Which is problematic because the military is incredibly pro-Bolsonaro (which I know you know). The Biden admin has already started the process publicly (and I'm sure very much behind the scenes as well) to ensure a transition happens.

They definitely are but they may not be willing to kill civilians to keep him around. They can wait for a less divisive person.

The Brazilian military always wants stability. In the past, they would coup a Leftist because they knew the US would destabilize any democratically-elected Leftist government in the hemisphere. In this case, with the Dems in charge, and Bolsanaro being a complete nutter, the military is very likely to pass on saving this rat turd even though he's a Righty.

I did not know that. I thought they had always been occupied by the Japanese the way we did with, say, North Dakota.

Did Kepler know the White House held a 70th birdthday party for duke ellington? And Nixon played hbd on the piano for him??

So in this war between Ukraine and Russia, millions of people have fled their countries- more for Ukraine than russia.

I wonder what will it take for the people to return? Whoever leads either country will really, really need to set up a country that attracts their former citizens back. Given how things were progressing, it *seems* that Ukraine will be more capable- even with massive change in russia. But will it be enough?

I'd be curious to see the statistics, but I would think that refugees almost never return home once they've resettled in the country that accepts their refugee status. Even if their home country were safe again, the cost of returning vs. assimilating in the host country ends up being too great for many of them unless they are forced to return due to visa issues or a criminal record. And the Russian draft dodgers will almost assuredly face a summary trial and prison time if they return, no matter who is in charge.

Me, too- but a video I watched this morning suggests that the refugees that have left Ukraine are in the multi millions. Which means the long term effects will be worse for them even looking at the young people leaving russia.

What will remain of Ukraine's infrastructure? Let's say Russia does an about face and stops now, today. It will be years before the country is rebuilt.

Russia is a terrorist state.

Russia is a terrorist state.

It will be faster than England was able to rebuild. Especially since there are a ton of countries very happy to trade grain for parts.

The West will rebuild Ukraine to (1) entice them to join the alliance against Russia, (2) exploit Western taxpayers by skimming the profits from reconstruction and cycling them back to the personal accounts of Western owners (see Iraq War), and (3) ensure Ukraine does not commit to an economic model which, if successful, would serve labor and threaten global capitalist feudalism (see Marshall Plan, Four Asian Tigers).

All of these projects entail the personal sacrifice of the Western middle class and the victimized nation's poor to enrich the Western plutes and the victimized nation's Quislings. This is how the American imperialist model works. It is, to be fair, a lot less mean than the Belgian, German, and Spanish ones, and morally equivalent to the British, Dutch, and French ones.

I would love a modern Marshall Plan. It's not like China wouldn't be making their own pitch as well.

China is even more naked aggressive and self-serving than we were. For a subtle people they still do international financial extortion really poorly. They need their equivalent of Bretton Woods, the IMF, and the World Bank to really suck all the profit out of the developing world while claiming to be acting as a philanthropic angel.

The question: where's the money going to come from? The American middle class have been hollowed out by the perpetuation of Reaganomics for forty years. The only way to do it might be to tax the rich 99%, and the rich have shown they will literally use their goons to end democracy when threatened with a raise in their tax rates of 5%.

China would give them the money to rebuild their infrastructure, run the construction projects, then take it all over when they failed to pay back the loan.

And then stop paying because they are broke. People got to remember China doesn't have any money its all a friggin house of cards...
