It isn't the right I am worried about. It is the middle and even the left who refuse to believe the ugliest things possible about their friends and neighbors. It is embodied in Biden repeating yet again that he finds Mitch McConnel a good faith actor. Just like Boebert and MTG don't throw things out there that none of their supporters agree with, Biden doesn't say something like that because none of the 80 million people who voted for him are on a different page.

Biden wants to reassure voters that even though things are bad now, our institutions are strong and will prevail. God love the people he is speaking to, because I know there are plenty of good, kind-hearted Americans who actually do want everyone to succeed, but that message is false. It isn't a lie, because maybe Biden and millions of Americans believe it, but it is still false.

The right is a lost cause and if they were all vaporized tomorrow the world should rejoice. But Mike Pence's lifeless body swinging from a hastily erected gallows on January 6th might have shocked people into the actions that are necessary, and would be easier to undertake when ALL OF US on the right side of history are pulling together.

The political instincts of the ruling class are now insufficient to navigate a crisis. God knows the liberal elites of Weimar were smarter, braver, and more creative than today's Democrats, and they failed. Why would Pelosi, Schumer, and the conveyor belt of safe, well-scrubbed centrists churned out by the top tier schools' credentialing of the children of upper middle class New York Times readers be expected to do any better?

Maybe if there was a true working class Left in this country they would be mounting more than a dawdling, denialist Prevent Defense.
