Movies: Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer are stuck in La La Land

Cleaning the house and filling one of the gaps in my cultural literacy today: Elf.

20 minutes in, it is the movie and the casting I would have made.
Reading this makes me think of the Field of Dreams quote.

“I experienced the 60’s”
“No, I think you had two 50’s and moved right on into the 70s”

I was gonna say it might be the last big classic Christmas movie, but Polar Express came out a year later. Except that kid on the train is unbearable.

Theory of Everything.

Beautifully paced and scored. Gorgeous filming. A/A-

I loved it but be warned it's all talking. The few "action" sequences look like they were stuck in to give this more than a My Dinner with Andre appeal. And if you want a tight resolution, you aint gonna get it.

In atmosphere this is like a SF marriage of Wolfram Eilenberger's Time of the Magicians, one of the greatest histories of philosophy ever written, and David Lindley's Uncertainty, a hysterically overblown but really fun history of science bodice ripper.

I love how many people are positive about Weapons. It is so well done.

IMO it compares favorably to Memento as a movie that is simultaneously original, deep, and entertaining. I hope it has a salubrious effect on an industry that needs an enema.

DGF said it perfectly: I love when someone does something different and it works.

Netflix wins the auction for Warner Brothers and will now enter negotiations for a final deal. If an agreement can't be reached or the acquisition is blocked by the FCC, Netflix will pay WB a $5 billion fee.

Allegedly, Netflix has promised that WB will be free to continue with theatrical releases but we'll see if that happens.

They are going to have to bribe Trump good to get that through. The Saudis must really be tightening up their money if Paramount lost...

They will keep theatrical releases because they will need the revenue. There will be less though. Blockbusters and award bait will get a run...most everything else is hit or miss.

If the deal goes through, which between the US and other places like Europe is going to be tough it is going to be huge. And with MAGAtes at Comcast and Paramount pushing this could be quite the fight. Heck even morons like Mike Lee seem against it. And of course...no way other studios wont fight to block this. You think Di$ney is going to just let this lie? Netflix/Warner Brothers will become the biggest streamer in the world. It would not surprise me at all if Netflix pays the $5 billion penalty cause this falls through.

FWIW I think if Paramount had not tried to buy the whole thing they might have had a chance. They wanted the Turner Networks too which WBD is spinning off to be owned by Discovery.

Idiot Snyder fans are already celebrating James Gunn's imminent dismissal and the return of the Snyderverse. They are delusional.

I think Ellison just assumed no one would bid against him knowing he has the backing of the wannabe King. He released a letter whining about the process and threatening that the administration will come to his rescue (that seems kosher, doesn't it?).

They are Qanon style losers. They said the same thing when the Paramount offer was announced. Meanwhile Snyder has basically been fired by Netflix because no one watches his movies. The Army of the Dead was so awful it should have been on Tubi...and from what I'm told it's the best of the films he made there.

Paramount is going to sue (as is Comcast) just like Zazlov did when Skydance outbid him for Paramount. And I bet Europe won't be happy about this.

Synops makes it read like a m night shamalamala movie 🤔😳

Speaking of horror movies on HBO max, I couldn't finish "Bring Her Back." It's very rare I have to walk away - but THAT scene did me in, and I could not go on. and it haunted me for a few days.

Just read a brief plot synopsis. Yeah no thanks.

There’s enough trauma in the world. I don’t need movies to add to that. Blech.
