MLB 2022: Playing Ball, But Is Anyone Still Watching?

Mets announcer Howie Rose has been talking about Indians pitcher Justin Bieber all night. It's a bit like the latter days of Ralph Kiner.

If the A’s lose tonight they will tie for the second worst start thru 50 games in history at 10-40 with the 1932 Red Sox. Only worse team would be the 1904 Senators at 9-41.

1899 Cleveland Spiders were 9-41. Their next 50, they went 8-42. Their next 50, they went 3-47. And then they disbanded.

The list I had only included the “modern” era. The Spiders should really be excluded from all the futility records. They were the product of an owner having two teams in the league and trading everyone to the better team. They outlawed owning multiple teams as a result. I’m not sure why that wasn’t a rule to begin with, since it doesn’t take much foresight to see that an owner would stack one team if another started to falter.

Nationals were 19-31 before going on to win a World Series. That and the AL Central being trash are the only things keeping my hope alive for a Twins playoff appearance.

Tucker Barnhart, a backup catcher, threw nothing but 45-mph* Eephus pitches in the ninth at Wrigley in a 10-1 blowout.

He threw a scoreless inning.

* One was 39.

SD fans get the games free on MLB TV thru Sunday, then will get a discounted rate. And MLB is negotiating with different cable companies to get their games on "different cable channels." So they would just open a separate channel temporarily? Been awhile since I've seen that. I think that's how the early Fox Sports Plus games were handled before they made it a full time channel.

Unfortunately Detroit doesn't appear to be a market Diamond is looking to dump.

Mets pitching faced 28 batters in their 2-0 win tonight. Allowed a walk and 2 singles, but got a double play and one caught stealing. No Philly reached second.

Yeah we are stuck with Bally since Detroit is one of the profitable markets they own while also holding the streaming rights. Detroit will likely be one of the last to get onto mlb.tv without local blackouts.

What kinda surprised me was Bally wants to dump the Twins (Comcast (I think maybe Charter, or both) refuses to raise prices to meet Bally's demands. But, they're fine with the Brewers over on the Bally North alternate channel Bally Wisconsin.
