Seeing more angles of things. Plane was using 17R, clipped a UPS warehouse on the south end as it went down and then went into an area full of recycling centers and salvage yards. One of those businesses that looks to have been hit was a place that specialize in petroleum product recycling. Definitely a huge environmental/HAZMAT concern.

7 reported dead so far and expected to rise but could take time to get an accurate number. Seeing a few posts with pictures that claim to be the left engine, heavily damaged and burned, laying next to the runway. Haven't seen anything that would confirm this from a more official source.

Can't exactly confirm that but it's near certain that's what happened.

Well yeah, kinda hard to have a sort with no packages since you can't land any planes at the hub tonight.

Shit like this must terrify you. I have seen stuff on the news where I knew what was going on. Unfortunately it was bad things on the other side of the planet. I was always struck by how (1) the news did not get a single thing right yet quickly settled on a common narrative which solidified into a wall blocking comprehension, and (2) traditional photojournalism is a gauzy anesthetic -- what really happens is so immediate, scalding, agonizing, chaotic, terrifying, and above all uncontrollable. A real explosion is not capturable. We have been trained by a thousand movies in a lie. A real explosion does not fill the screen, it comes at you like a wild animal and robs you of perspective. It swallows the world and has no bounds or logic and it takes child, hero, mother, the innocent, the target, the simply unlucky.

It does scare me to some extent, how could it not? This is something that is always in the back of my mind as I watch planes take off literally hundreds of feet away from me.

That said, I’m not too surprised that this happened with an MD-11. Man I hate those planes, I used to work them every day before we switched to 747s and probably put damage to my body because of them. Not to mention how time consuming they were to work because they require a specific unload/load process. Most importantly they were maintenance pits, always having problems that would ground them all the time.

Most importantly, I lost brothers and sisters. Yeah, they were pilots and we have totally different responsibilities and pay rates, but they were still fellow workers.

It’s going to be a rough few days at work.

I am amazed that MD-11s only date from the mid-80s. I would swear up and down I flew them in the late 70s in jerkwater routes like Allegheny Airways puddle jumpers from LI to NJ to PA to central NY.

Yeah it would’ve been a DC-10, MD-11’s are just updated DC-10’s.

Looking at the map and flight data the plane barely missed the Ford plant. If it had been on the other North/South runway it would have.

Looks like death toll up to 9 with more expected still. Confirmed that the pics of an engine on the ground back by the runway are from the plane.

While this is quite bad, it could have been SO MUCH worse. Had the plane been departing northward from either runway, it would have crashed into a highway and/or a convention center where a livestock convention was getting set up, or other likely more populated commercial areas. To the south on the other runway, and its likely it would have it a Ford assembly plant. I don't know if the east/west runway is used (likely way to short for this plane) but either direction there is residential. The south end of this runway was likely the least populated area. Even then, it just missed a restaurant that based on video looked like it was quite busy at the time. Had it veered just a little bit west, it looks like it would have hit more buildings and possibly caused even more damage.

There's a reason the double-decker MD-12 didn't happen, and it's the DC-10 and MD-11. So McD did the logical thing in American business - swallowed Boeing and spent 30 years fucking them up.

The L-1011 was the best tri-engined plane ever made (not to mention best looking) and would've defeated the DC-10 on the marketplace if fucking Rolls Royce had gotten their shit together, or if Lockheed had picked more than one engine supplier.

Anyway, I digress. I'm sorry for you and your coworkers.

NTSB confirms that the #1 (left/captain side) engine detached and was recovered at the airport. NTSB also recovered the FDR and CVR, says they have heat damage but should be able to recover data.

Boeing has recommended to airlines that they temporarily ground their MD-11s. UPS and FedEx have both said they will comply, no word on if the other operators will.

There's a woman on TikTok who, at the start of the SNAP funding suspension, started calling around various churches (small, mega, Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, black, Muslim, etc.) and just simply asked for one can of formula for her infant. She had "ran out" and needed just a can to get by for a few days. Newer videos include the sound of a baby crying in the background for dramatic effect.

She's posted videos of calling 33 churches and ...

... Nine said they could help.

The Mosque responded with "where are you, I can get some and bring it immediately." The black church responded just as quick. A very small Appalachain church called had the pastor answer directly and he was asking "what size, what brand, are there any specific flavors?" This man told her he knew many in his church would be hurt from this, and he would do the same for his congregation or a random caller who needed help (like this woman tested).

Unsurprisingly, the bigger churches and Mega churches outright declined. One said they "only help their members," and asked if she would join. Charlie Kirk's church flat out denied help as well.

One pastor stitched her video and claimed that the reason his church doesn't do things like this is because of people like her who scam the church. The comments aren't going how he expected.

Seems like a lot of churches have forgotten the teachings of Christ. Tax the ones who refuse to help.

I did two three-month stints on a major military base in Afghanistan for work. What they teach you to do during a rocket attack has forever have me yelling at every explosion reaction I see on TV/movie.
