly amounts of money, even the ones who win medals.

And I’ll be honest, I kind of like the American-centric coverage. I like seeing athletes in less popular sports getting a little chance at the spotlight. I really don’t care about Norway’s 15th cross country skiing medal.

I took a mogul skiing clinic from a former Olympian years ago, and he basically said the same thing. Your best bet is winning the gold and hoping it leads to deals to become an ad spokesmodel, but even that usually only happens to the most prominent athletes. This is especially true for the Winter Olympics, which has a much smaller audience.

As a kid, I can remember Picabo Street doing Chapstick ads when she was one of the top ski racers on the planet. I also remember that Ted Ligety parlayed his medals into becoming a resort ambassador for Park City.

Kikkan Randall (cross country skier) parlayed being a World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist into… being the President of the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage and commercials for the local Subaru dealership.

Michelle Kwan being the Ambassador to Belize in the Biden administration is wild one.

I’m kinda curious as to which NGB (National Governing Body) in the US spends the most. Probably US Soccer but I imagine Gymnastics, Figure Skating, Track and Field, and Ski/Snowboard are contenders.
