Sun Devil Hockey

ASU looked pretty great too, keeping up with a high power team. despite the result i'd be very excited for the season if i were you guys.

Sean McGurn looked awesome and murdered in the faceoff dot. not always you see someone transfer and get a letter immediately. he was the captain of the always-dangerous London Knights his last year of juniors when they went to the finals, ultimately losing after their starting goalie was injured. he joined powerhouse UNB when they went on their undefeated season for a championship, this past year they lost a few games but still won their division championship. basically all this dude does is go on deep runs with powerhouse teams.

but please do fix that power play, way too much talent for it to be that lifeless.

The power plays were anemic......

The first invitational tournament of the year this weekend, the "Icebreaker Tournament". Being in Tempe where temperatures are barely below 100 F it should have been called the "Icemelter Tournament"?
Then the first (?) invitational tournament of 2026, the "Desert Hockey Classic" is in Tempe.
This got me wondering how many and which NCAA D1 hockey universities have sponsored 2 regular season tournaments in the same season. I did the web search but nothing came up. Does anyone have an answer?

Icebreaker, 3rd tournament title in as many years for ASU. Plus the US Hockey Hall of Fame win 4 years ago. Hopefully the trend continues against tough competition.

Jack Beck (NHL minor league) first NCAA D1 hockey game is tomorrow against Miami. Will be interesting to see how he does, how he fits in.

Congratulations to Coach Powers. Helps for making his position even more secure than it was. Possibly frees up his university salary to be used NIL money for the players or extra money for the associate & assistant coaches?

Do you know why Justin Cloutier has only played 4 games? Healthy scratch or injured?

Justin Cloutier reportedly has returned to the OHL Soo Greyhounds.

Besides the limited minutes, he had been dealing with a significant illness and just hadn't gotten back in the lineup since recovering. Not that surprised, he still has the one year of junior eligibility left and seemed like the match and timing was off.

Circling back on this... emphasis on the significant illness and timing being off. he only just returned to playing this past week even though it was known he was going to join the team for a month.

This article in the Sault Star just came out and talks about the larger situation with the illness, which was extremely serious.

Last season, he finished third in team scoring with 28 goals and 54 points and was named an assistant captain before heading south to Arizona. But shortly after arriving with the Sun Devils, his health took a sudden turn, contracting E. coli, a bacterial infection.

Cloutier’s brief stint in Arizona inevitably drew outside scrutiny. Some pointed to the 5-foot-9 winger — a player who never dominated the OHL offensively — as an example of why CHL players shouldn’t rush the jump to the older, more physically mature NCAA game.

But that framing doesn’t feel fair considering the reality of the situation.

“The reason why I wasn’t able to play more was (because) I got sick on that road trip,” Cloutier said, referencing the Sun Devils’ October swing through Augustana University in South Dakota. “There’s no hard feelings with ASU … There was nothing they could have done. They can’t play me when I’m on dialysis.”

Arizona State head coach Greg Powers echoed that sentiment earlier this month in a media conference, calling the situation “very serious” and emphasizing that Cloutier’s health always came first.

“He got really sick, and we weren’t going to talk about that publicly, but it was very serious to (the point) where he was hospitalized,” Powers said, adding that he returned to Canada around Halloween. “We’re just thrilled that he’s healthy now after being out so long. It was best for him to stay close to home and go back to junior. There was no ill will. He’s an unbelievable kid.”

I was thinking he had just been having a hard time getting back in the lineup after recovering, but he wasn't even recovered at all. He was told he wouldn't play at all this season, so credit to him and his support system for getting him back to playing shape. That one definitely comes down to terrible timing instead of how well prepared he was for the college game. nothing prepares you for a health scare like that at that age. ASU did right by letting him go home. Wish him the best and maybe he ends up back next year, but most importantly he's healthy.
