University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

I'm not sure if having a collection of games like the last three is a good or bad thing. Good that they keep finding ways of course, but bad that they aren't playing well recently

Maine emerges with two points on upset night in Hockey East.

Boston College lost 3-2 to UMass
Boston University lost to Providence 6-3
Lowell lost to Northeastern 2-0

All regulation losses so 0 points for BC, BU and Lowell. Not only tying BC for the top spot, but opening up a six point gap to the third place Terriers. It also means the magic number for clinching a home game for the quarterfinals is down to 8. Maine could clinch it as early as next weekend at Connecticut, but probably the following weekend vs Vermont at home.

I’m happy they averted disaster tonight and found a way, AGAIN. I’d appreciate a game where I’m not pacing around for the last 10 minutes.

I’m reminded of a famous quote “the University of Maine doesn’t accept ties just like it doesn’t accept losses”. These guys have what it takes but they’ve gotta find a way to score.

BC goes to Amherst tomorrow night.....not an easy place to play or win.

Maine needs a better showing tomorrow night, but credit to the veterans (and Boija) for willing them to 2 points. UNH had a great game and the Alfond was dead….until it wasn’t

One thing hurting maine offensively since the CT series (imo) is their inability to skate it up through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone, too much dumping, and the play up through the neutral zone is too much just up the boards. Its a slow transition and every now sees it on tape so it's very predictable to defend against.

Thought they really missed Chabrier tonight.
Didnt care too much for the lines tonight, things didnt seem to click.

Need a big dominate win tomorrow.
Boys are probably pretty bruised up, unh pounded them on the boards all night. Hat off to Unh for maintaining the physical play.

No, but the word on the street is he looks great. Evidently he has been working really hard and is ahead of schedule in his rehab. I think he wants to get back in the games very badly. He has been in no contact Jersey. So next step would be when he is ready to take the no contact jersey off.

It was all Boija tonight, and has been pretty-much all Boija for the past few weeks.

UNH dominated most of that game. Maine hasn't been able to score worth a shit for weeks now.

I was delighted to steal a point, but something has to change for the better if Maine hopes to contend for the FF.

It's largely solid D, and puck luck /smoke and mirrors right now that is keeping Maine afloat for a high seed.

Maine is getting a steady diet of 1-2-2 neutral zone trap by the opponents last 3 games. It might be how teams can hang in the game with Maine because Maine is too good 5-on-5. So teams want to try negate the 5-on-5 disadvantage with a trap and hope it frustrates Maine and they can get power plays. It worked against Providence because they got 10 minutes of major power play time. Maine should have lost that game if Providence had even an average power play. Tonight against UNH it was a better disciplined effort which essentially turned the game into a stalemate. UNH trapped a lot in the first game, so expect a heavy diet of it again tomorrow. Not pretty, but they evidently need to play that way for their success. It worked pretty good for them tonight. They held Maines shots on goal absurdly low.

Haven't had much offense since Breen went down. Somehow they keep getting points though. I expect lineup changes again tonight.

Side note, Breen and his parents were in the section next to us and he looked irritated all game. Can’t imagine what Barr was like in the locker room.

Hope we get Breen back on the ice for when it matters!

Probably killing him he has to wait it out. I just hope he comes back healthy. It will give a boost when he does even if he centers 4th line to ease him into minutes. Like start centering 4th line then expand his minutes taking extra shifts on another line if he’s up to it type thing. Imagine the whole preseason conditioning has to have eroded so might take him. While to get into full game conditioning.
