  • The USCHO Fan Forum has migrated to a new plaform, xenForo. Most of the function of the forum should work in familiar ways. Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar. We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.

Can we go back to the prior format?

Totally agree. Dedicated mods were great so you knew you were at least heard.

That said, community-based moderation would be best. But use a lighthanded approach I would think. Jup was very good at generally letting the children wear themselves out before issuing several warnings and eventually banning. I only remember a few people getting hard-banned for on-board antics.

I think GPL did a good job running their board, with a few exceptions. Professional trolls over there kind of ruined it. The politics piece was hard. Generally everything was supposed to be apolitical, but like you said, lol at ever returning to that world. Plus it's not what I think this community wants. Generally, keep it civil (in the loosest sense of the word), don't do anything illegal, don't spam, etc.

The part where I think I would disagree with maybe a couple people is what to do with people like Jeb. My personal preference is to let each person decide if they want to see a poster. Ignore is a great feature and just because someone dislikes policy positions or the abrasiveness of east-coast loudmouths that offend our midwest sensibilities ( ; D ) aren't really grounds for banning. What makes this place great is that the lazy trolls are basically batted around for the amusement of everyone else. Lazily banning someone like that kind of defeats the purpose of having a board. When someone goes off the rails and posts truly vulgar crap like Flaggy used to post would almost universally result in banning.

Of course, on paper this is easy to say and evolves on day 2. I firmly believe there's a happy balance to be struck and in small communities, democracy is generally the best approach.

That said, I've been looking into hosts and a couple have stood out:
1. DreamHost
2. Bluehost

These seem like options as well, but would need to look into them more:
3. Hostmonster
4. Pretty much any of the top-rated hosts at https://whdb.com/web-hosting/shared/ or https://whdb.com/web-hosting/vps/

The top two are fairly cheap, both offer everything we would need for a basic phpbb board, both have free ssl certs, and I think the bandwidth and storage plans meet our needs. I don't think we'd grow to the size where we'd need a VPS, but even then, a VPS is fairly cheap to start. The only question I have is how much RAM it would take. 1 GB seems awfully low to start. Bluehost offers one-click phpbb install, which is attractive. Though, DreamHost also has specific guides to setting up the database and site.

I suppose board software would be up for discussion. phpbb seems pretty slick, it's free, and low overhead. The community support seems to be as good as vBulletin. I like the lower overhead interface that phpbb uses. VB seems like it's just too process-heavy (probably to reduce overall bandwidth, but don't really care). phpbb also seems extremely straightforward to install, setup, and manage. The extensions seem easy to implement and it appears to be fairly agnostic between DB, server, etc.

I know during my days at BigSoccer one good moderating function was the ability to ban a user from specific subsections of the board (like a user could be banned from The Cafe for constantly trolling but allowed in the D1 section because they actually contributed there).

We have that on a board I frequent and it works great. They also have dedicated threads in each section for people to post whatever they want. It is like the word association threads on steroids. Keeps the rest of the threads on topic.

Dx,

I agree with everything you said. As long as the ignore function works then that should be the standard. Suspension or banning should be when it gets out of hand and warning is ignored. Jup locking threads also worked and could be implemented.

Bluehost was who I was looking at fwiw. It came recommended by phpbb which is what I was going to use. Super easy to deal with and tons of included features. Vbulletin has fallen out of favor everywhere I look.

I've never liked banning for anything short of threats of violence, doxing, personal harassment, sh-t which is (or should be) also criminal. Other than Flaggy I don't believe I have ever seen anybody do anything on the Cafe that would warrant a complete ban.

But Ignore should always be a user option.

I would be in as well. If thinks go quick here we could maybe start a reddit thread to gather people so there is not an entire loss.

Count me in too!
I have been around for about 20 yrs and this place has kept me sane on more than one occasion. I have NO experience in any of the stuff that you guys are discussing but I would def be in.
Also I have no idea what reddit is except some of you talk about it. How does that work?

I'd like to tag along as well please!

Another forum I'm on upgraded to the newest phpBB, and I like using it.

Reddit is basically the world's largest message board.

It's made up of thousands of different communities called subreddits that range from things as general as "pics" to the very niche.

The downside is it's not really chronological in the sense that we think of message boards. You can sort by posting date of a topic itself, but otherwise the default listing of threads is a combination of recency, number of posts, and popularity (every post can be voted on).

That sounds confusing and like having a a penny in a penny candy store the size of walmart. It took me forever when I first started on here to work it out. I stay out of the DI side- except rarely to find out something. I have learned a LOT in the Cafe threads about stuff I would never have thought to think about. But it is small enough I don't get too sucked in

I hate reddit. Sometimes I will use it to answer a very specific question (it will come up in google searches) but overall it is such a worthless set up. It reminds me of how IMDB used to be. (might still be for all I know) message boards are much smoother and just flow better.

FB used to be awesome...now they have messed with it so much it is almost unusable. I mean the algorithm for the feed is so awful I literally only see posts from like 5 people no matter how much I try and tweak it. At this point I only use it for a workout community I am in and dont even read much else.

Yeah it’s so fucking annoying. You read a post from someone and all you see if their last two weeks of posts for the next week.

I looked at Reddit once. That was enough.
I do think this board policed itself nicely. There are always "leaks," but overall, went smooth.
I've been around for a while, and obviously active in those years. Met a lot of great people, was even in some weddings due to this site. (wait, wteff happened to the smiley icon?! JeffC!)
Migration as opposed to "new site" is the key. Have to have a base crowd to get the thing going.

No matter what, there will be social/etc politics in whatever site you establish. I see it in the beer groups I'm in on FB (and these are private groups, where most know each other personally). Just have to figure out how to deal/regulate it.

I've ditched FB and I can't stand Reddit. Feel free to add me on Instagram though - name is "pete_plays_bass".

Reddit is nice in specific and well moderated subs, a cancer in everything else.

In some of my other interests it’s really the only place for any news or discussion like r/MLS or r/MagicTCG. r/CollegeHockey is ok but I rarely visit, r/Hockey is decent but r/Soccer is a f-ing mess.

Putting faces to names on here is really, really weird. I can't say I ever thought of what half the people on here might look like.

Well what made this place what it was was a bunch of us hanging out. I mean the Frozen Four get togethers were awesome. (Saint Paul in '02 was fun as hell as was Buffalo '03) I had season tickets with people from this site, knew dozens in real life before and after this site and still am friends with some people because of it. (same with GPL) This was social media for me for a long time.

The hockey side was great until people started taking things too seriously then it got boring. The Cafe started out weird, became a social gathering and now is political. Weird evolution but kind of paralleled where I am in life.

Never put faces on people who only exist to you on message boards or the radio... How many of them look even REMOTELY like what you think?!?

As for migration to another location for our band of merry idiots, I'd be all in and wouldn't oppose a modest financial contribution to it if that was necessary to secure something we could use easily and appreciate.

Other than this and one other team-centric message board I avoid all "social media."

Other than clicking on some of the twitter links I see on this forum I don't do any of it. Never posted a single, d am n thing on facebook and stopped using twitter years ago after a few months of trying it out. Same for all the rest of it. If this place were to go away and have nothing take its place for us, I'd miss greatly the interaction with almost all of you. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.
