Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

Buncha fuckin' commies in charge at Walmart. (Freepers, probably)

My neighbors are all Lefties, minorities or immigrants so they have issues with all of this ;)
Mine are all retired or laid off from 3M or teachers so same
On my right (facing the house from the street) is a divorced, fifty-something female, diehard MAGAt. She's a buyer for some local auto supplier, and something of a crunchy conservative. LOOOOVES all things The Donald and tinfoil conspiracies. No vaccines, has one daughter who's an RN and is also anti-vax (and vegan! - her and the hubs and their 2 kids 🤪). Other daughter still lives with her, no clue what she does, but frequently leaves in her own car so I assume she's functionally employed. This woman raises her own chickens in the back, yes we get some of the eggs because my wife is blessed (?) with the gifts of gab and patience. I'd sooner eat vulture than deal with her, but it beats paying $5 for eggs every week.

On my left is an unlicensed (and thus, uninsured!) GC who graduated from the local HS 25+ years ago. He still throws occasional summertime house parties with his old buddies at age 45 (all of whom are still local, natch). He is actually a decent carpenter and plumber, and importantly does have a network of other contractors we can bounce quotes off of. He probably doesn't bother voting, and I'd be shocked if he cares who's running the country as long as he doesn't see the bottom of his bottles of Tito's.

He was using it at his vacation home in rural northern Michigan, in an area where there still isn't enough demand to run fiber. But another option became available, so he immediately switched.
The funny thing is that there has been a HUGE push where you went to school to get rural fiber. Our niece in Tapiola now has really good service. And both camping tours of the UP we saw a bunch of fiber being put next to the road. But I’m sure most will still think Elmo is cool.

I've heard about this and I'm not surprised. The MTEC business incubator and local COCs probably lobbied Lansing to get money for it during COVID.

My best friend from MTU still lives up there. For several years pre-pandemic, he worked for the local Shorewaves WISP. They paid him to get certified to climb towers to install their equipment. Right before COVID, he moved on to a gov't contractor job doing IT and InfoSec for a Houghton-area DoD contractor that paid much better. Unfortunately, he's currently looking for work after getting DOGE'd in the civvy workforce cuts.

My uncle's place is in the northern LP, about 10-15 miles from the Bridge.

Cox Communications and Charter announce a planned merger that would create a single company retaining CCI branding, and would overtake Comcrap as the #1 overall BISP and CTV provider by revenue.

Speaker Johnson says insider trading should continue to be legal for members of Congress because they need to supplement their $174,000 annual income, which has not increased since way back in 2009.

Hmmm. When is the last time Congress increased the federal minimum wage?

United plans a return to 4 cabins of service on some international flights next year, as "Polaris Studio" will effectively serve as a First Class cabin they will introduce on biz-heavy overseas routes such as Singapore and London. 8 suites with doors and caviar service. 😏🙄

Given the (I assume) 5-figure price and target clientele, I'm thinking it should also include the opportunity to personally beat and drag a coach passenger off the plane, David Dao style, for sport.
