POTUS 46.10: A New Hope

The solution is to tax everything the same.

And to have a wealth tax.

The only credit that should exist is for dependents. All capital gains should be treated as regular income above a certain income threshold. Pass-through schemes, trusts, etc. used to hide money should be outlawed and if/when you are caught abusing them you ought to lose everything you failed to report, plus stiff penalties on your next tax bill. Offshore inversions done to evade corporate taxes should be outlawed. Mortgage interest deductions should only apply to first-time homebuyers, or should at least be capped much lower for non-homesteaded real estate purchases. You want that lake house or ski condo? You'd better really want it.

Yes to all of this.

Fair enough. I accept your correction ;-)

And the regulators are intentionally hamstrung, usually by Republicans but there are slime Dems who are sponges for their rich donors, too.

They deliberately cut staffing and budgets so investigators can't cover their caseloads. What if the robbers controlled the cops' budgets?

I think there should be some credit for non-profit donations. But at the same time, a crack down on those same organizations to make sure they are what they claim they are.

Other than that, can I cut and pasts your paragraph to my representation? ;-)

Fine, but only for registered non-profits that are subject to regular audits. I should get no tax favors for giving $50,000 to a church that will use 80% of it to pay salaries, construct more buildings, and host more potlucks with raisin potato salad.

Then you will exclude >90% of churches in the US. Most churches are just "clubhouses" with a paid staff of caretakers, with 90% or more of the budget going to salaries, utility bills, and operations. I was the youth representative to my church's board of directors (2000+ member, "downtown" Methodist church), and we had to fight like heck to get our "Missions" budget (which included proselytizing efforts as well as, you know, actually helping people) *up* to 5% of our total revenue.

Oh - and....I don't disagree with you at all.

Beg pardon? Is this any good or is it another whiter than white thing?

Every Midwestern family has at least one family member whose signature dish comes from a 1950's cookbook when it was mandatory every dish included at least two of mayonnaise, fruit, or nuts. Bonus points if all three are included.

What makes it "German"? I tend to agree -- whenever somebody brings this to a company picnic I like it.

Potato salad probably began in Germany centuries ago, I've had a few different variations of "Kartoffelsalat" in restaurants when I've been over there. However it was usually served room temperature and had a mayo-based dressing.

I suspect the American concept of "German" potato salad is used merely to differentiate the chilled mayo/egg versions that everyone here serves at backyard BBQs from the warm bacon/vinegar version. You know, pork and pickled stuff being fairly accurate German stereotypes.
