Colgate 23-24

Iowa, it's always been that way. There is a smaller number of great female players available than men and they all want to go to the limited number if schools that can get them a NCAA championship or a slot on a national team. What is very interesting though is when schools are able to rise up through the ranks and actually recruit some of the better players from the limited player pool. So Gate, Q, Northeastern, Yale, and this year St Thomas in the WCHA are really the most recent aberrations which I attribute to charismatic coaches attracting a few talented independent types, proving they can win and then being able to recruit more. If you look at the US and Canadian national teams playing in the rivalry series now a very limited number of colleges are represented. Once you get on that trusted list the talent keeps coming. Fargo is all over the Canadian U-18 program and Chelsea Walkland is a rising star in coaching with the US U-18 team. Definitely a method to their madness. All the above leads to few upsets...

Thanks, Oldtimer.
My observation wasn’t just based on one weekend, but throughout the season. Even tonight…

Colgate wins,
Cornell wins,
Yale wins,
UConn wins,
BC UPSETS Vermont, and
Princeton wins.

You have answered my question. Thanks again!

My pleasure. On your list UConn is a team on the rise and Yale this year and Princeton over the last 3-4 years have fallen. Katie Chan as a rising Jr and Sammi Smigliani as a grad student at Cornell and BC respectively are stars in their teams this year showing the depth Gate has as Katie, especially, left for more playing time and she's now a top one or two scorer on Cornell's top line. Those two games will be huge.

Another dominating performance against the Tigers last night. DS had a great game from the jump. Especially fun to see Kas Betinol and Madeline Palumbo two talented and very hard working skaters get their just rewards. Does anyone know the story on why we haven't seen Hannah M other than the second game this year? Is it injury or just a desire to feature Kayle O in her Sr year?

Important game tonight v Q who appeared to handily beat Cornell last night. Looks like our first good measuring stick re tops in ECAC. I doubt we'll move up even if we win tonight but OSU beat Wisc last night 3-0 so depending on their game tonight there may be movement ahead of us in the polls.

If Colgate isn't number 1, are the pollsters even awake? Last 5 games: 4-0 vs Yale; 8-1 vs Darmouth; 10-1 vs Harvard; 7-1 vs Princeton; 4-1 vs Quinnipiac. Only one loss this season, in overtime.

OSU will be No. 1, but would argue Colgate No. 2 and Wisconsin 3. Our success is great, but our toughest league opponents remain. No. 1 PWR in the country is just incredible! Time to go show UMD how it’s done in the East!

TchrBill, I think you are right on the money. We should move up to #2 after OSU sweep of Wisc. We should also be able to beat UMD based on their play so far, but game is in their barn after our having to travel. Coach Crowley (Gate hockey alumna) would love nothing more than to celebrate her Thanksgiving beating us at #2 to raise her own PWR. Should be a good tilt!

Sure enough, #2 with 2 first place votes. I think in 2019 when we lost to Clarkson in the final we ended the season at #2, but I never recall 'Gate getting any first place votes ever. Pretty cool!

Well, we finally got upsets this past weekend...

Ohio State over Wisconsin, 3-0, on Friday,
Ohio State over Wisconsin, 2-1, in OT on Saturday,
Princeton over Cornell, 4-3, on Saturday, and
Maine over Vermont, 3-2, on Saturday.

Three of the four were close, but an upset is an upset, and a win is a win.

While most on here look at polls, I only look at PairWise Rankings (PWR)... even in late November.
Here is where we stand tonight...

#1 Colgate,
#2 Ohio State,
#3 Minnesota,
#4 Clarkson,
#5 Wisconsin,
#6 St. Lawrence,
#7 Minnesota Duluth,
#8 Quinnipiac,
#9 Cornell,
#10 Princeton,
#11 St. Cloud State.

This commentary about upsets has pleased and intrigued me! I noticed here that 'Gate has been #1 in the Pairwise for a while and their #1 ranking started around Oct. 24.

I know as the season goes on the poll may show similar movements to those of the Pairwise. (That final poll of the year is skewed to whoever is champions, though.) Going into this past weekend, Ohio State was already ahead of Wisconsin in PWR. They were 2nd and 4th respectively. It supports your contention that there are few upsets according to PWR! But they may be upsets according to who won at the last meeting of the teams.

As a footnote, this week's USCHO Pairwise has been missing one Minnesota win @ UMD. In the top 20, that win switches up UMD and Quinnipiac. (Per BC Interruption Pairwise by a forum poster.)

If there is a surprise team in the ECAC this year it has to be St Lawrence. We beat them in a preseason scrimmage but since then they have been really solid. We'll find out in early Jan, but that North country trip in early Feb, always a challenge, will be particularly significant this year with Clarkson also playing great. Go Gate beat UMD!

Lol I do/feel the same, but track the PWR since the first week they’re posted.

Colgate well ahead of No. 2 in PWR, which is rare to have such a gap. That must mean there is a reason coaches are hesitant to rank Colgate No. 1 in the polls. Can’t say I blame them. Colgate does not play teams like Wisconsin every day; our poor showing at home in last year’s NCAA tournament proved why we are always ranked behind the WCHA. If we played OSU or Wisconsin 10x each, how many times would we win? This year, probably more than usual. We can beat up on hapless Harvard, but need to put our money where our mouth is. Other than Colgate, possibly Clarkson and *maybe* Cornell/Qpac, the ECAC is revealing itself to be (perhaps) a bit overrated. Jury is still out on Clarkson IMO; not sure they’ve played the toughest schedule and despite their 15-0-2 record, their PWR is only 79.79 and supports that assumption.

This weekend's games between ECAC and WCHA ranked teams Colgate at Minnesota Duluth (2 games), St. Lawrence at Ohio State (2 game), and Minnesota vs Cornell (1 game) should provide some exciting hockey. The results will likely have a big impact on the PWR rankings of the two leagues.

Other than the 2 games vs OSU, Colgate & Clarkson have played largely an equivalent schedule.

Clarkson has played Merrimack x2, BC x2, UVM x2, and RMU x2. Colgate has played none of them. Not sure how you get equivalent out of that.

As for the PWR, I take USCHO at face value and there is a large disparity right now of 23 pts between #1 and 4 which is a large gap.

Sweep is very realistic this weekend. I don’t believe in home advantage for any sport. Good teams win at home, but better teams win on the road.

I didn’t say “identical”. I’d say that BC and UVM (Clarkson NC opponents) are roughly “equivalent” (same competitive level) to PSU and Mercyhurst (Colgate NC opponents). My point is the competitive level of each team’s opponents thus far are largely the same. OSU being the outlier.

Anyone have any idea how to watch UMD series this weekend? It appears to be on the Big 10 Network but when you get there there is no UND option as they are not a member school...
