2024-25 PWHL season

But there's a database that has professors, admins, etc for PSU. It has coaches and trainers from the non-main campus athletics programs...but somehow I can't find the PSU coaches. Ultimately I'm not going to go on a quest to dig into Kampersal's wallet. I compiled that list to help establish context based on publicly available data. But there is something strange with PSU athletics compared to other D1 public schools in hockey.
This is what I found online in the only search I'm going to do:

"Penn State coaches' salaries are not public because the university, being a "state-related" institution, is not subject to the same open records laws as other public institutions in Pennsylvania. Specifically, Penn State only needs to disclose the salaries of officers, directors, and the top 25 highest-paid employees in its annual Right-to-Know report. While this report includes salary details for some coaches, it doesn't necessarily include all of them, especially assistant coaches."

Thank you for the clarity.

This is interesting info about the college coaching salaries. There is such a wide range.

The PWHL's expansion draft will be on Monday at 8:30pm eastern/5:30pm Pacific time, per thepwhl.com. No word yet on the pick order between Vancouver and Seattle.

Seattle has 2 potential signing spots in the Exclusive Signing Window that are still open as of early this morning.

Interesting about PSU. At least they didn't opt to name it Penn State Related (or perhaps more accurately, Penn Commonwealth).

If you want to look at IRS filings (Form 990) for charitable institutions, which include private colleges, use Guidestar.org and search for a college.

To set up an account is free.

Seattle used those two slots to sign Alex Carpenter and Corinne Schroeder, both from the New York Sirens.

New York now uses their 4th protection slot to protect Maja Nylén Persson - the 3rd D that they are protecting. She has gotten praise from Coach Greg Fargo for defending as if she was in a lawn chair, because of her comfort level in her position. She's 24 and played in the SDHL for almost a decade before being drafted to NY last year.

This basically makes sense to me. I guess the odder choice was protecting Zandee-Hart in one of the initial protection slots, as well as now having three defenders protected. But Zandee-Hart being the captain helps explain this.

She had also spoken to Karissa Donkin of CBC about the difficulty of the team being scattered to expansion and not knowing who would be selected. Zandee-Hart herself is from BC - an island near Vancouver in fact - and said the westward expansion was exciting. She would have been a good pick-up for Vancouver but I think would have gone in the draft rather than exclusive signing. Ella Shelton might have been a good exclusive signing candidate, though, for example for her effectiveness on the power play. Even though plus-minus is not the end-all-be-all, Shelton, Fillier, Carpenter, and Eldridge had better +/- this season than Zandee-Hart. The tribute from Zandee-Hart to NY's fans at the end of the first season was very touching - that the fans have stuck with them and they love playing for the fans - and she's clearly very committed to the Sirens. I am just not sure of GM Pascal Daoust's strategy and how he could replace the players who are being signed to other teams.

New York has now quickly lost the two players whose jerseys it was selling as the key players this past season - Carpenter (to a one-year contract) and Schroeder (to a two-year contract). The PWHL teams did not have jerseys available for purchase throughout the lineup but, at least in NY's case, had these two players picked out. So you would see a lot of Carpenter and Schroeder on fans' backs at games.

New York will get first pick in the entry draft this year later in June. I feel that Casey O'Brien would be very good for the Sirens... Another entrant being discussed, Kristýna Kaltounková is a strong forward, but personally I'm not the biggest fan of her game. Probably defenders Winn, Nicole Gosling, and Guilday will go pretty high, and with all these defender protection slots NY probably needs to prioritize forwards and goaltenders. Maybe they can sign Rooney, Chuli, or Klára Peslarová, as long as she continues playing, in net in free agency! It sounds like Peslarová has been underrated. Forward Michela Cava has won five championships in a row in the SDHL, Russia, PHF, and PWHL and will be a free agent.

For more forwards, Theresa Schafzahl, Liz Schepers, Victoria Bach, Maggie Connors, and Rebecca Leslie will be free agents; Tereza Vanišová too, but I dunno if NY would want to take on all her PIMs. Sorry, a long ramble!

Pretty sure Victoria Bach has retired as of this Spring.

