MLB 2025: The Dodgers vs The Field

Didn't some college hockey tournaments do this? The ones which had five teams make it to the final weekend, so they had 4 vs. 5, effectively giving 1, 2, and 3 byes into the semifinals. And this would obviously be after the first round.
That’s more of just a play-in game. I couldn’t find a bracket but Kep made it sound like a system where a team played in the first round, then got a bye in the second round to the third round. Although I guess that’s what you’re describing but it would have to work like that in a situation where your next round isn’t divisible by 4.

The WCHA final five did this. 4 and 5 had a play-in game on Thursday night, then semis began Friday. A common chant by the winning team on Thursday night was “Here til Saturday.” clap clap clap clap clap.

This was true due to another Final Five quirk, a third place game.
CCHA also had a similar setup with two play-in games on Thursday and a third place game Saturday.

That third place game was begrudgingly nicknamed the Walt Kyle Invitational with the frequency the 'Cats played in it.

The 2006 Gophers lost to the Badgers in the third place game. It flipped the two in the PWR, dropping MN to the second overall seed and a matchup with Holy Cross in the tournament.

That reminds me…
