UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

I went back and looked at the goals and I think the only one you can find much fault with is the second goal. Even that one it’s tough to tell(courtesy of the horrible camera angle) how much of it was a good shot versus bad goaltending.

One thing I find interesting about Ostman is that by far his best play was when he was basically Maine’s only goalie last year. Some guys just aren’t comfortable competing with a teammate and I wonder if that is part of his issue. With that being said Maine definitely misses Sirota a lot and I think overall the defense has been pretty poor this year.

I completely agree with your post here.

Ostman needs to be benched folks.

He has been having trouble with these high shots all season, short side too on many of them. Im sure coach Alfie sees this.
NO doubt Boija starts tomorrow and its his net until or if he lets it go.

I keep hoping that Ostman's struggles are an aberration but they are happening week after week.....and teams are on to him now.

BS, been watching elbows into heads all season, no calls.
Just the f-ing biased boston refs.

No I've been to 12 games in 4 states and they are calling contact to the head from the body. Elbows they miss often. Your problem is the goalie. I was with two retired AHL/Europe/ECHL and former HE goalies tonight in the end bowl at the barn, we all think he's hurt or not seeing full depth. Maybe right eye?

I just got home from the game. Some thoughts...

The absolute first and foremost reason for this loss was #32 in blue. This game is officially what has put me out on Ostman. He was really bad, plain and simple. In my opinion, three of the goals I would say were "bad goals", and two of them weren't necessarily ones he "should" have had, but they were ones he "could" have had. A goalie on his game for Maine tonight would have allowed a max of two goals, and might have allowed less. I have previously been a defender of Ostman, you can see as such in my posts on this very forum. I'm not sure if he's injured, or psyched out, or had some decline in his ability in the offseason, or what his problem is but he is not right and is hurting the team. He plays nervous currently and does not have confidence in his net. I want to see Bojia tomorrow and for the rest of the season, unless he gets hurt or perfoms similarly to how Ostman has thus far. Boija has much more confidence and poise in the net, I've always though he looks cool and collected when he has been asked to come in.

Secondly, the referees. I really, genuinely, don't like to blame referees for my team losing. And as stated above, they were not the primary cause of the loss. That said, they were absolutely a factor, as is to be expected when playing at Matthews. I don't know what it is, but every single time I see a game there it's always astounding how much home cooking they get from the officials. And it's not just against Maine either, I've seen games there with my dad, an alumnus of fellow Hockey East school that isn't Maine, and it's the same, so hilariously slanted for the home team. I know I can expect a much more evenly referreed game at Agganis, which doubles as a much nicer rink. Anyway, the Poisson play was worthy of a minor, in my opinion, but a major was just obscene. And basically every other call against Maine was garbage, with my favorite being a "holding" call on a basic, run-of-the-mill body check along the boards. And in the opposite direction, the Scott play I mentioned earlier sticks out in particular.

Thirdly, I felt like after the fourth and fifth goal, Maine played like they just wanted to get out of there. I wouldn't necessarily say they "gave up", because if they did they could have easily let up another 2-3 goals and wouldn't have scored the third of their own. But they did play like they had resigned to their fate at that point, and were just waiting for the clock to run out. I would have liked to see a little more grit and fight to at least try and make it interesting and not let NU just coast to the end unresisted.

Finally, I was impressed with the team defense in the first fourty minutes, and on a few of the goals on the major it was the complete opposite, stunningly bad. They couldn't clear the zone in the third to save their skins. Such a dramatic change from literally the same game, when they had previously not given them much of an inch.

In all, immensely frustrating loss, to a team I (naturally) despise, and one you have to hope isn't repeated. I want Bojia the rest of the way, and I think tomorrow's game in Amherst is very important for Maine to win to stay on course and not let the entire weekend go to waste.

Was tracking the lines with the return from injuries for some guys.

1st - Scott, Nadeau, Nadeau
2nd - Breen, Houle, Freel
3rd - Poisson, Scholle, Hanson
4th - Trudeau, Renwick, Calafiore
D pairs
1st - Chabrier, Holt
2nd - Breazeale, Antonacci
3rd - Arnott, Lesakowski
Hopkins - free skater

Anyone else track it similarly?

Been saying that for years. He isn't anything like a FF goalie. (Not that this loss was necessarily on him.)

Play B for the rest of the season, and rely on Ben to bring in a championship caliber goalie going forward.