Here is a vague "mock" expansion draft, in my view, inspired by The Athletic's mock expansion draft by Hailey Salvian and Shayna Goldman, also based on the added info of who has now been signed (though the draft order, or possibility of a snake format, is not known):
(Edited: I removed Compher, who will be a free agent, and I adjusted and added Boreen at the end.)
1. SEA: Hannah Bilka (F, BOS)
(BOS protects Sidney Morin, D.)
2. VAN: Ashton Bell (D, OTT)
3. SEA: Jaime Bourbonnais (D, NY)
4. VAN: Grace Zumwinkle (F, MIN)
5. SEA: Nicole Hensley (G, MIN)
(MIN reaches max 4 players selected.)
6. VAN: Jessie Eldridge (F, NY)
(NY reaches max 4 players selected.)
7. SEA: Aneta Tejralová (D, OTT)
(OTT reaches max 4 players selected.)
8. VAN: Julia Gosling (F, TOR)
9. SEA: Anna Wilgren (D, MTL)
10. VAN: Emma Maltais (F, TOR)
(TOR reaches max 4 players selected.)

11. SEA: Megan Carter (D, TOR)
12. VAN: Denisa Křížová (F, MIN)
13. VAN: Sydney Bard (D, BOS)
14. SEA: Emily Brown (D, BOS)

Seattle selected forwards early in the draft and D later on, while Vancouver did the opposite. Dave Flint was acknowledged by the hosts of Jocks in Jills, Bonhomme and Tocheri, as being among the Seattle staff. As you see no one selected a goaltender.

Carter played for Flint at Northeastern (as did Křížová, though).

The GMs also gave interviews in the studio in Toronto after the draft. I don't think there were many surprises in the interviews of course. In the draft I was a bit surprised by the Daniel and Rosenthal picks but think they probably have not reached their "ceilings" and are still adapting to the PWHL.

Dave Flint to Seattle? Wow!

Hailey Salvian wrote in The Athletic that as of the expansion draft night, Vancouver and Seattle have received more than 10,000 season-ticket deposits total, per the PWHL. The league also announced this week that free agency for players on expiring contracts will open on Monday 6/16 at 9am ET. The entry draft is Tuesday 6/24 at 7pm ET in Ottawa; 199 players have entered, and 48 will be selected by the 8 teams in 6 rounds.

Draft order is still partly unknown. NY has first pick overall, and the already-existing teams will line up in reverse order of final 2024-25 standings.

The PWHL has announced the draft order and broadcast details -
"The order of selection for the first round of the 2025 PWHL Draft is as follows:
1. New York Sirens (Most Draft Order Points in ‘Gold Plan’)
2.Boston Fleet (Non-Playoff Team)
3. Toronto Sceptres (Lowest Ranked Playoff Semifinalist)
4. Montréal Victoire (Highest Ranked Playoff Semifinalist)
5. Ottawa Charge (PWHL Finalist)
6. Minnesota Frost (PWHL Champion)
7. PWHL Vancouver*
8. PWHL Seattle*
"*A random draw determined the first-round order of selection between expansion teams Seattle and Vancouver. The two expansion teams will alternate positions in all subsequent rounds of the Draft...."
The selection order depending on playoff results is a bit different than I expected from the last entry draft. This one, unlike this year's expansion draft, also will not be a snake draft.

The tv crew for the first 3 rounds will be Kenzie Lalonde, announcing the draft, along with Cheryl Pounder, Dave Starman, and Rob Pizzo.

The signing window will pause on Friday June 27 at 2pm ET and resume on Tuesday July 8 at 9am ET.

Thanks for all of the info that you're sharing. Don't know about others, my my lack of a response comes from having nothing to add, not from lack of interest. Appreciate you taking the time to update us.
I'm glad that you enjoy the updates. I enjoy tracking what's happening in the league, and hearing what everyone thinks when you write here, too. Wishing I was seeing more NY games. It is a 2-3 hour commute to Newark, NJ depending on traffic.

It seems like recent growth in girls' hockey, at a faster rate than at other levels/gender, is driven by the PWHL in part and other women's sports; and that of course affects the women's college game. So, maybe there is something for everyone with the PWHL, if you already follow women's college hockey.

Oddly enough, Ottawa is the only team not to have signed or extended any free agents. They have a very small roster for next season so far. Even NY has signed Jincy Roese to their blue line and extended Taylor Girard at forward.
