Dump Term 2, 1.01: Sleep Now in the Fire

Problem is, packing the court and overturning Citizens United doesn’t undo the gerrymandering in red states. It doesn’t get rid of the Electoral College. It doesn’t prevent a Republican administration coming along and undoing everything that wasn’t nailed down. It doesn’t fix the structural problems.

That’s the biggest problem with some of y’all, thinking patchwork jobs are real solutions when we need to be going for the throat. Until we can slam the door and definitively say “NO!”, then any changes made mean absolute dick.
No of course it doesn't. But getting the money out of politics goes a very long way, which was my point. And of course it doesn't prevent a republican from undoing it. The point is that it removes the insane advantage they've effectively stolen over the last 15 years.

The unfucking of the district lines and whatnot comes when you actually have a court that rules those illegal as it should be. The only reason they're in place is because we've got a court filled with zealots.

And I am sorry, accuse me of freaking out if you like, but Whitmer deserves whatever crap she gets on this one. She can claim she was fighting for Michigan all she wants and she can whine she was blindsided but she is smarter than all that. She put herself in a position to be played and did so because she did exactly what we all have been saying no one should be doing. (taking audience with the King) I think this post says it correctly:

Whether she meant to or not, she gave him legitimacy by being there. Same as when the Union Leaders pull that move. She isn't Zelenskyy begging for help in a war...and he showed way more spine when he was in DC than she did.

I like Whitmer a lot, but she now looks like another Democrat who has no idea how to meet the moment. Now when she rails against him the easy response is "yet you went there trying to get something from him" and fair or not, it looks bad. If Walz did this I would be ticked off.
Agreed. you don't work with Nazis. You fight them. This was such a self-own I have lost so much respect for her. You take them to court and when you lose there you take your case to the American people.

A lot of folks are doing it. And every time someone does it they pay for it dearly. Democrats just go to stop working with any of them, period. They need to draw lines in the sand and say we're not working with you anymore unless you meet this minimal standard.

My guess is that she thought that as a lame duck gov, she could quietly negotiate with Trump on behalf of Michigan and leave the fighting words to the 2026 candidates. While her tactic may have worked if this were 2018, her tactical mistake was assuming she wouldn't be used somehow while in DC and have it go public (a photo op in this case).

Her strategic mistake here is worse. She thought she could negotiate with a known terrorist who doesn't care what happens to anyone but himself.

Once the GOP proved they were anti-democratic terrorists we should have nixed them as a party. It would have been a tough pill but they're fucking Nazis FFS. The protections for political participation only apply to those who will continue our democratic institutions. If your plan is to use elections to end elections, fuck you, go to prison.
Who is we? Your fat ass isn't going to do anything.

Gee, Columbia caved and Trump is continuing to take their money anyway. If only there was precedent for Trump welching on deals, especially in Manhattan...

This is the ultimate example of why Whitmer screwed up. Even tacitly bending the knee doesn't save you...in fact he seems to punish you more for being weak willed.

Every Democrat should look at what Zelenskyy did and make that the baseline.

Whelp, went and looked at my 457 retirement account. Increased at 11% in 2024 and was on the same trajectory in January and held steady in February, but since March 1, I am down 8%. Not as bad as some, I guess, but still not happy about it.

The U.S. had spent months preparing new restrictions on shipments of H20 HGX GPUs — the highest-performing AI GPUs still permitted for sale in China — and those measures were set to take effect as early as this week, according to NPR, which cites two sources. The change in course followed a dinner at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, which Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang attended, reportedly at a $1 million admission fee. Shortly afterward, the company reportedly promised to pour more money into U.S.-based AI data centers, a move that helped ease concerns from the administration.
