BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

Moved back to #1 in the PWR. That was courtesy of Canisius beating AIC of all things. (Quinnipiac has 2 wins against AIC). As of now, 4 eastern teams are the top 4. I know much will probably change over the next few months, but if it ended like that Maine and BC would be going west. Those wins against Maine were huge. The BC series will also be huge, as well as that opening round Beanpot game. I’ll be heading up for the BC home and home this year -can’t wait to see these 2 go at it!

That none of the teams at the top had games and the PWR shuffled around the top again tells me it's still far too early to use the PWR for anything. I mean 'ooh fun we're on top again, simple math' and all, but it doesn't mean much until we're through the January/February gauntlet.

I think most know this, but it’s fun to track it. Nothing is certain until the selection show in March.

Exactly. I do admit I think about the PWR quite a bit. But it is significant to be at the top at the break. Unless we start losing massive numbers of games, it’s just about assured we make the NCAA tournament historically. Seeding will of course depend on that second half record. BU traditionally has very good second halves. I really like our position on gaining at least a 2 seed when it is all said and done.

I think the strength of the OOC games for Hockey East is a part of the buoyancy for us, BC, and Maine. In that sense, yeah it's significant.

But I don't get too excited about it either inasmuch as it's not a predictive model. We play and win solid in the second half, we'll be fine. I don't expect them to win out, but let's give it a go! The BC tilts are gonna be epic.

It's absolutely useable at this point in the year as a barometer of about where teams rank. OOC schedules are nearly complete, total games played have aligned across leagues, and there's enough games played in total that the statistics are meaningful. The reason BU and QU flipped is because their RPIs are that close - we're .0036 percentage points ahead. That's all that happened, there wasn't some major statistical sway. AIC split with a bad Canisius team - QU previously beat AIC, so those results were enough to bump QU's RPI down a few thousandths of a point.

Barring teams going on unexpected runs or significantly underperforming, there's a lot less significant PWR movement in the second half than you'd think.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! Question - what’s the difference between PWR (where BU is #1) and power ratings ( where BU is #2)?

It is what they used to call KRACH. It is a computer ranking they feel is a more accurate ranking of teams than the Pairwise.

Wow, we have a game tomorrow! Will we struggle from the layoff without some of our big guns, or do we really take care of these guys? Need the veteran players to step up and perform.

Good win - got through the “world juniors” game. It didn’t ever seem in doubt.

I love Shane Lachance down low. Lots of skill and great instincts. He is turning into a very valuable piece of our offense.

Good strong win - nice to see the balanced scoring. Strong game for Frechette.

How many medals will the three "juniors" bring back from Sweden? Would be cool if they each won one.