The hold was a good call. And frankly a smart play, that was one of their only genuine weapons and ya can’t let him walk in with the puck, even from the boards.
I did not see Ben’s elbow to the head, but if they reviewed it and called it a major, I’m gonna assume the refs got it right…at least according to how the ncaa wants it called. (I’m glad our frequent offender has given up his head hunting trait…this was the first game I did not see him deserve at least one contact to the head major)

i saw trips and interferences go uncalled both ways all night.
The only home cooking I saw was Josh getting steam rolled from behind away from the play a few times with no calls

i kinda think it is time for the other Ben to send some tapes to the league office. UConn did it to him and got away with it. BU did it, Lowell did it, UNH did it. (It happened in the dartmouth tourney as well, but). teams were doing that sheeyat to Macklin C and somehow the league was able to put a stop to it,

I was at the game too. I thought Ostman could have done better on the 1st, 2nd, and 5th goals against. The 1st was not playing composed and hugging the post short side. Instead sliding away from the post leaving a gap where the NU forward tucked it in. The 2nd was a shot where he had plenty of time to position himself on a writer from the left face off circle. If you look at his positioning it is back against the post and hunched down even, making it difficult to get the blocker up high. He was playing small. Very strange, he didn’t come out at all to play big. But hugs the post on a shot from the face off dot. Then on that first goal he needed to hug the post since the guy was in on him, yet he was out of position and moving out away from the net. The 5th goal was just a soft 5 hole goal that he should have had since he anticipated that play well, was square to it, just didn’t squeeze the five hole enough and it trickled through. I will say he had a couple nice saves earlier in the game. However, this appears to be average or below average goaltending for hockey east.

They didn’t show the major on replay at the game on the scoreboard. So I assume the officials got it right. What a bad time to take a major. Two of those power play goals Ostman couldn’t be expected to save. Poisson let the team down(3 goals) on a night where Ostman was flopping.

It was disappointing to see the two seniors be the main reasons leading to a loss. Well, Poisson is a 5th year senior.

Oh well, hope for better tomorrow.

It seems like Ostmans struggles is part psychological at this point. In the home games he has started bad, he just seems "off"

It has happened ever since he was injured for a game and came back. I think Ben will do the right thing here and bench him.

LOL....you are boring in your old age.
Level headed after the most important player on the team didn’t play well plus a senior captain took a stupid penalty in the 3rd of a tied game. I agree on the old part ; ) .

This team will be lucky to go .500 the rest of the way if the goaltending continues like this. Not sure what’s going on with Ostman, make the initial save and then flop. How many goals has he scored on himself? Got to be frustrating for him. Hate to see a senior go downhill.

Hopefully the team is fired up for Amherst as that’s going to be tough game also. Protect Boija and not take stupid penalties. I wonder if Poisson plays tonight.?

The pregame lineup had Arnott and Breazeale as a pair

New day, different team..different rink...hopfully it's behind them the sour effects of that 3rd period...now down to business...playing a more discipline type of hockey in that they stay out of the box, especially in the 3rd period...getting better on faceoff wins...and the goaltending needs to rachet it up...clutch saves...and scoring first would not hurt either...but all in all...they know they got there goose cooked last night and can they rebound (??). I trust they will.

For those of you "assuming" that the refs got the 5 min major right....the game is available on demand on ESPN+ if you have it. You might change your minds after viewing it.

Maine wasn't going to win every game down the stretch.....every HE team is desperate for points and you don't just skate into their barn and expect them to roll over. That being said I'd feel a lot better if Maine had some consistent tending in net. We'll see what happens tonight.

100% agree. Barr needs to deal with this if he hasnt. Josh will get hurt.
Larry should ask or Shields bring it up during an interview to see if theres an answer.

Tough game tonight, I predict a loss.
The boys may have lost some of their magic, need to find it again. I still stand with my earlier prediction of 50% down the stretch.
Key problems continue to be bad turnovers around the blue line. Games they play physical and chase pucks hard is when they do well, this has been hit or miss, you can get away with it on lesser teams only. D break outs are not great at times, too many turnovers and blind passes.
I hate to say it but bench Poisson, he has been off this year. Goaltending as everyone here has analyzed is a big problem.
Offensive zone time was great yesterday in 2nd period but lacked scoring, just have to stay physical and keep in the net front.
Breen is the key, he needs to start scoring.

It's obvious the game plan for most teams now is to rough up Josh. The coaching staff and players know it. I'm surprised they haven't said anything as well.

Another thought I have from last night, and from the season more generally, wondering if anyone else agrees or if I'm way off base. I find that the "NB Line" is very hot and cold, inconsistent. I find they are either pinning the opponent in their D zone and generating tons of chances, or they are are the ones getting pinned and can't break out of a paper bag. It just seems to me like most times I find myself thinking "damn, they are really on their heels and stuck in their own end", it's usually the first line who's out there. Not sure how this can be fixed, if it's even an observation that holds any water, but it's something I've found that I personally have noticed.

I think your right, we have been thinking the same now since november.
