America, we got lucky. On the laundry list of things Donald Trump has been terrible at, transforming our country into a fascist autocracy was only the latest.

The president of the United States tried to stage a coup to remain in power.

Yes, seeing that in print is a bit jarring, to say the least. Yet that is, in fact, precisely what happened.

The president of the United States, after losing reelection by 7 million votes, riled up his cult-like followers for months with lies about massive voter fraud, culminating with a “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House urging them to march on the Capitol just as Congress set about to formally certify Joe Biden as the winner.

The plan was as simple as it was outrageous: His violent thugs would intimidate his own vice president into violating the Constitution and rejecting tens of millions of legitimate votes in states Biden had won, preventing him from reaching the required 270 electoral votes and throwing the election to the House of Representatives, where Donald Trump would win under the one-vote-per-state rule.

That Trump had placed the life of endlessly loyal Mike Pence in grave danger, along with hundreds of members of Congress and their staffs, remains an underappreciated element of the day.

This was a president who refused to condemn right-wing domestic terrorists, defending, among others, the Illinois teen accused of murdering two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with an assault rifle, while more generally encouraging his supporters to use violence. During one campaign debate with Biden, he famously told the racist, fascist Proud Boys to “stand by” — which, of course, they did, and several months later took part in the attack on the Capitol.

This was a president who kowtowed to dictators and right-wing authoritarians the world over, from Kim Jong Un in North Korea to Recep Erdogan in Turkey to Xi Jinping in China to, his favorite, Vladimir Putin in Russia, all the while picking senseless fights with democratically elected allies. This was a president who started a needless trade war that hurt farmers, manufacturers and consumers alike because he fundamentally misunderstood how international trade works and could not be bothered to learn.

This was a man who was corrupt to his core, and solicited and accepted tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars from both domestic and foreign interests through his golf courses and hotels, primarily the absurdly overpriced one just five blocks from the White House. (This is something that truly did not get the attention it deserved. Our president was essentially taking bribes. Had they given him briefcases filled with cash, that clearly would have been seen as a crime. Yet how was this different?)

This was a man who was endlessly dishonest, every single day, about everything, from the trivial to the gravely serious. This, in and of itself, should have been disqualifying. The president of the United States, after all, works for all Americans, and we have a right not to be lied to all the time.

As for his policies, he never really had any, apart from building a wall and keeping out brown-skinned foreigners. In fact, that is the main reason his enablers loved him so much. He was truly their useful idiot, a rubber stamp for the regulatory rollbacks, the tax cuts, the right-wing judges they had always dreamed of. This is why they were so irritated with the “Never Trump” conservatives. The enablers could not understand why the others wouldn’t just get with the program, keep quiet and grab all the goodies while the grabbing was good.

The sanctity of elections is a foundational, nonnegotiable principle in a constitutional republic. Trump showed that he absolutely did not accept that principle, and tens of millions of Americans were eager to follow his lead.

The fundamental question is whether the Republican Party even wants to reform itself, or whether it has gone completely over to the idea that winning is everything, even if that means ending American democracy.

I can't do the article full justice here because it's lengthy but it's a wonderful summation of how dangerous things have become, how close we came to losing it all, and yet how close we remain at the precipice if more Americans don't finally stand up and shout, "ENOUGH!!".

A Paris court on Monday found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence.

The 66-year-old politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.

The court said Sarkozy is entitled to request to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet.

This is the first time in France’s modern history that a former president has been convicted of corruption.

Sarkozy’s co-defendants — his lawyer and longtime friend Thierry Herzog, 65, and now-retired magistrate Gilbert Azibert, 74 — were also found guilty and given the same sentence as the politician.

The court found that Sarkozy and his co-defendants sealed a “pact of corruption,” based on “consistent and serious evidence”.

The court said the facts were “particularly serious” given that they were committed by a former president who used his status to help a magistrate who had served his personal interest. In addition, as a lawyer by training, he was “perfectly informed” about committing an illegal action, the court said.

Around 300 people have been arrested due to their actions during the insurrection at the Capitol. How many of them are not just average, everyday idiots? All of them? Prosecutors better be throwing everything they can at them to see what sticks and more importantly, to get information from as many people as possible. If all we get out of this is a couple hundred nobodies serving a year in jail, a handful of cops losing their jobs (4 of the 5 active duty cops arrested so far have been fired or resigned) and nothing else, we have failed.

This was not a low-level, unorganized disturbance that just spiraled out of control for a couple of hours. People serving in congress were complicit. Law enforcement officials other than at the "patrol" level were involved. Frankly, I think too many people in power are afraid to confront what they know is there.

Some of us know. The next time they could succeed.

These are the brownshirts holding guns on members of the Reichstag during votes. They all have to go to jail with their leaders.

This has been slowly brewing in America since 1980, if not 1964. It's been 50 years getting to the point where Italy and Germany lost. But it is here.

They know this is their last stand. The erosion of white rural derp is accelerating and they can no longer rule in a democracy. The vote suppression and the heavy lean on an anti-democratic electoral college system is the only way a minority of uneducated reactionaries can still win anything outside the blood red states and they know it.

The GOP came to the crossroads of democracy and power and they made a hard right into power.

Lot of things "can't happen here" over the last 40 years. America doesn't "do" things anymore. Can't. Costs too much. Takes too much time. Too much dedication. We need it cheap, and right now.

Of course it CAN happen here. It isn't like there is some physical property in the universe preventing it. But it WON'T happen here because not enough people have the stomach for it. If it was going to happen, it already would have. trump was more corrupt, more criminal and more evil than Nixon, yet survived his full term and two impeachments. 1-6 was more of a threat to this country than 9-11 yet 95% of one half of the political power in this country either wants to brush it under the rug, or AGREED with it.

These people are Nazis. They do not respect democratic government, they want power and never mind how. They are cheap thugs with 60 million supporters with a toddler's mindset.

I'm speaking strictly about the specifics of high ranking or powerful people (like the former French president) actually paying like normal people for their crimes. trump will never be shackled to another prisoner on their way to federal PMITA prison. We all want to see that, but we aren't going to.

And you don't have to remind me we could have seen tanks in the streets. I was one who actually believed we were going to see that. I still believe it is extremely possible, depending on what happens in elections in 2022 and 2024. We are nowhere near out of the woods. And that is counting on elections being able to prevent tanks in the streets. So far so good but don't rest yet.
