I sometimes wonder what the point is. It doesn't matter if you hit Moscow in 5 minutes or 23. Once they're launched on a trajectory towards the North Pole, it's pretty much over.

Well, time to target is a big deal - having a shorter time to react might make massive retaliation less likely (maybe?). Also, faster missiles are harder to shoot down by point defense systems. That's why they're dangerous to aircraft carriers.

Not with nuclear subs.

Even relatively a "minor" nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan would have horrific consequences. One study said that exchange could kick up enough dirt to block the sun for five years

We already have enough issues with shooting down the current family of missiles. And certainly wouldn't be able to do it in a mass strike. There will never be just one. It's going to be all of them.

edit: oh wait, you're talking conventional. For some reason I thought we were talking nukes. Then yeah, hit them at Mach 30.

I meant both - any ordinance is better served and more likely to hit target when it's delivered faster.

God, is that real?

Meanwhile, I watch about 17 minutes of the Ancient Three news networks a year because they are so dumb, but my god their video and graphical capabilities truly are amazing. If only we could reverse the resource allocation and give the intelligent, deep coverage that level of funding.

I'd say we could change the world, but the sad fact is people want the pap. They vote with their remotes. It's not even that they are utterly incapable of understanding it -- when you meet even the dumbest person, and you talk to them about the things they are passionate about, their attention and curiosity and wile always beam through. They come alive. Talk to a Dumpy about football or guns or fishing and you often get subtle, well-researched, well thought-out comments, and a joy in discussing it.

They just don't want to think about the real news, or science, or economics -- all the things that shape their lives and doom their kids. They want simple explanations, preferably that reinforce their emotional/cultural worldview.

Maybe we just fucked them up way back in school. We turned their curiosity about the world off. And then of course all the people who benefit from their sleepwalking took advantage and did the rest.

Oh god no. Well, maybe, but I pulled that number out of my ass as a joke

The Space Shuttle re-entered the atmosphere at around Mach 25, so it's not like it's never been done. Of course, the air up there is very cold, so the speed of sound is quite a bit lower, too (speed of sound is proportional to the square root of air temperature), so Mach 25 up there is nowhere near the same speed as it would be at sea level.

We likely didn't but someone did. Most likely their parents...

This is fascinating and I am very proud of the DOD taking this tack.

One part of that I would be shocked if it was a recent revelation- the smart phone and info is power part- that was REALLY clearly illustrated during the Arab Spring many years ago. CNN was showing live posts on twitter for a time of that.

Also means the FL GOP has hollowed out the democracy to the extent they feel they literally cannot lose a statewide "election."

Not seeing that, but they have every economic problem ever created is Biden's fault. The worse it gets the better it is for the GOP. They get to remove Disney's powers (should be widely seen as a good thing on both sides), and make a giant show to everyone that the GOP is against big business! They are boldly taking on the giant evil corporation that Disney has become! And people forget that the whole thing happens because Disney stopped their bribes to the GOP. The anti-gay law is just the icing on the evangelical cake.
