2022 Beijing Olympics: Don't Mention the Slaves

Cause it was only added so that the US might have a chance to get more medals in the games, instead of getting their a55es kicked like they always have in the more traditional Olympic winter sports, like say cross country skiing?

These X-Games sports were mainly added to get the young X-Games fans to pay attention to the Winter Games. The Winter Olympics TV ratings for the younger generation were nosediving pretty badly, until they added the X-Games sports.

Why is snowbaording any more ludicrous than curling or even short-track skating? It's a winter sport, only the best in the world make the event (yes I know but you get the overall point) and the competition can be quite compelling at times.
Because:

a) "It's not a traditional event!" for some reason matters to Boomers. Neither is curling but everyone seems to go gaga for it so it gets a pass I guess.

b) America bad. Because it's wrong for America to dominate an event but completely ok for countries like Norway or the Netherlands or Germany to dominate events like XC Skiing and Speed Skating. FTR, the US has won 31 of 120 total Snowboarding medals or 25.8%, Norway has won 121 of 508 XC Skiing medals or 23.8%, the Netherlands have won 121 of 569 Speed Skating medals or 21.3%. How about Austria's 121 out of 461 Alpine Skiing medals or 26.2%? Or German Lugers winning 81 out of 141 medals or 57.4%?

This. And only this.
Actually that already happened in 2002 when they changed the schedule so it alternated days with Short Track instead of having Figure Skating being one week and Short Track the next. The Team competition just adds three more days to broadcast at the beginning of the games.

It added broadcast days. That's what really matters. :-)

Speaking of which, isn't it kind of odd how many sports now start competition before the Opening Ceremonies? And ironically, no sport is allowed to go beyond the Closing Ceremonies. Even if it means cancelling a competition if weather caused a lot of delays.

Idk why Nike thought it would be a good idea to
make Canada’s jerseys red and black with no white to contrast. Numbers show up a little better on their reds than with their blacks, but it’s still
not great.

Halfway through the opening ceremonies on DVR and NBC has already done their usual job fucking up matching the video and audio.

Reminds me of Ohio State women's illegal jerseys from a few years ago. Black Jersey with dark red numbers. They started the Saturday game of the series on the penalty kill because of them. They were warned after the Friday game, but had only brought one jersey to Minneapolis.

Given that there's a long history of judged events, I have no problem with snowboarding, or even the judged skiing events, even if I have no interest in watching them. Watching some of the ice dancing, though- how in the world did it take so long to add ballroom dancing? They are the same thing.

But the concept of team figure skating I just can't get. It gives an advantage to the teams who really have no need to an advantage (skating early in competition is a massive advantage when it comes to the individual events). It's like giving tax cuts to the rich. Given that, it's interesting that it was voted in by enough of the OC's- since all but a handful are not advantaged by it. Should be more like gymnastics where this phase should be part of the main-ish event.

The X-Games events are funny- as they have that every year, as if it's a massive event. But seeing the opening round of one of the events- you can see the nerves are very different than X Games- since it was just a few weeks ago.

So into the important games for this board- anyone concerned that the US Women's team isn't scoring anywhere near Canada? Lots and lots and lots of shots, but relatively few goals. And they are playing really well- controlling the play in a pretty dominant manner.

Yes.

Canada’s looked like the better team so far and not just because of the goals. The US is dominating the stat sheet about as well as Canada is, but doesn’t look as crisp. Canada’s looked faster, better puck movement, going 100% from puck drop.

But at the same time it can be difficult to piece together these pool play games. US-Canada is almost a different sport compared to the other matchups.

The quarterfinals will be interesting. With the expansion, the US and Canada will now be playing pool B teams. If China beats Sweden they’re guaranteed a spot. China-Canada would be… ugly.

Thanks for the details, I've not yet seen Canada play. But I very much agree that the US does not look as crisp- a couple of slam dunk goals could have been had the pass been a little better and the stick was on the ice. Let alone some really great shot opportunities lost because the pass was not quite right. Hopefully, they can get it together- but the next three days will be tough with consecutive games.

Apparently you aren't aware of what they have done to UO and Seattle the last 20 years.

Because:

a) "It's not a traditional event!

Yes.

Also: Curling was included in the program of the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1924 in Chamonix as a non-medal event.

b) America bad.

Only if you have to listen to our broadcasters. I start out every Olympics neutral. By the first commercial break, I am actively rooting against every American athlete. Fuck the jingoistic garbage. If I lived in Toronto I'd probably feel the same way about Canada, but I live here, so America bad.

Jesus fuck, the vocal fry from these announcers is awful even for Gen X*. At least they sent Gumbel and Costas to a farm upstate.

* Which does not exist.

This is also happening with old movies that have been digitized.

If I wind up longing for the days of analog my complete transformation into The Guy will be complete. :-(

No medals = not a real event, otherwise we get to talk about “traditional events” like tug of war, polo, or military patrol. Curling became a medal event in 1998, the same year Snowboarding became a medal event. It’s only part of the Olympics because the Canadians pushed it for decades. It’s probably one of the reasons no one wants to host the Winter Olympics anymore because curling is a very high cost event to put on.

It’s 2022, you can watch any event online without NBC commentary very easily.
